Documents detail fire,
maintenance issues with
Charlotte airport buses

Charlotte Observer, by Rick Rothacker

Original Article

It seemed like a can’t-miss deal: Charlotte’s airport in 2007 started buying hybrid buses from a local company that promised better gas mileage, cleaner emissions and a quieter ride. (Snip) U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx, the former Charlotte mayor and DesignLine lawyer, is referenced three times in the airport documents reviewed by the Observer: • When Foxx decided to join DesignLine shortly after being elected mayor in 2009, he asked the city attorney for a “conflict of interest advisory opinion.”

Comments:
No conflict of interest here. Nothing to see. Move right along.

Actually shocked the McClatchy owned CO actually printed this,

Cannon resigned Wednesday evening. He was arrested that morning at a SouthPark apartment used by undercover FBI agents after the mayor turned up expecting another payment, sources say.

Despite an increase of at least $400,000 in incentive payments to keep the CIAA basketball tournament, the Charlotte Regional Visitors Authority said it’s confident it will still have enough money to attract other conventions and events. The CIAA and the CRVA announced Monday that Charlotte would be home to its annual basketball tournament through 2020 and that the CIAA would move its headquarters from Hampton, Va., to the Queen City. The CRVA’s current deal with the CIAA calls for Charlotte to provide the CIAA with $1 million annually along with use of the Convention Center rent-free.

(snip) General admission started at $100, but partygoers could shell out more money for bigger perks, according to a webpage describing the event. Paying the top price of $10,000 would get attendees a sofa on the stage near celebrities and 15 bottles of alcohol in the hotel’s first-floor Symphony Ballroom.

About 100,000 homes and businesses in West Virginia were being told on Thursday not to use tap water for drinking, cooking or bathing following a chemical spill along the Elk River in Charleston, the state´s capital, according to local officials. Governor Earl Ray Tomblin declared a state of emergency for five counties as a result of the spill of 4-Methylcyclohexane Methanol, a chemical used in the coal industry. North Carolina’s unemployment rate has fallen more than other states’ this year, and changes in the state’s unemployment system may be a contributor, Wells Fargo Securities economist Mark Vitner wrote in a report Tuesday. The state’s unemployment rate started the year as one of the highest in the country but has fallen two percentage points from a year ago to 7.4 percent in November, according to state commerce department data. The state’s unemployment rate is now .4 percentage points higher than the U.S. average, compared with 1.6 percentage points higher in November 2012. In July, North Carolina decided to end federal

ATLANTA, Georgia -- What seemed like a pipe dream in mid-November is now a reality. Only a year after total collapse, Auburn is heading to Pasadena to take on Florida State in the BCS national championship game. Three hours after No. 3 Auburn finished beating No. 5 Missouri in the SEC Championship and started stumping to be chosen over an undefeated Ohio State team, Michigan State erased any debate by beating the Buckeyes 34-24 in the Big Ten championship game in Indianapolis.

RALEIGH — Most of North Carolina’s congressional staffers — the men and women who work for the state’s two U.S. senators and 13 members of the U.S. House of Representatives — will be entering the District of Columbia’s health care exchange once the Affordable Care Act takes effect in January. One notable exception: the office of 1st District Rep. G.K. An Alabama fan was shot dead after a fight outside a football-watching party shortly after the Crimson Tide lost in a stunning upset to the Auburn Tigers Saturday. Michelle Shepherd was attacked by fellow fans of the University of Alabama after she commented that she didn´t care that much that the team had lost, her sister says. Saturday's 34-28 loss to in-state rivals the Auburn Tigers in a remarkable last-second touchdown means Alabama lost its No. 1 ranking and, likely, its chance to play for a third-consecutive national championship. Students took the tests last school year, as North Carolina moved toward tougher national academic standards designed to give a more honest measure of skills.

Before getting to the speech itself, it’s worth noting a few things. When the Democrats passed and Barack Obama signed Obamacare, the majority opposed it. About 56%, in fact. A majority have consistently opposed that law ever since. The Obama administration touted 7 million sign-ups by March 31 as “success.” When that goal appeared to be unreachable, the administration suggested that maybe 5 or 6 million would be enough. Now, as if by magic, they have their number. Somehow. All along, the administration has touted false numbers of enrollees. All along, the administration has neglected to admit that Obamacare is

A few months back, HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius stated for the record that 7 million Obamacare sign-ups by the end of March would constitute success. She was clear about it. But then February came, and February always stinks. It’s just a lousy month. You’re tired of winter, you’re still miles away from spring, and no one was signing up for Obamacare. That 7 million figure looked totally unreachable. So Sebelius does what every other member of the Obama administration does when confronted with inconvenient facts. She lied. ANN ARBOR, Mich. – President Obama compared the Republican budget plan to a "stinkburger" or "meanwich" during a speech here Wednesday, using a series of zingers in an attempt to strike a contrast with the GOP on economic issues in an election year. In a speech to an enthusiastic crowd of 1,400 at the University of Michigan, Obama repeatedly mocked Republican ideas about how to improve the economy, as he touted his own proposal to raise the minimum wage. Obama, who visited the local Zingerman´s deli before the speech, said that Republican proposals to cut taxes for wealthier Americans and

A triumphant President Barack Obama declared his signature medical insurance overhaul a success, saying it has made America´s health care system ´a lot better.´ But buried in the 7.1 million enrollments he announced in a heavily staged Rose Garden appearance is a more unsettling reality. Numbers from a RAND Corporation study that has been kept under wraps suggest that barely 858,000 previously uninsured Americans – nowhere near 7.1 million – have paid for new policies and joined the ranks of the insured by Monday night. Others were already insured, including millions who lost coverage when their existing policies were suddenly

Big changes could be just down the road for North Carolina drivers. A proposal is in the works that would change the state tax system to charge drivers by the mile, instead of at the gas pump. The proposal would be to charge a half cent per mile for cars, which would generate almost $500 million in annual state revenue. A driver who travelled 15,000 miles in a year would pay about $75. "Basically you pay per the mile. It´s treating transportation as a utility, much like your water and sewer," said Larry Goode, with the Institute of Transportation Research and

With Chris Christie in deep trouble, Republican poobahs are reportedly looking to Jeb Bush to save their party in 2016. The former two-term governor of Florida speaks fluent Spanish, is a convert to Catholicism, and has high name recognition. Jeb could raise millions of dollars over night by just saying “yes” to running. Despite all this, there are strong reasons Republicans should say no to him. 1. His last name is poison. Let’s face it, if Jeb Bush had the last name of Something Else he would have already run for president in 2008 or 2012. According to a recent Washington Post/ABC News poll registered voters were asked if they would definitely NOT vote for Jeb Bush and 50 percent said they would not.
