A run of bad luck

The administration’s Foreign Policy has been going badly for some time. Al-Qaeda has been retaking Western Iraq. The Coalition anticipates losing much if not most of the territory it gained from the Taliban the minute it leaves Afghanistan. President Obama’s “war of necessity” in Afghanistan is now officially more unpopular than Iraq at its most unpopular. Heck it’s more unpopular than Vietnam. US intelligence estimates the whole thing will collapse when the coalition pulls out. A civil war may be breaking out in Lebanon. President Obama has abandoned the Western-backed rebels in Syria and reached out to the Islamists. The

Comments:
As the old expression goes: You make your own luck. Since 1/20/2009 the Executive Branch and its obedient lackeys among the congressional Democrats have gotten every substantive policy wrong--not just wrong, but 180 degrees wrong, as if it were intended. There will be a time of reckoning. It´s nice to know that the fatheaded fatbodied Michael Moore thinks that after PP&ACA was being passed with zero Republican votes, the conservative Heritage Foundation crawled into Reid and Pelosi´s ears, took residence in their brains, and wrote all the enabling clauses. Sheesh.

Perhaps the saddest and funniest story in recent days comes from Forbes. Merrill Matthews, himself an insurance industry leader, writes about how his industry was led on by the golden visions of Obamacare only to find itself in a waterless desert. While being courted by the president they were shown fleeting glimpses of gold and jewels. But what they got instead was a website that wouldn’t accept payments and a set of rules that forced them to accept non-paying customers, retroactively. (Snip) And since many new Obamacare patients are in fact being put on expanded Medicaid they will soon learn

A few months ago the Atlantic explained why no one should oppose extensions to unemployment insurance. The unemployed were jobless through no fault of their own. There were three applicants to every job but not enough jobs. There wasn’t enough demand for labor. The labor market was “broken,” it explained. What was needed was to create a demand for jobs. At least they never went as far as to suggest what Nancy Pelosi adventured: that unemployment insurance was itself a form of employment. (Snip) Wow! It’s that simple. In answer to the question of where the money was going to

Lost in the global outrage over the NSA’s spying program is a surprising fact: the most sought-after item of US aid isn’t relief goods or money. It’s intelligence assistance. (Snip) The power of signals intelligence was demonstrated to Colombian leaders when it was used to find and kill mega drug-lord Pablo Escobar, a saga which was dramatically recounted by Mark Bowden in his book Killing Pablo. Escobar killed practically the entire Colombian Supreme court in a single hit, destroyed a commercial airliner, ordered the deaths of top ranking police and military officials. Nothing could withstand him, except the Colossus of

HERNANDO COUNTY - A sign leading to Eagle Nest Sink compares it with the cave-diving equivalent of climbing Mount Everest. The enormous underground system reaches depths of more than 300 feet and has a main room the size of a football field. Warnings posted near a dock at the side of the sinkhole say the descent is dangerous and should only be attempted by certified and experienced cave divers using a combination of gas and air in their tanks. On Christmas Day, Darrin Spivey and his 15-year-old son Dillon Sanchez made it down 233 feet using air alone. They died on their way back up. Neither was a certified cave diver.

Earlier today, I noted a CNN poll that has the GOP out front on the generic Congressional preference question by five points, 49%/44%. When Republicans are on the short end of such polls–as, for example, after the recent partial government slowdown–there is no shortage of advice from the media. Move to the center! Get rid of those “radicals!” Become Democrats! Note, however, the deafening silence when the Democrats are trailing in the same polls. That doesn’t mean, of course, that the Dems aren’t paying attention. Within a few hours after the CNN poll came out, the Democrats’ “Rapid Response” team

The Marine Corps Times reports that Edward Snowden has declared his mission “already accomplished” in a public interview. “Snowden told The Washington Post in an interview published online Monday night that he was satisfied because journalists have been able to tell the story of the government’s collection of bulk Internet and phone records, an activity that has grown dramatically in the decade since the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.” But Snowden is prematurely congratulating himself. He didn’t finish the NSA. However, Cass Sunstein undoubtedly will. In August 2013, President Obama appointed Sunstein to serve on the NSA oversight panel.

The people in charge of the Obamacare rollout have may their difficult position even worse. The root of the latest self-inflicted catastrophe is their determination to forge ahead with an flawed product by simply papering over the cracks. These bands aids eventually come off and they find themselves worse off than before. Having attained the dubious achievement of canceling millions of policies in America, including practically all the health care insurance in Guam without providing a working replacement system, the administration has decided to temporarily allow people to buy the “bare-bones” insurance policies formerly allowed only to people under 30.

Antibiotics of the future

Scientists are working to develop new strategies to combat the growing threat of germs that current antibiotics can´t fight. Some researchers are testing new substances, such as silver, to combine with antibiotics to boost their killing power. Other researchers are making use of genetic sequencing of bacteria to help develop killer drugs at a faster pace than medical science was capable of in the past. Another strategy aims to render harmful bacteria incapable of infecting people, rather than killing the germs outright. One such technique would neutralize disease-causing toxins by disrupting the bacteria´s internal mechanisms.

Some days bring up an assortment of news that can only be called a snapshot of the times. No common thread runs through them except a kind of spirit of the age. It’s a day in the life, bringing both good and bad. The first snippet is news that the fake sign language interpreter present at the Mandela funeral was once part of a group that burned people to death. “They told The Associated Press that the group placed tires around the men’s necks and set them ablaze. Boxing finished the year with a bout for the ages on Saturday, when Marcos Maidana wrested the WBA welterweight title from the previously undefeated Adrian Broner at the Alamodome in San Antonio. The 24-year-old Broner (27-1), a brash, consummate fighter who has modeled both his life and boxing styles on Floyd "Money" Mayweather, entered the bout as the heavy favorite, but found himself on the canvas twice before losing a unanimous decision. Maidana, the 30-year-old Argentine, landed 231 of 663 power punches in the upset, improving his record to 35-3. More than a just captivating contest, Saturday´s fight made it

Yesterday was a momentous day in New York City politics: Chiara de Blasio wore a festive hat, Miranda from Sex and the City made an appearance, and much cheering and merriment was had. Although some of it was reserved for Bill de Blasio´s inauguration and his ambitious plan to reduce the income gap, a lot of the joy was focused on Hillary Clinton´s new bangs. While some news outlets, like Vanity Fair, reported that they were "bangs," the Cut can confirm it: Those side-swept, layered, pieces of fluffy heaven resting ever so gently on our potential first lady president´s forehead

According to a detailed report, Kim Jong Un fed his Uncle Jang Song Thaek to a pack of hungry dogs, a deviation from the traditional method of execution by firing squad. "Jang was stripped naked and thrown into a cage, along with his five closest aides. Then 120 hounds, starved for three days, were allowed to prey on them until they were completely eaten up. This is called "quan jue", or execution by dogs." The report, appearing in a Chinese controlled newspaper, stated that the "execution" lasted for one hour and was supervised by Kim Jong Un and "300 senior officials."

Despite conventional wisdom, Republicans and Democrats can agree on important issues. As a lifelong Republican, I agree with Democrat Warren Buffett: Obamacare should be scrapped. I also agree with Hollywood liberals that NSA spying on millions of innocent Americans is a violation of our collective right to privacy. And I agree with feminist Camille Paglia that Hillary Clinton disqualified herself as a presidential candidate with her handling of Benghazi. Here’s why: The most important duty of the commander in chief is to keep Americans safe. Before the deadly Sept 11, 2012, attack resulting in the brutal murders of U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens,

Bitter cold. Below-zero. Blizzard conditions. Sorry, Northeast. But those are phrases you´ll be using a lot Friday amid a monster storm. And not just the Northeast, forecasters said. About one-third of the nation -- approximately 100 million people in 22 states -- is in the path this storm. But the Northeast will be hardest-hit, the National Weather Service said. "Heaviest snow will fall from central New York to the Massachusetts coast. Blizzard conditions are possible for eastern Long Island and the Massachusetts coast. Bitter cold will move into the Midwest and East following the storm," the Weather Service said. The
