Off the Grid: A Good
Time for Bad News

National Journal, by Ron Fournier

Back on the grid and catching up on holiday-season news: "Edward Snowden, Whistle-Blower" – In a Jan. 1 editorial, The New York Times urged the government to offer Snowden "a plea bargain or some form of clemency" for exposing the National Security Agency´s surveillance operations. My view has been consistent since the scandal´s outbreak: Snowden is neither a hero nor a traitor ("Why I Don´t Care About Edward Snowden"). He is a duplicitous megalomaniac who exposed legitimate intelligence operations. Like Fred Kaplan of Slate, I believe the editorial glosses over Snowden´s less-than-honorable actions (read Kaplan´s even-handed analysis here). At the same time,

yes, he did expose legitimate intel activities.
Problem is, he also exposed some that aren´t legitimate. Look, this is a shadowy area, and while we can and do expect moral conduct from commissioned officers in the military, the standards are somewhat different in the No Such Agency or at the Company. Just from the nature of the work and the talents and attitudes that are needed to do that work.
I don´t want the Stasi monitoring my calls. By the same token, given the realities of Islamo-fascist activities at the mosque in YOUR town, or the jihadist training centers in upstate New York, central Pennsylvania, western Alabama, and so forth, what ARE the boundaries?
Oversight is required, but given the craven nature that has become evident on the part of the oversight bodies, and the despicable character of the recent political appointees, what is the appropriate attitude?
Snowden isn´t a hero. Neither is Clapper. Neither was Panetta. As for these FISA "judges", they should be out of office today. Trust has ben lost, and that may be the worst part of this whole mess. Government has become a "they", and that is not A Good Thing.

The Feds have brought the "They" on their own heads. We have 547 elected officials, 7 SCOTUS and numerous contractors and lobbyist in DC today.

These elites have no responsibility to the people, its all about the power, money and control.

Until the Feds can clean up this mess they created, the "They" tag will remain on their heads.

The American People should hold all elected, SCOUTS, and special interest group under the most powerful microscope of distrust.

It is "They" who must earn the trust of the American people. Part of the earned trust is to remove from our voting precincts the computer digital ballots. We need to go back to paper ballots immediately.

We can be quite certain that 2012 election would have been a different outcome had we used paper ballots.

It’s mourning in America again, this time in Columbia, Maryland…located about halfway between Baltimore and Washington, DC in suburban Maryland. All told, three are confirmed dead, including the shooter. Four are reported injured. We still don’t know if the two victims were targeted or randomly taken. Call me a cockeyed optimist but many of the recent reports about our energy resources and discoveries in medical advances conjure up visions of an America enjoying low gas and energy prices; low unemployment, high wages and low cost medical treatments. None of these changes will be possible, however, unless we have a government willing to allow them. American citizens (legitimate citizens, not just residents) can vote to elect a government that is not beholden to special interest donors and lobbyists. While this sounds unlikely at the moment, it is not impossible especially if the comatose voters who got us

The release of Justin Bieber’s mugshot once again reminds us just how fascinating these little pieces of celebrity photography can be. Does the person under arrest have the presence of mind to flash their signature smile, as Bieber evidently did, or are they so far off the deep end that they lose all sense of vanity and simply succumb to their new reality? To examine this phenomenon, below is a look back at some of the most remarkable mugshots from prominent media figures over the last several decades, for too many of whom were arrested in Florida.

Cuomo´s Place

At the 1992 Democratic National Convention, the pro-life Democratic governor of Pennsylvania, Robert Casey, was barred from speaking. The message was if you are pro-life, you have no place in the Democratic party. The new attitude of the Democratic party, at least as represented by New York’s Governor Andrew Cuomo, is if you are pro-life, you have no place in a blue state. During a January 17 interview with Susan Arbetter of WCNY’s “The Capitol Pressroom,” Cuomo, angry at Republican opposition to his agenda, offered his critique of the GOP. “Who are they?” Cuomo demanded to know. No doubt Mayor de Blasio was relieved to beat it out of town Thursday and leave behind inconvenient questions about the botch of this week’s snowstorm. Plainly he is more comfortable on a stage in Washington, where he declared to his fellow mayors that it’s their job “to address the root causes of inequality.” Now, this week’s snowstorm was not on the scale of the one that so damaged Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s reputation in 2010, much less the one that forever tarnished John Lindsay many decades earlier. But it carries a warning especially apt for a man who views himself as

Has the left’s attempt to use the lethal-injection process to ban the death penalty backfired? Consideration of firing squads for implementing the death penalty is not a fringe issue and would bring back the humaneness the left claims it wants in the process. As often as I can, I laud the importance, value and decency of the death penalty. As a feminist, I’ve spent a great deal of my adult life as an advocate for women, educating on violence against women and agitating for justice for women in a system that far too often forgets the victims on the receiving end

New York Mayor Bill de Blasio emphatically backed New Governor Andrew Cuomo’s controversial remarks that “extreme” conservatives – which he defined as being pro-life, second amendment advocates, or supporters of traditional marriage – “have no place in the state of New York.” “I stand by that 100 percent,” de Blasio told reporters at the U.S. Conference of Mayors in Washington, D.C. on Thursday. “I agree with Governor Cuomo’s remarks. I interpret his remarks to say that an extremist attitude that continues the reality of violence in our communities or an extremist attitude that denies the rights of women does not

The statements by the witnesses, two of whom are aides to the mayor, Dawn Zimmer, support the account she gave to federal prosecutors on Sunday, and the interviews suggest that prosecutors and the Federal Bureau of Investigation have moved swiftly to investigate her accusations. The IRS is good at a lot of things — sending out tax refunds, giving tax credits for child-care expenses and deductions for charitable contributions, and helping taxpayers file their income tax returns for free. But one thing the IRS probably isn’t very good at is deciding whether or not a woman has been raped. That’s why some provisions of the “No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act” don’t make a whole lot of sense. H.R. 7, which is sponsored by Rep. Christopher Smith (R-N.J.), would change the tax code so that individuals may only deduct medical expenses related to abortion in cases

AUSTIN, Texas -- Texas started a trend by making most of its high school students tackle algebra II. But eight years later, the state often watched for education policy is abandoning the requirement. The move is being praised by school districts for affording them more flexibility. But some policy experts are nervous because nearly 20 states have since followed Texas´ lead in requiring the advanced math course.
