How Harry Reid may help
the GOP win back the Senate

Washington Post, by Marc A. Thiessen

Original Article

Harry Reid’s decision to pull the trigger on the “nuclear option” in the fall may end up producing some unexpected fallout for Democrats next fall: the loss of their Senate majority. Reid sowed the seeds of his own destruction by changing the calculus in the 2014 midterm elections. Before Reid went nuclear, tea party challengers and their supporters (this columnist included) could correctly argue that winning the majority really did not matter. Since the GOP needed 60 votes to overcome a Democratic filibuster — something that was clearly out of reach — why not gamble and challenge the establishment? The GOP

Comments:
Between 0bama, 0bamacare and Reid I would love to believe that. However, I never underestimate the establishment Republicans´ ability to divide the party and shatter those hopes.

Dream on.
Karl Rove and the RINOs are working as hard as they can to elect more Dims.
That is who they are. That is what they do.
Rove et al want to be a permanent minority party, like the Whigs in 1860. They may well succeed.

President Barack Obama called himself the “champion-in-chief” of comprehensive immigration reform Thursday but said once again that there’s nothing he can do stem the flow of deportations. Speaking at a health care town hall program sponsored by Telemundo, Univision and La Opinion-impreMedia, Obama passed the buck on deportations to Congress, which he said is responsible for funding government positions responsible for deportations. “I am the champion-in-chief of comprehensive immigration reform,” Obama said. “What I’ve said in the past remains true: Until Congress passes a new law I am constrained in what I can do.” Obama said the a 2012 order

Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal (R) told the Conservative Political Action Conference that President Obama is the worst president of his lifetime — even worse than Jimmy Carter. Jindal, a potential presidential candidate, jokingly apologized to Carter and to the conservative crowd for saying throughout the 2012 campaign that Obama was the worst since Carter. "To President Carter, I want to issue a sincere apology. It is no longer fair to say he was the worst president of this country in my lifetime. President Obama has proven me wrong," he said. Jindal, to tepid applause, slammed Obama for standing "against giving parents choices" on

A plea for about a dozen people who know who they are: Will you see “12 Years a Slave” now? It just won the Oscar for Best Picture. It just came out on DVD. Please see it. I’ll even spring for the popcorn. You see, I keep encountering folks, mostly African-American, who have decided that they won’t -- or can’t -- see this movie. Some say they don’t want to be made angry. Others say they don’t want to be traumatized. I don’t blame them for respecting the power of this film. “12 Years,” based on the 1853 memoir of a free man kidnapped

Making a direct sales pitch to Hispanic voters on Thursday, President Obama insisted that his administration would not delay the March 31 deadline for consumers to obtain health insurance or pay a fine. When asked whether the latest delay was an admission of a problem with the health law, Obama replied, “No, no, no.” Obama turned his attention Thursday to the Latino community, a demographic critical for the success of the Affordable Care Act. The White House desperately needs Hispanics to sign up for Obamacare, as Latinos account for roughly 25 percent of the uninsured pool. “Nobody actually wants to spend money

Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) received a lukewarm reception from conservatives gathered for the annual Conservative Political Action Conference on Thursday, despite delivering a speech full of conservative red meat. The Senate minority leader´s address came as he faces a fierce primary challenge from his right flank and frustration from conservatives with his role in a number of contentious policy debates this year, most recently his vote to raise the debt limit. He arrived on stage accompanied by retiring Sen. Tom Coburn (R-Okla.), whom he thanked for his service to the movement with the gift of a rifle — and framed the rest

In a strongly worded letter to House Speaker John A. Boehner (R-Ohio), the Congressional Black Caucus called for Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) to be stripped of his House committee chairmanship after he abruptly ended a hearing Wednesday morning over the objection of Democrats in the room. "Mr. Issa is a disgrace and should not be allowed to continue in a leadership role," wrote Rep. Marcia Fudge (D-Ohio), who leads the Congressional Black Caucus, in the letter to Boehner. Former Ambassador to the United Nations John Bolton on Thursday said President Obama is the United States’ “biggest national security crisis.” He made the comment in remarks to the Conservative Political Action Conference in Washington. “This is a president who does not believe in American exceptionalism, a president who is uninterested in U.S. national security and America’s place in the world, who considers our strength part of the problem, that we are the cause of international tension. NATIONAL HARBOR, MD -- Conservative columnist and Fox News contributor George Will touted the benefits of divided government in his remarks to the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) on Thursday. "There is a case to be made," he said, from a conservative point of view, that if Republicans win the White House in 2016, Democrats should control "at least one house of Congress." The remark sent murmurs through the audience, and a few booed. Will had argued that divided government was proof of the wisdom of the American electorate, adding that Washington would be in far worse shape if Republicans did not control

A new poll gauging the nation´s voters interest in America´s political dynasties -- the Clintons and the Bushes -- finds a remarkable lack of interest in former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush´s possible run for president, in part because two Bushes have already served in the White House. Rasmussen Reports found that in a head-to-head matchup, Hillary Clinton would crush Jeb Bush, 47 percent to 33 percent. One big reason is that voters are looking for an alternative to the Bush family. Rasmussen reported that 50 percent said they are less likely to vote for Bush because his brother, George W.,

We are embroiled in a global conflict, and the supposed “leader of the free world” is taking photo ops at a grade school, making statements about the invasion of Ukraine on a kids’ rug. Meanwhile, Putin incredibly denied that any Russian troops are in Ukraine, and somehow President Barack ‘I-call-the-Russian-invasion-an-uncontested-arrival’ Obama actually thought it was a good idea to set up a lectern on a grade school alphabet mat when the entire world is seeing the consequences of his weakness. At Chipotle, guacamole costs extra - but it soon may not be available at all thanks to climate change. The Denver, Colorado-based chain of Mexican fast-food restaurants threatened to take the condiment off the menu because of the rising price of avocados. While the avocado crop is currently fine, scientists at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory are predicting drier temperatures will lead to a 40 per cent drop in California´s avocado crop over the next 32 years. Most modern scientists agree that there is a direct correlation between the increase of droughts and global warming, according to Think Progress.

Where Lois Lerner goes, drama follows. On Wednesday, the former IRS officer again invoked the Fifth before the House Oversight Committee. That precipitated a heated exchange between the committee’s Republican chairman, Darrell Issa, and Democratic ranking member Elijah Cummings, who called the hearings “un-American.” And that spat has become the story. No doubt that is exactly what Cummings had in mind. Because it distracts attention from the substance of the hearings — and from the questions raised by e-mails and public remarks Lois Lerner wrote, received or made when she was IRS Director of Tax Exempt Organizations. WASHINGTON — Charles G. and David H. Koch, the billionaire brothers who are perhaps the best-known patrons of conservative Republican politics, are bespectacled and in their 70s. They look genial enough. But Democrats are embarking on a broad effort that aims to unmask the press-shy siblings and portray them, instead, as a pair of villains bent on wrecking progressive politics. On Thursday, the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee is starting a digital campaign that will use Internet ads and videos, as well as social media, to tie Republican Senate candidates to the policies and actions of the Koch brothers. As a U.S. senator, Barack Obama won $48 million in federal funding to help Ukraine destroy thousands of tons of guns and ammunition--weapons which are now unavailable to the Ukrainian army as it faces down Russian President Vladimir Putin during his invasion of Crimea. In August 2005, just seven months after his swearing-in, Obama traveled to Donetsk in Eastern Ukraine with then-Indiana Republican Senator Dick Lugar, touring a conventional weapons site. The two met in Kiev with President Victor Yushchenko, making the case that an existing Cooperative Threat Reduction Program covering the destruction of nuclear weapons should be expanded to
