Whoever´s been drugging the tap water in the Acela, please just stop. Your efforts have resulted in complementary columns in the Washington Post from Ruth Marcus and in the New York Times from David Brooks. Unless ... did they come up with these columns all by themselves? Anyway: The shared Brooks/Marcus thesis is that marijuana was basically all right for young people to try years ago, before they became columnists, but that legalizing it will lead to a worse and lazier society. "On balance," writes Marcus, "society will not be better off with another legal mind-altering substance." The Internet´s spent

President Obama’s announcement that he was prepared to completely leave Afghanistan by the end of the year forcibly returned public attention to what has become a forgotten conflict. What exactly happens now? What may happen is the president may leave Afghanistan the way he found it, with no residual presence, essentially abandoning it to events. This is has been called the Zero Option. (Snip) Now that Obama has announced he “moving on” without Karzai it may be pertinent to ask: “going where?”. One way to remember how Obama got to this crossroads is to recall his own plans, given at

It wasn’t the Revenge of the Creature. But at the minimum it seemed like the Revenge of Creation. (Snip) The floods were apparently not only inevitable, but foreseeable. The chief problem to preventing them lay in a policy which maintained that active flood control was bad. Nature treats humans as part of the natural world but environmentalists treat nature as part of the political world. Many a misunderstanding arises therefrom. Alas the rains and the seasons refuse to read Labor Party and Green Left manifestos and the results are often inconvenient. And so the floods came. The indifference of the

Well, perhaps not really completely different, but this seems to be the time of year when there is a dearth of beauty pageants to cover, which is why the Sports Illustrated swimsuit edition comes out around now. (Snip) This year’s SI swimsuit cover girl is . . . Barbie! Hooray! I say “Hooray!” because this turned out to be perfect bait for the angry, humorless cultural Left, which has always hated Barbie. (Who needs Pavlov when you’ve got Leftists?) What really galls the Left is that both SI and Barbie’s maker, Mattel, are “unapologetic” about their partnership, as the New

Michael Ledeen notices something curious. Regimes which have long shrugged off the best efforts to overthrow them are reeling on their foundations. What’s going on? (Snip) Incompetence has a quality all of its own. Even when unnoticed it works to bring down down error, tirelessly, relentlessly and completely, like a colony of termites gnawing on some seemingly invincible pillar of wood. In late 2013 I suggested that president Obama had “single-handedly trashed the Arab world”, commenting on how many of his policies had the exact opposite effect of his stated intentions. They had that effect because they were wrong policies,

We live in ridiculously convenient times. Think about it: Whenever you need any kind of information, about anything, day or night, no matter where you are, you can just tap your finger on your smartphone and within seconds an answer will appear, as if by magic, on the screen. Granted, this answer will be wrong because it comes from the Internet, which is infested with teenagers, lunatics and Anthony Weiner. But it´s convenient. Today everything is convenient. You cook your meals by pushing a microwave button. Your car shifts itself, and your GPS tells you where to go. If you

For the second time this month, a car heading the wrong way on Interstate 275 in Hillsborough County was involved in a fatal crash. Early this morning, a wrong-way driver from Riverview was killed when he struck a box truck just north of Bearss Avenue, the Florida Highway Patrol said. Two people in the truck received minor injuries. At 2:35 a.m., Chase Kaleb Leveille, 25, was driving a 1993 Honda Civic north in the southbound center lane of I-275, when he crashed head-on into an unloaded rental truck going south, troopers said. Lebedev refuses "to communicate, to accept a phone call" from Hagel or the Pentagon. "We haven´t been able to connect with anybody from the Defense Ministry there in Ukraine," he said. CARACAS, Venezuela — Leopoldo López, the defiant Venezuelan opposition leader taken into custody Tuesday in front of thousands of anti-government protesters, spent last night in a prison on a military base. But even there, the government couldn’t shut him up. In a prerecorded video message released hours after his arrest, López urged Venezuelans to continue a campaign of “resistance” to force the resignation or recall of President Nicolás Maduro, a goal López calls “the Exit.” Seated on a sofa beside his wife and appealing directly to Venezuelan youth, López told viewers that what the country needed more than ever was

This summer will mark the 100th anniversary of the beginning of World War I, and we should reflect on the “lessons” we have been taught so often on how to avoid another such devastating conflict. Chief among them seems to be the canard that the Versailles Treaty of 1919 that officially ended the war caused a far worse one just 20 years later — usually in the sense of an unnecessary harshness accorded a defeated Imperial Germany. But how true is that common argument of what John Maynard Keynes called a “Carthaginian peace”? Carthage, remember, was truly emasculated after the

Obama’s Foreign Policy: Enemy Action
FrontPage, by Bruce Thornton    Original Article

It’s often hard to determine whether a series of bad policies results from stupidity or malicious intent. Occam’s razor suggests that the former is the more likely explanation, as conspiracies assume a high degree of intelligence, complex organization, and secrecy among a large number of people, qualities that usually are much less frequent than the simple stupidity, disorganization, and inability to keep a secret more typical of our species. Yet surveying the nearly 6 years of Obama’s disastrous foreign policy blunders, I’m starting to lean towards Goldfinger’s Chicago mob-wisdom: “Once is happenstance. Twice is coincidence. Three times, it’s enemy action.”

MIDDLESBORO — Snake-handling preacher Jamie Coots, who never backed away from his beliefs despite derision, criminal charges and excruciating bites, died Saturday night after being bitten by a rattlesnake during a church service. Family members of Coots, 42, refused medical treatment for him. He was pronounced dead about two hours after the rattler sank its fangs into his right hand. His son said the poison overwhelmed his father within minutes of the bite. "It was the quickest snakebite I ever seen in my life," Coots´ son, Cody, said Sunday. Jamie Coots´ death appears to be the first from a snakebite

Call it what you want -- anti-gay or religious rights -- but if Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer signs a controversial bill, you might not be calling Arizona the home of the 2015 Super Bowl. The Religious Freedom Restoration Act, S.B. 1062, is the current controversy du jour out of Arizona, and the National Football League is with the opposition. “Our policies emphasize tolerance and inclusiveness and prohibit discrimination based on age, gender, race, religion, sexual orientation or any other improper standard,” NFL spokesman Greg Aiello told USA Today. “We are following the issue in Arizona and will continue to do so should

The attorney for Lois Lerner blasted the House GOP for recalling the former IRS official to testify next week, saying it would only serve to embarrass her and could increase threats against Lerner and her family. Bill Taylor, Lerner’s attorney, told House Oversight Chairman Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) that he told committee staff in January that Lerner would continue to invoke her Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination if recalled, and that she would "happily testify" if given immunity. Taylor, of Zuckerman Spaeder, said he heard nothing further from the committee until Issa wrote to him on Tuesday, saying he was hauling Lerner

Were he alive today, Richard Nixon would have to doff his hat to Barack Obama. Compared with how the Obama administration has swept under the rug the Benghazi attacks of September 11, 2012, Nixon’s attempt to cover up the Watergate burglary was rank amateurism. To be fair, Nixon’s team of Haldeman, Ehrlichman, Mitchell, and Dean were not in the same league as Obama’s, which includes not only his cabinet but most of the national media and much of Congress. If a president were intent on covering something up—something big, such as an illegal gun walking operation to Mexico or a dereliction
