De Blasio´s horse-drawn carriage ban:
Is it really about campaign cash?

American Spectator, by Robert Stacy McCain

Original Article

Posted By:Judy W., 1/6/2014 1:22:32 PM

Mayor Bill de Blasio´s promise to ban New York City´s iconic horse-drawn carriages could backfire, exposing what the newly-elected mayor´s critics suggest is a corruption scandal masquerading as an animal-rights crusade. Defenders of the carriage industry point to a real-estate executive who is one of de Blasio´s major campaign donors as the driving force behind the effort to abolish the carriages. "It´s got everything a scandal could ever want," says Eva Hughes, vice-president of the Horse and Carriage Association of New York City. Hughes spent 16 years driving carriages, her husband still drives a carriage, and she says they are

A liberal democrat motivated by bribes rather than ideology. I´m shocked, astounded and astonished. Mayor de Blank appears not to understand that if the horses lose their gig their future is stamps and dog food.

If the mayor is sincere about his initiative to put the working horses of NYC out of work, then he should immediately put to pasture all the city owned horses that NYPD officers ride on the same streets where the carriage horses work.

Thank you, #10. Especially since police horses work in situations which can be a lot more dangerous than pulling a buggy on a city street. Example number one - crowd control at leftist demonstrations which frequently turn violent. Leftist protesters have been known to assault police horses with bottles, rocks and even their own fists.

When the logic doesn’t sound right, it’s not. And in politics, to get the real reason for what they are pushing, just follow the money. Green initiatives? Bankrupted green companies owned by friends of Barack and funded with tax money. Global warming? A carbon trading scheme partly owned by Algore that would have made him a billionaire. Environmental problems with the Keytston pipeline? Just ship it by rail. Oh, and during the crash what did Buffett buy? Railroads.

Journalism Schools should not take four years. They should take 60 seconds.

Oh come on. It´s not his kids and it´s not corruption, or at least they don´t matter. I am a New Yorker born and bred and as conservative as they come, and my brand of conservatism does not include cruelty to animals. Carriage rides are only "romantic" in the eyes of PR campaigns and silly engaged couples. The reality is that for decades the horses have been worked in bitter cold and wiltingly hot weather. NYC measures the temp. high up in Central Park, not on the tarmac where horses work long hours in noisy crowded traffic. They live in derelict stables and get no veterinary care because it´s cheaper to replace a horse than keep it healthy. It´s not a huge number of horses, and groups have promised to find homes for all. It´s ways past time to end this abuse.

But in one of the most spectacularly stupid decisions in years, the city is going to drain the reservoir. (Snip) But is it possible to calculate precisely how illogical Portland’s decision is? Let’s try to put some numbers on it. Several smart people on Twitter quickly did the math and figured that a typical urination of about 1/8 gallon in a reservoir of 38 million gallons amounts to a concentration of 3 parts per billion.

In case you’ve ever wondered, when you take a psychiatrist to dinner (especially a forensic psychiatrist, like me), he doesn’t leave the office 100 percent. No well-trained psychiatrist can. When I had dinner with Lou and Linda Pelletier and three of their four daughters, Jennifer, Jessica and Julia, a few nights ago in Massachusetts, I wasn’t trying to evaluate them. It used to be that if you went to a college-level debate tournament, the students you’d see would be bookish future lawyers from elite universities, most of them white. In matching navy blazers, they’d recite academic arguments for and against various government policies. It was tame, predictable, and, frankly, boring. No more. These days, an increasingly diverse group of participants has transformed debate competitions, mounting challenges to traditional form and content by incorporating personal experience, performance, and radical politics. These “alternative-style” debaters have achieved success, too, taking top honors at national collegiate tournaments over the past few years. But this transformation has also

The debate over campaign contributions is never-ending for a simple reason: Both sides of the argument have merit. On the one hand, of course money is speech. For most citizens, contributing to politicians or causes is the most effective way to augment and amplify speech with which they agree. The most disdainful dismissers of this argument are editorialists and incumbent politicians who — surprise! — already enjoy access to vast audiences and don’t particularly like their monopoly being invaded by the unwashed masses or the self-made plutocrat. On the other hand, of course money is corrupting.

Last Friday, in a speech at Al Sharpton’s National Action Network conference, President Obama proudly announced that the Justice Department had taken on more than 100 voting rights cases since 2009. WASHINGTON — Former President Jimmy Carter joined fellow Nobel laureates Wednesday in opposing Keystone XL, insisting that approving the pipeline would trigger “more climate upheaval” around the globe. In an open letter to President Barack Obama and Secretary of State John Kerry, Carter and the nine other Nobel Peace Prize winners bluntly warned the leaders: “Your decision on the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline will define your climate legacy.” The missive, published as an advertisement in Politico, represents the first time Carter has taken a position on the $5.4 billion project and makes him the first former president to come

To "honor the dignity and work of immigrants," Democratic House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi helps Bishop Marc Andrus wash the feet of two children Thursday at Saint John the Evangelist Episcopal Church in San Francisco. Pelosi also used the occasion to talk about passing HR15 - bipartisan immigration legislation that her office says would "reduce the deficit by nearly $1 trillion, secure our borders, unite our families, protect our workers and provide an earned pathway to citizenship." The Democratic leader´s ceremony coincides with Pope Francis´ similar ceremony in Rome to mark Holy Week.

First, the good news: We are close enough to the end of the Obama presidency for his crowd to talk about a presidential library. Now, the bad news: Obama´s retirement is still 1,008 days distant. Plenty of time though to round up the dough to build it somewhere. Figure they need Solyndra-style money, at least $500 million. The last two presidents – Bill Clinton and George W. Bush -- built their legacy edifices totally with private money. [Snip] However, Obama supporters have a different take. They think taxpayers should put up $100 million in public money for Obama´s library.

Less than 16 hours after Chelsea Clinton announced she was pregnant, a lot of major news outlets started staring into the crystal ball of Chelsea’s womb, wondering what this currently floating zygotic multicellular being meant for the prospects of Hillary Clinton’s 2016 campaign, which is also a floating, zygotic, multicellular being. Their answer: The immaculately conceived Clinton child could mean everything. And no, it’s not just the fact that having a grandchild could be personally fulfilling to Hillary and Bill (mazel tov, by the way), or that a cute baby would be a sweet cherry on top of Hillary’s already

Imagine a vendor on the National Mall, selling burgers and dogs, who hasn’t paid his rent in 20 years. He refuses to recognize his landlord, the National Park Service, as a legitimate authority. Every court has ruled against him, and fines have piled up. What’s more, the effluents from his food cart are having a detrimental effect on the spring grass in the capital. Would an armed posse come to his defense, aiming their guns at the park police? Would the lawbreaker get prime airtime on Fox News, breathless updates in the Drudge Report, a sympathetic ear from Tea Party Republicans?
