America needs a king

Does America need a monarch? Ever since, according to legend, George Washington turned down the chance of becoming the new country´s king, America´s identity as a republican nation of citizen rulers has been rock solid. Indeed, nothing can stir patriotic anger more than the suggestion that the U.S. president is acting like unelected royalty. Yet even before independence, John Adams argued in favor of a "republican monarchy" of laws, lamenting, "We have so many Men of Wealth, of ambitious Spirits, of Intrigue ... that incessant Factions will disturb our Peace." On the surface, the tale of Sergio Garcia’s legal triumph is heart-warming. The native of Mexico worked hard in several jobs and went to college, eventually graduating from Cal Northern School of Law and passed the state’s unusually challenging bar exam on his first try. He should be celebrated as an example of how the American dream still works for immigrants who are willing to follow the same path emigrants from other countries pursued in the past. But because Garcia entered this country illegally, his successful attempt to practice as an attorney illustrates both the dysfunction of the current system

Snowden Lied About China Contacts

Yesterday, the New York Times urged the Obama administration to offer Edward Snowden “a plea bargain or some form of clemency.” The paper called the former NSA contractor “a whistle-blower” for his exposure of “the vast scope” of the NSA’s “reach into the lives of hundreds of millions of people in the United States and around the globe.” Perhaps Snowden is what the Times portrays him to be, a hero of sorts, yet the editors of the paper rushed to judgment. In their editorial they did not even raise the possibility that he passed along vital national security secrets to China.

A White House official once noted that the problem with the national press corps is it can only keep one idea in its mind at a time. And while that’s often true, it’s not at the moment in regard to Republicans.Today’s media line on the Republican party is it faces irreversible decline. That’s on the one hand. On the other, Republicans have a solid shot at capturing the Senate in the midterm elections in November, are all but certain to retain control of the House, and have reasonable prospects of winning the White House in 2016. That these two scenarios conflict

Oakland -- Children´s Hospital Oakland reached an agreement with the family of Jahi McMath on Friday that will allow a critical care team to enter the hospital to move the girl to an unspecified facility. The agreement, described in the courtroom of Alameda County Superior Court Judge Evelio Grillo, is the latest development in an unusual battle between the hospital and the girl´s family, who is rejecting the declaration that Jahi is dead after doctors determined that she was brain dead. On Friday, the Alameda County Coroner issued a death certificate stating that Jahi died on Dec. 12. The family insists that Jahi

As a Tea Party troublemaker and liberal lightning rod, former Florida Congressman Col. Allen West is used to fending off attacks from Democratic critics. But he admits getting nervous when he thinks about a certain Massachusetts Democrat running the White House. “I’m more ... concerned about Elizabeth Warren than I am about Hillary Clinton,” West said in an interview on Boston Herald Radio. West said despite Warren’s statement that she won’t be in the presidential race, he believes the freshman senator would have a better chance of rallying progressives unimpressed by Clinton’s liberal credentials. “Elizabeth Warren is their

Wednesday was a big day for Charles Dickens, the beloved novelist who died 143 years ago. At the inaugural ceremonies for Mayor Bill de Blasio, singer and activist Harry Belafonte called the justice system under Mike Bloomberg “deeply Dickensian.” The new mayor himself followed suit: “When I said we would take dead aim at the Tale of Two Cities, I meant it,” he said. “And we will do it.” Decrying inequality by invoking the 1859 classic—the title was capitalized in his prepared remarks—is certainly nothing new for de Blasio and his supporters. Neither is the more ballistic phrasing, “taking dead

Eleven GOP attorneys general say the Obama administration is breaking the law by repeatedly making changes to ObamaCare without going through Congress. The attorneys general specifically criticize President Obama´s executive action that allowed insurance companies to keep offering health plans that had been canceled for not meeting ObamaCare´s more rigorous standards. “We support allowing citizens to keep their health insurance coverage, but the only way to fix this problem-ridden law is to enact changes lawfully: through Congressional action,” the attorneys general wrote in a letter to Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Kathleen Sebelius. “The illegal actions by this administration

Obamacare is good for AARP

At first glance, it might not make much sense that AARP, formerly known as the American Association of Retired Persons, would be among the most vigorous of Obamacare advocates. The group bills itself as a non-partisan advocacy group that guards federal programs benefitting older Americans, and its 38 million members give it enormous clout: For years it has blocked common sense reforms to Medicare. But AARP is not working in its members´ interest by acting as a cheerleader for Obamacare. According to the Congressional Budget Office, the program slashes Medicare spending by $741 billion through 2022, and thus endangers access to

With an eye on the upcoming congressional elections, there is a great deal of speculation about what is going to happen in 2014 to Republicans, who are divided and subdivided: Establishment vs. Tea Party, social conservatives vs. libertarians, military hawks vs. deficit hawks, etc. Prognostications about how those tensions are going to play out should be informed by what is not going to happen — for example, the United States of America in 2014 is not on the precipice of: 1) abolishing abortion; 2) restoring the marriage culture of the Eisenhower years; 3) returning to a prelapsarian constitutional order; 4)

With talk of amnesty in the air, it’s a good time to define “whistle-blower.” Spoiler: It ain’t Edward Snowden. Whistle-blowers expose wrongdoing or corruption. Real whistle-blowers even enjoy legal protections. As President Obama said of Snowden: “There were other avenues available for somebody whose conscience was stirred and thought that they needed to question government actions.” Snowden didn’t do that. To the contrary, Snowden specifically sought his job as an NSA contractor and took its oath for the sole purpose of violating it, stealing American secrets and then making them public. Which he did before accepting asylum in a genuine police state, Vladmir

To hear it from the New York Times editorial page, the many issues surrounding the attacks in Benghazi are now settled. In a December 30 editorial, published under the headline “The Facts About Benghazi,” the newspaper proclaims an end to the 15 months of debate about the fatal attacks on the U.S. consulate on September 11, 2012. Citing an “exhaustive investigation by The Times” that it says “goes a long way toward resolving any nagging doubts about what precipitated the attack” and “debunks Republican allegations,” America’s Newspaper of Record declares that “in a rational world” the investigation “would settle the

Yesterday was a momentous day in New York City politics: Chiara de Blasio wore a festive hat, Miranda from Sex and the City made an appearance, and much cheering and merriment was had. Although some of it was reserved for Bill de Blasio´s inauguration and his ambitious plan to reduce the income gap, a lot of the joy was focused on Hillary Clinton´s new bangs. While some news outlets, like Vanity Fair, reported that they were "bangs," the Cut can confirm it: Those side-swept, layered, pieces of fluffy heaven resting ever so gently on our potential first lady president´s forehead

According to a detailed report, Kim Jong Un fed his Uncle Jang Song Thaek to a pack of hungry dogs, a deviation from the traditional method of execution by firing squad. "Jang was stripped naked and thrown into a cage, along with his five closest aides. Then 120 hounds, starved for three days, were allowed to prey on them until they were completely eaten up. This is called "quan jue", or execution by dogs." The report, appearing in a Chinese controlled newspaper, stated that the "execution" lasted for one hour and was supervised by Kim Jong Un and "300 senior officials."

Today, any American who isn´t willfully blind knows this "promise" is a very big lie. A lie which was deliberately told by fundamentally-dishonest pushers of Obamacare, because if the truth were widely known at that time the Affordable Care Act would never have become law. Despite conventional wisdom, Republicans and Democrats can agree on important issues. As a lifelong Republican, I agree with Democrat Warren Buffett: Obamacare should be scrapped. I also agree with Hollywood liberals that NSA spying on millions of innocent Americans is a violation of our collective right to privacy. And I agree with feminist Camille Paglia that Hillary Clinton disqualified herself as a presidential candidate with her handling of Benghazi. Here’s why: The most important duty of the commander in chief is to keep Americans safe. Before the deadly Sept 11, 2012, attack resulting in the brutal murders of U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens,

Bitter cold. Below-zero. Blizzard conditions. Sorry, Northeast. But those are phrases you´ll be using a lot Friday amid a monster storm. And not just the Northeast, forecasters said. About one-third of the nation -- approximately 100 million people in 22 states -- is in the path this storm. But the Northeast will be hardest-hit, the National Weather Service said. "Heaviest snow will fall from central New York to the Massachusetts coast. Blizzard conditions are possible for eastern Long Island and the Massachusetts coast. Bitter cold will move into the Midwest and East following the storm," the Weather Service said. The

During his show Thursday evening, Hayes complained of the "strange bizarre underworld of climate trolls" that came to life when Matt Drudge ironically linked an article on the Drudge Report about cold weather.
