Abortion Rights as a
Free-Speech Flashpoint

Wall Street Journal, by Floyd Abrams

Original Article

Posted By:Desert Fox, 1/6/2014 6:42:31 PM

When Chief Justice John Roberts announces, on the morning of Jan. 15, that the Supreme Court will hear oral argument in McCullen v. Coakley , the stage will be set for the court to address one aspect of the searing national debate about abortion. The case isn´t about the scope of legal protection for that procedure, but about what limits may be placed on speech on public streets near medical facilities in which abortions are performed. McCullen v. Coakley presents the court with an opportunity to reconsider what may well be its most indefensible First Amendment ruling so far this

Comments:
This is an Issue that should be off limits, according to the Social Progressive RepublicRats who are represented on this site by Tokyo Rove´s Screeching Harpie Harridan´s, who excoriated and ridiculed anyone who voiced opposition to their Teen Beat Poster Idol, Willard. They screech that the issue of murdering an unborn baby in the mother´s womb and the position of the Social Conservatives is too radical and makes the Republican´s look like extremists. They are willing to ignore Infanticide that is Abortion in order to Go Along to Get Along with their Social Progressive brethren in the DemocRat Party.

RUSH: By the way, one more global warming story. Just one more. It´s about the Russian global warming research vessel that went down to the Antarctic area to find melting ice. I´m not kidding. A bunch of global warming scientists had an expedition to Antarctica (the South Pole, for those of you in Rio Linda) to document melting ice in Antarctica because of global warming. As you know, they got stuck. They got stuck so bad that it took ChiCom and American rescue ships to get them out. You know, this has to be a real dilemma for Obama. The United States

The Moralistic Fallacy

City Journal´s Kay Hymowitz weighed in over the holidays with a response to our Dec. 16 column, in which we faulted the premise of her earlier article titled "Boy Trouble." She maintains that the main body of the article (which we described as "informative and important") is responsive to our criticism: "Men traditionally sought to ´better themselves´ not because working in an office or on an assembly line was itself a source of delight, but because being a workingman enabled them to earn respect and made possible the joys of domestic life," Taranto writes. I´ve made a similar point repeatedly (though

RUSH: So, ladies and gentlemen, we are having a record-breaking cold snap in many parts of the country. And right on schedule the media have to come up with a way to make it sound like it´s completely unprecedented. Because they´ve got to find a way to attach this to the global warming agenda, and they have. It´s called the "polar vortex." The dreaded polar vortex. Do you know what the polar vortex is? Have you ever heard of it? Well, they just created it for this week. Actually, there is a piece. I´ve got a piece in the Stack that

The daughter of a Jewish classmate of Anne Frank rescued from the horrors of Bergen Belsen concentration camp has met the British officer who saved her mother´s life. Grateful Elizabeth Kahn, 59, flew to Israel to meet Major Leonard Berney, 93, from Plymouth, Devon, and present him with a special silver platter paid for by the family in recognition of his heroics. Jewish Leonard, of the British 11th Armoured division, was one of the first army officers through the gates of Belsen when the camp was liberated on April 15, 1945. It is estimated that 50,000 inmates died in the notorious northwest German

Seven dangerous Al-Qaeda suspects are to be freed from Government curfews and able to walk the streets within days, it has emerged. The men, some of whom are suspected of plotting to kill thousands on transatlantic airliners, will no longer be bound by electronic tags or curfew restrictions after the terrorism prevention orders are lifted. The measures were introduced in 2012 to replace Labour government rules which, according to the Liberal Democrats, undermined the suspects´ human rights. However they only last two years unless the government can prove the suspects have engaged in ´new´ terrorist-related activity. Officials say such proof is hard if

HONOLULU - President Barack Obama is going to give his wife the birthday present that many parents can only dream of - time off, alone, without the children. The White House said on Saturday first lady Michelle Obama would stay in Hawaii, where the family has been on vacation for the last two weeks, rather than return home with her husband and their two girls. "As part of her birthday gift from the president, the first lady will remain in Hawaii to spend time with friends ahead of her upcoming 50th birthday," a White House official said. The agency responsible for implementing ObamaCare will release a report on Monday showing slow growth in national healthcare spending. The Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services (CMS) will brief reporters at the National Press Club on what the Obama administration has touted as a trend of slower healthcare spending growth since the implementation of the Affordable Care Act. The CMS data are considered the standard for determining U.S. healthcare spending statistics. Earlier this year, the White House released a report that showed healthcare spending has grown at the slowest rate on record and crediting the Affordable Care Act. The report, produced by the Council

After 14 months, one Pittsburgh businessman still wonders: If everyone like him had voted in 2012, how differently might 2013 have turned out? The lifelong Democrat, who runs a five-man machine shop, regrets not voting for president in 2012. He admits President Barack Obama´s assault on Mitt Romney´s character cast just enough doubt in his mind that he believed the Republican nominee would favor Wall Street over Main Street, put Washington into political deadlock and keep the economy stubbornly at a standstill. He also believed he could keep his health-care plan — the one he liked — under Obama. “For me, the class-warfare slogans

The president will have has hands full: Right off the bat, he´ll be faced with questions about the rollout of ObamaCare and a major address on the NSA in the middle of January. He’ll also be making a big push to extend federal unemployment benefits as the White House seeks to make income inequality a major issue in this year’s midterm elections. After a rocky 2013 that saw his poll numbers sag, Obama will look

Romney dug into the Affordable Care Act’s roll-out, the contraception mandate which he signed into law in Massachusetts, and the Winter Olympics in Russia. Asked what “bothers” him the most about the ACA roll-out, Romney said that the onerous coverage requirements frustrated him the most. “it’s not just that the president tells people that they have to buy health insurance,” Romney said, “it’s that

Obamacare is a flea bitten dog that never would have been enacted without wholesale and deliberate falsehoods said over and over again by Barack Obama and every Democrat cheerleader. It never would have been enacted without legislative sleights-of-hand and backroom bribes offered to key Democrats. It never would have been enacted and Barack Obama would likely not have won a second term without the willing negligence of a toothless “watchdog press” who refused to independently investigate or report obvious lies. Early last summer in her Georgian-style home near Washington’s Embassy Row, Hillary Clinton met with a handful of aides for a detailed presentation on preparing for a 2016 presidential campaign. Three officials from the Democratic consulting firm Dewey Square Group — veteran field organizer Michael Whouley, firm founder Charlie Baker and strategist Jill Alper, whose expertise includes voter attitudes toward women candidates — delivered a dispassionate, numbers-driven assessment. They broke down filing deadlines in certain states, projected how much money Clinton would need to raise and described how field operations have become more sophisticated in the era of Barack Obama.

A Georgia couple was shocked and disgusted to find a racial slur scrawled on a valet ticket after a night out at a local restaurant. After Candea and Sam Aarons had dinner at the Spondivits restaurant in East Point, Ga., on New Year’s Day, they found that the valet tag still affixed to their key chain had the phrase “jungle fever” written on one side. The phrase is a racial slur for an interracial couple. Candea Aaron said she initially didn’t notice anything unusual in their interaction with the valet, but in previous visits the tag was always removed from their key before they received it back. “I’ve never had their [valet] tag left

New York - Liz Cheney, whose upstart bid to unseat Wyoming Sen. First Lady Michelle Obama failed to accompany President Obama and their daughters home from Hawaii today, a decision that will likely incur taxpayers at least a couple of hundred thousand dollars in costs. The White House described the move as a “birthday gift” from President Obama to his wife, allowing her to “spend times with friends ahead of her upcoming 50th birthday,” which occurs January 17. But for this gift, you are footing much of the bill. I estimated some costs a year ago when, on their previous vacation to Hawaii, it appeared that Michelle was going to stay in Hawaii

President Obama is pushing back against attempts to rein in the National Security Agency’s electronic intelligence collections, and well he should as commander-in-chief. After one federal judge ruled that the NSA’s collection of so-called telephone metadata was likely unconstitutional even under a special intelligence court’s authority, the administration sought permission from the special court for new action and petitioned to appeal the judge’s hyperventilations. Far more grounded was another court ruling, this one upholding metadata collection. (Snip)Snowden knowingly and brazenly stole vast troves of information that were kept secret for a reason.
