Chinese icebreaker trapped in
Antarctica after rescuing
passengers from Russian vessel

The Chinese icebreaker that helped rescue 52 passengers from a Russian ship stranded in Antarctic ice found itself stuck in heavy ice, further complicating the 9-day “roller-coaster” rescue operation. “Snow Dragon” (Xue Long) had ferried the passengers from the stranded Russian ship to an Australian icebreaker late on Thursday. But it now has concerns about its own ability to move through heavy ice, the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) said. “It will attempt to maneuver through the ice when tidal conditions are most suitable during the early hours of 4 January 2014,” AMSA said. ”Xue Long notified AMSA at 1pm AEDT this

what seems to have happened is that they were choppered off the stuck Russian ship by the Chinese and ferried to the Aussie vessel. And now the Chinese vessel is also stuck.

What an international cluster for these warmers. I´ll bet the beaches of Australia are looking mighty good right about now...

Seems God is holding them hostage. I do not understand why they had to be rescued in the first place. They were there to study global warming. This is a perfect example to study, except it may not provide them with the "correct" result. Is that why they have to ´get out of Dodge´?

I´m visualizing a archipelago of icebreakers, all frozen in ice, stretching from Antarctica to New Zealand, and helicopters hopscotching across them as they ferry global warming researchers to and fro. Do you suppose the fact that it is high summer in the Antarctic has shaken their confidence in their theory?

It didn´t remind me of lawyer jokes but it may create a new category altogether.

In many respects the brutal winters and lack of obvious warming is already tormenting the climate science establishment.

"icebreaker" may become a comedy trigger word. One which can be used in any conversation to signal ridicule or doubt.

India´s Supreme Court has created an official third sex for its transgender eunuchs and announced they will have a quota of government jobs and college places to help them overcome discrimination. The decision was met with jubilation by transgender charities who said it was a milestone in their fight against marginalisation in Indian society. "We are elated and thankful to the court," said Kalki Subramanium, a leading transgender rights activist. "The decision has come after a century of suppression and marginalisation by the legal and social systems. "This verdict is certainly landmark and a new beginning. The biggest challenge is the social recognition.

At least 12 people are dead and more than 2,000 homes have been destroyed by a large fire that wreaked havoc over the weekend in Valparaiso, Chile. Some 10,000 people have been forced to evacuate parts of the port city. Government spokesman Álvaro Elizalde says those figures are likely to go up as the fire continues to burn. The fire has been driven by strong winds, and efforts to fight the flames also have been complicated by the area´s steep terrain and lack of essential infrastructure, as NPR´s Lourdes Garcia-Navarro reports for our Newscast unit. Amnesty: President Obama often laments "our broken immigration system" as a reason for his failure to enforce its laws. But as a wave of illegals is about to descend here, the hard fact is that it´s his own policies that broke it. The nonpartisan Inter-American Development Bank and the Migration Policy Institute both reported optimal conditions for a big wave of illegal immigration into the U.S. from Mexico and Central America soon. Based on the slowdown in China´s economy, a recovery in U.S. low-skilled jobs such as construction, and rising U.S. interest rates, it´s fair enough.

Two white adults divided the toys, one equally and the other unequally. Seventy per cent of the toddlers chose to play with the researcher who distributed the toys fairly. But in a second test, when one researcher favoured a white recipient over an Asian one, they picked the ‘fair’ researcher less often, the journal Frontiers in Psychology reports. How do you ensure that you won’t be ostracized, denounced, or fired if you are a media celebrity, captain of industry, or high public official? For some, sexist banter is certainly no problem. Stand-up comedian Bill Maher called Sarah Palin a c–t and a tw-t, but suffered no ill consequences. David Letterman joked on air that Sarah Palin’s 14-year-old daughter had had sex with Alex Rodriguez during a New York Yankees game. There was no downside to that either. President Obama tosses around “sweetie” as he wishes. No problem with that. No one believes Barack could be condescending to women.
