FSU´s O´Leary making name for himself
Tampa Tribune, by Joey Johnston

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. — After football season, Florida State University junior tight end Nick O’Leary plays three rounds of golf every week. He’s about a 3-handicap. But one of his most prideful moments was three years ago, when he finally out-drove his grandfather. “That was great,” O’Leary said, smiling. His grandfather is Jack Nicklaus, the venerable Golden Bear himself, arguably the best golfer who ever lived. And if you must know, Nick O’Leary’s full name isn’t Nicholas. It’s Nicklaus. But the stories kind of stop there. O’Leary isn’t a name-dropper, particularly when it comes to his famous grandfather. “(My teammates)

Comments:
Nick´s maternal grandparents (Jack and Barbara) have been seen at a lot of FSU games this past year. Monday night Nick and his FSU teammates go for the national championship. I hope it´s an exciting game. Right now I´m off to see my alma mater, Vanderbilt, in its post-season bowl.

There is a dash cam video of Nick´s motorcycle accident. The fact that he is a alive is a miracle. He should swear off the stupid donorcycles now. (what my undertaker friend calls them) GO NOLES!!!

It must be one of the most exclusive clubs on earth. Wikipedia lists five people who have fallen from airplanes without parachutes and survived. Each is a proof that unlikely events happen. (Snip) We think we lead ordinary lives, but as someone observed humanity’s existence itself is so improbable as to be ludicrous, a circumstance summarized as the anthropic principle. Perhaps the world is not only stranger than we think, but stranger than we can know. Sparrows to fall to earth all the time; what we regard as ridiculous is that anyone should notice, that any one in particular should

Mireille Miller-Young is an Associate Professor at the University of California, Santa Barbara. She teaches in the Department of Feminist Studies (“an interdisciplinary discipline that produces cutting-edge research,” offers an undergraduate major and minor, and houses “the minor in Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer studies”). According to her university web page, Dr. Miller-Young’s “areas of emphasis” are “black cultural studies, pornography and sex work.” She appears to teach four courses: “Women of Color,” “Sexual Cultures Special Topics,” “Feminist Research and Practice,” and “Sexualities.” She holds a Ph.D. in “American History and History of the African Diaspora” from New York

There’s an old joke told among petty criminals in Manila, where suspects are routinely intimidated by the cops till they confess. (Snip) The pro-life demonstrators holding up their poster can be forgiven for thinking they were still in America. After all they had crossed no marked boundaries. So they thought it was alright to peaceably assemble. But in reality they had wandered into the precincts of some strange tribe where such things are not tolerated; a kind of Twilight Zone; a place governed by mysterious customs, prey to obscure taboos and worshipping some monstrous, unnamed idol. Everything was different there.

Carlota Gall of the New York Times describes what — if true — must be the biggest cover up in of all of the Obama administration’s checkered history. Her article is titled “What Pakistan Knew About Bin Laden”. But it is really about what the Obama administration knew that Pakistan knew about Bin Laden. The answer, as far as she can tell is that Washington knows for a fact that Osama bin Laden was Pakistan’s creature. They know it was Pakistan — or factions within it — that ran the whole war on terror. But, she writes, the Obama administration

Talk about a fateful trade. In 1954, Jackson Pollock gave two of his paintings to New York art dealer Martha Jackson in exchange for her sporty green convertible. Two years later, on a hot August evening after a day of drinking gin, Pollock crashed that same Oldsmobile 88 less than a mile from his home on New York´s Long Island, killing himself and a friend of his mistress. He was 44 years old. The mistress, Ruth Kligman, was also in the car but survived. Years later she wrote in a memoir that Pollock had been "speeding wildly" and missed a

Is Barack Obama simply too busy to be Chief Executive of the United States? Apparently. One of the primary functions of the president is to keep the nation safe, to preserve it from its enemies. To do that effectively, one would actually have to maintain something of a consistent level of attention to the moving pieces that directly influence how future events will unfold. None other than the truly sycophantic thinks for a second that President Obama cares a whit for anything that does not involve fundamentally altering the social composition of this country. Or golf. Back when Reagan ran things, we didn’t blather about sanctions against Russia. We used clandestine methods to sabotage its natural gas exports and other key functions. The largest non-nuclear man-made explosion in history, the 1982 Russian natural gas pipeline disaster, was one of the results. A mastermind of this well-documented operation (and some other yet-to-be-documented operations) was the director of planning at the National Security Council under Richard Allen and William Clark, Dr. Norman A. Bailey, who held the title of special assistant to the president. Bailey employed a small team of contractors to obtain intelligence on areas of interest,

Michael Crowley at Time asks a rhetorical question: “Could the crisis in Crimea spoil Barack Obama’s nuclear diplomacy with Iran?” He answers it himself: “No.” (Snip) Can anyone say why, having done all that, they should even mind linking Iran to the current crisis in Ukraine? Yet in the midst of this, the administration has the effrontery to claim that they can discount “concerns that Russia might undermine the Iran nuclear talks.” It’s like they are living on another planet. Putin is acting in a very unstable way. Perhaps even in an insane way. Even the Europeans are running scared.

President Barack Obama said Wednesday that he thinks Massachusetts Gov. The two men have campaigned for each other, with Patrick acting as a surrogate for Obama nationally during the 2012 presidential race. Patrick has said clearly that he intends to return to the private sector when his second term as governor is up at the end of the year and will not run for president in 2016. Tom Wilson and Ben Cohen have already written on these pages about how European liberals, supposedly in the name of animal rights, are banning kosher (and halal) slaughter. In such cases, concern for animal rights seems to be a rather thin veneer for other political objectives that have far more to do with intolerant ideologies than they do with protecting animals. In the United States, animal-rights activism has found other pet causes but, at its core, activists seem less interested in protecting animals than in broader political agendas. Seizing on the sorrowful wake of the horror in Newtown, Conn., in December 2012, gun-control advocates redoubled their efforts, hoping – among other things – to turn gun-free school zones into really, really gun-free school zones. Plans were drafted to harden school entrances and hire additional armed law enforcement to patrol each campus, neither of which is a lousy idea. But Alan Hays, a state senator from the very heart of Florida, says it isn’t enough. On the theory that fences can be defeated and lone rangers can be distracted or leave campus for lunch, the Umatilla Republican wants school

After a disastrous presidential campaign in 2012, can Texas Governor Rick Perry mount a credible bid for the White House in 2016? Texas Governor Rick Perry is currently on a media tour touting the theme that America is a great place for second chances, specifically second chances for Texas governors with national ambitions. Perry is trying to erase the memory of his disastrous 2012 GOP presidential campaign which included “brain-farts” and “oops” debate moments with his folksy, charming, and uniquely American manner. Curious about Perry’s comeback strategy, I asked Texan and GOP presidential media guru, Mark McKinnon and he said,

As part of its plan to reduce U.S. greenhouse gas emissions, the Obama administration is targeting the dairy industry to reduce methane emissions in their operations. This comes despite falling methane emission levels across the economy since 1990. The White House has proposed cutting methane emissions from the dairy industry by 25 percent by 2020. Although U.S. agriculture only accounts for about 9 percent of the country’s greenhouse gas emissions, according to the Environmental Protection Agency, it makes up a sizeable portion of methane emissions — which is a very potent greenhouse gas. Some of these methane emissions come from

A startling rift appeared Tuesday on the Supreme Court as the three female Justices came out swinging like Brunnhildes — women warriors — for what they erroneously labeled an “entitlement” to employer-provided contraceptives and morning-after pills. The Justices were hearing oral arguments in Sebelius v. Hobby Lobby Stores, Inc., a case hyped by the Democratic Party as a test for women’s rights. Justices Kagan, Ginsberg, and Sotomayor sprang on Hobby Lobby’s attorney , interrupting his every sentence and pummeling him with questions taken right out of the Democratic Party’s “war on women” playbook. Las Vegas - Many of the Republican Party’s most powerful insiders and financiers have begun a behind-the-scenes campaign to draft former Florida governor Jeb Bush into the 2016 presidential race, courting him and his intimates and starting talks on fundraising strategy. Concerned that the George Washington Bridge traffic scandal has damaged New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie’s political standing and alarmed by the steady rise of Sen. Rand Paul (Ky.), prominent donors, conservative leaders and longtime operatives say they consider Bush the GOP’s brightest hope to win back the White House.

With high school seniors and their families now deciding where to enroll for college next fall, they might want to take a gander at research showing the best -- and worst -- values for a degree. The shocker in a survey by PayScale, a research firm that focuses on compensation, is that there are schools where students would have been better off not attending. Why? The 20-year net return on their college investment amounts to a financial loss, even when financial aid is included. Taking the time to get and spend money on a degree, in short, means you might actually find yourself in a financial hole. The survey may add to parents' doubts about
