LAKE COUNTY, Calif. – Most people start off a new year with big personal goals, but one local teenager has a challenging new project going into 2014 meant to benefit others. Fourteen-year-old Erica Illg of Kelseyville has launched her “Backpacks for Foster Kids” project. [Snip] For her Emerald Star project – which also is a project under the “Revolution of Responsibility” program – she has decided to raise funds in order to provide backpacks to children when they´re placed in foster care. She and her younger sister, 13-year-old Kimberly, came up with the idea after seeing, firsthand, the challenges that foster children face.

FORT WAYNE – The little girl with long, dark hair sat on the sofa and nestled protectively beside her parents as they took turns telling a remarkable story of how she fought epilepsy and how she has beaten it for a year and a half. For 10 about minutes – not much longer – Autumn Forti listened patiently, perhaps reliving moments she would prefer to forget and maybe someday will.

LAKE COUNTY, Calif. – An appellate court has overturned a local insurance salesman´s October 2011 conviction for felony theft from an elder. In its Tuesday decision, the First Appellate District Court of Appeal found that the case against Glenn Neasham lacked evidence that he had appropriated an elderly woman´s money for his own use or anyone else´s, and that there also wasn´t proof that he had made any misrepresentations in selling her an annuity in February 2008.

LAKEPORT, Calif. – An initiative effort that proposes to institute rent control in the city of Lakeport´s senior mobile home parks has gathered enough signatures to appear before Lakeport voters on the November 2014 ballot. [snip] It would roll back all rental rates in such parks to Jan. 1, 2012, requiring that future rent increases be based on the percent Social Security benefits are raised. Strasser initially had asked the city of Lakeport to consider the matter, but when those discussions didn't move forward he started gathering signatures this spring. He needed 270 valid signatures from Lakeport voters to get onto the next municipal ballot, according to Fridley.

Students at three Dearborn elementary schools received the flyers. A large number of Muslim students attend the schools. A triumphant President Barack Obama declared Tuesday his signature medical insurance overhaul a success, saying it has made America´s health care system ´a lot better´ in a Rose Garden press conference. But buried in the 7.1 million enrollments he announced in a heavily staged appearance is a more unsettling reality. Numbers from a RAND Corporation study that has been kept under wraps suggest that barely 858,000 previously uninsured Americans – nowhere near 7.1 million – have paid for new policies and joined the ranks of the insured by Monday night.

Former GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney has sworn off running again for elected office, but Americans have certainly heard that one before. Speculation that Romney might run again has largely been stoked by the reunion he planned to host last month in Park City, Utah, for members of his 2012 campaign and debate team and a string of recent public appearances. He has appeared on TV news shows 12 times in the past six months. That’s essentially on pace with Michigan GOP Rep. Mike Rogers, who led all national politicians last year with 26 appearances over 12 months. Romney has
