Latin American Herald Tribune, by Staff

Original Article

Posted By:PageTurner, 1/3/2014 2:03:39 PM

LA PAZ – Bolivia will have a nuclear power industry in the near future, President Evo Morales said Wednesday during a military ceremony in the central region of Cochabamba. “I want to tell you, we are not far ... from having atomic energy because we have sufficient prime material and we have the right,” the head of state said. Bolivia has uranium deposits, though they have yet to be quantified or thoroughly evaluated. Morales said in late October that Bolivia was getting assistance from France and Argentina in developing nuclear energy for power and medical purposes.

Comments:
A nuclear tipped Bolivia. This should keep Chile on its toes.

The Chinese icebreaker that helped rescue 52 passengers from a Russian ship stranded in Antarctic ice found itself stuck in heavy ice, further complicating the 9-day “roller-coaster” rescue operation. “Snow Dragon” (Xue Long) had ferried the passengers from the stranded Russian ship to an Australian icebreaker late on Thursday. But it now has concerns about its own ability to move through heavy ice, the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) said. “It will attempt to maneuver through the ice when tidal conditions are most suitable during the early hours of 4 January 2014,” AMSA said. ”Xue Long notified AMSA at 1pm AEDT this

Just days after the Chinese rover Jade Rabbit settled down on the moon, China is setting out to bolster its presence in another remote place: Antarctica. Chinese state media said on Thursday that construction workers are en route to the future site of China’s fourth Antarctic research station, after a pit stop at one of its other bases. The new station will be a hub for climate change science – as well as a possible linchpin in China’s effort to ensure for itself a voice in future negotiations about Antarctica’s valuable natural resources, analysts say. China is a relative latecomer to

Big Government: As the new year kicks in, a French high court has OK´d a 75% tax hike on France´s top earners in the interest of "l´egalite." In reality, it will lead to the destruction of wealth and the loss of French talent. Fulfilling his cornerstone campaign promise to stick it to "the rich," French President Francois Hollande gave France its highest taxes in history, forcing French employers to pay a 50% tax rate on employees who make more than $1.4 million (1 million euros) a year for two years. Before you whine about an airline temporarily losing your luggage, think of poor Boujemaa Razgui. The flute virtuoso who performs regularly with The Boston Camerata lost 13 handmade flutes over the holidays when a US Customs official at New York’s JFK Airport mistook the instruments for pieces of bamboo and destroyed them. Razgui, a Canadian citizen who lives some of the time in Brockton, had flown last week from Morocco to Boston, with stops in Madrid and New York. In New York, he says, an official opened his luggage and found the 13 flutelike instruments — 11 nays and two kawalas.

Mexico City - Mexico´s oil revenues dropped 1.8 percent in the January-November period, compared to the same period in 2012, but non-petroleum tax revenues rose 3.9 percent, the government said. Public sector budget revenues fell 1.2 percent in real terms during the first 11 months of 2013, compared to the January-November period last year, the Finance Secretariat said. Oil revenues fell as a result of a drop in the average price of Mexico´s crude exports, lower oil and gas production, and a stronger peso, the secretariat said in a report.

Over the last 12 months some 3,000 Cubans, mostly doctors, have arrived in the United States after deserting one of the Venezuelan government´s social programs they staff. This accounts for a 60% increase as compared with 2012. In 2012 there were about 5,000 refugee Cuban doctors and nurses in the United States coming from all over the world. Through December 1, 2013 this figure had surged to 8,000, 98% of them came from Venezuela. These are estimates by Dr. Julio Cesar Alfonso, head of the South Florida group Solidarity Without Borders Inc. (SWB), which helps Cuban medical professionals who try

Fifteen months after the Sept. 11 attack in Benghazi which killed Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans, the narrative of the attack continues to be shaped, and reshaped, by politicians and the press. But a New York Times report published over the weekend has angered sources who were on the ground that night. Those sources, who continue to face threats of losing their jobs, sharply challenged the Times’ findings that there was no involvement from Al Qaeda or any other international terror group and that an anti-Islam film played a role in inciting the initial wave of attacks. “It was a

When U.S. officials warn about "attacks" on electric power facilities these days, the first thing that comes to mind is probably a computer hacker trying to shut the lights off in a city with malware. But a more traditional attack on a power station in California has U.S. officials puzzled and worried about the physical security of the the electrical grid--from attackers who come in with guns blazing. Around 1:00 AM on April 16, at least one individual (possibly two) entered two different manholes at the PG&E Metcalf power substation, southeast of San Jose, and cut fiber cables in the

Yesterday was a momentous day in New York City politics: Chiara de Blasio wore a festive hat, Miranda from Sex and the City made an appearance, and much cheering and merriment was had. Although some of it was reserved for Bill de Blasio´s inauguration and his ambitious plan to reduce the income gap, a lot of the joy was focused on Hillary Clinton´s new bangs. While some news outlets, like Vanity Fair, reported that they were "bangs," the Cut can confirm it: Those side-swept, layered, pieces of fluffy heaven resting ever so gently on our potential first lady president´s forehead

Chicken has officially overtaken beef as the most popular meat product being consumed in the U.S. and the trend looks likely to continue in 2014. While the per capita consumption of beef has dropped from a peak of 90lbs per capita in the 1970s to 50 lbs in 2012, chicken consumption has gone the other way rising from under 20 lbs in 1960 to about 55 lbs in 2012. Americans now eat less beef then we did in 1955, but is the change a result of a healthier diet or because people are choosing the cheaper option? The answer is

According to a detailed report, Kim Jong Un fed his Uncle Jang Song Thaek to a pack of hungry dogs, a deviation from the traditional method of execution by firing squad. "Jang was stripped naked and thrown into a cage, along with his five closest aides. Then 120 hounds, starved for three days, were allowed to prey on them until they were completely eaten up. This is called "quan jue", or execution by dogs." The report, appearing in a Chinese controlled newspaper, stated that the "execution" lasted for one hour and was supervised by Kim Jong Un and "300 senior officials."

Despite conventional wisdom, Republicans and Democrats can agree on important issues. As a lifelong Republican, I agree with Democrat Warren Buffett: Obamacare should be scrapped. I also agree with Hollywood liberals that NSA spying on millions of innocent Americans is a violation of our collective right to privacy. And I agree with feminist Camille Paglia that Hillary Clinton disqualified herself as a presidential candidate with her handling of Benghazi. Here’s why: The most important duty of the commander in chief is to keep Americans safe. Before the deadly Sept 11, 2012, attack resulting in the brutal murders of U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens,

There were expectations that a helicopter would on Thursday begin ferrying trapped passengers off the Russian ship and onto the Xue Long. The attorneys general specifically criticize President Obama´s executive action that allowed insurance companies to keep offering health plans that had been canceled for not meeting ObamaCare´s more rigorous standards. “We support allowing citizens to keep their health insurance coverage, but the only way to fix this problem-ridden law is to enact changes lawfully: through Congressional action,” the attorneys general wrote in a letter to Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Kathleen Sebelius. “The illegal actions by this administration
