Don´t extend unemployment benefits
Washington Examiner [DC], by David Freddoso

People who find themselves unemployed today are no more lazy or unworthy than you or I. They´ve just fallen on hard times -- as a lot of people have in recent years, and as more are sure to in the years to come. They don´t want to go on unemployment benefits, which in most cases pay much less than nearly any job. But that doesn´t mean it´s a good idea to maintain a permanent unemployment benefits regime that goes on for a year or even two. As the new year began, Congress allowed its extended unemployment benefit program to expire. Depending on

When unemployment benefits are, in fact, a safety net for those who find themselves out of work and need some support while searching for another job, I support the program.

But extended unemployment invites abuse of the system, and encourages the development of a parasite class.

Extending the unemployment benefits just papers over the dismal economic policies of the Obama regime.
I guarantee that if benefits had not been extended over and over again, public sentiment would have been a lot different in the 2012 elections.
They woulda thrown the bum out

I would rather see the minimum wage increased than unemployment benefits extended. I know there are arguments for and against both, but I don´t like to see a situation where the unemployed are bringing home more money than those who are working to clean the floors, flip the burgers, and man the call centers.

Here is my stance, do away with it all-together. I do not believe the government should be in the "safety net" business at all. Sound harsh? Yep, it is. But it is gonna take some harshness to get this country turned around.

Hunger is a powerful motivator. Handouts are not.

They will extend it because they are afraid the starving masses will rise up and kick them out. On the other hand, there are no jobs, and the ones there went to the illegal aliens. But, it is true, the government should not be in the safety net business. But, again, the government should not be in a lot of the businesses they are in.

Somewhere a line needs to be drawn between a safety net for people out of work and the government paying people not to work!

This says plainly and simply we cannot allow any type of comprehensive immigration bill when citizens are unable to find family wage jobs. It is not beneficial to anyone to support a population sustained by indefinitely extended unemployment benefits.

Unemployment benefits are like insurance. Part of the employer contribution to the payroll tax is for unemployment benefits. It is supposed to last 26 weeks. I think most people on unemployment delay looking for work until their benefits end. It´s free money to them, after all. As long as benefits are extended, the unemployment rate will stay high.

Took me 6 months to find a job. Mortgage payments depleted all my savings. Had to suck up my pride and engaged in job search 24/7. Found one for lower pay and now, making more than before. America rewards hard work, self sacrifice and perseverance. America is still a land of opportunity....I think.

The search for debris from missing Malaysia Airlines flight 370 has not turned up any evidence of a crash, but it has trained the world’s gaze on thousands of pieces of junk floating on the ocean’s surface. Much of that debris could be made up of plastics, old appliances or parts of homes that have washed away from fragile communities, and cargo containers from ships, according to ocean advocacy group One World One Ocean. Check out some of the facts about what’s really floating in our oceans: The Pacific Garbage Patches: The most heavily-researched and well-known example of plastic pollution in the ocean

The news media were ecstatic when the government said in January that the economy grew by 3.2 percent in the final three months of 2013. It was convincing proof, they said on the nightly news, that the economy had finally recovered from its chronic lethargy. However, according to a revised estimate released Thursday by the U.S. Commerce Department´s Bureau of Economic Analysis, that 3.2 percent figure was a wild exaggeration. The U.S. gross domestic product (GDP), the broadest measure of our country’s entire economic output, grew no more than 2.6 percent in the fourth quarter — a pitifully low growth rate for

You may remember Leland Yee. He´s a state senator from San Francisco who´s appeared in this column a couple of times before: in 2009, when he objected (unsuccessfully) to the appointment of a University of California chancellor who´d been linked to a possible scandal at the University of Illinois; and in 2011, when he demanded an apology from Rush Limbaugh for "mimicking the Chinese language" in a segment mocking Hu Jintao, then "paramount leader" of communist China. The former acting director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, John Sandweg, published an op-ed this week calling, in effect, for the abolition of immigration law. Sandweg, a criminal defense attorney and Arizona crony of Janet Napolitano, wrote in relation to President Obama’s directive that ICE reexamine enforcement policies with an eye toward making them more “humane.” To that end, he says ICE “should eliminate ‘non-criminal re-entrants and immigration fugitives’ as a priority category for deportation.” What that means is that people who have been formally deported and then sneak back in should be exempted from further attempts at removing them, even though

WASHINGTON, D.C. - In any organization as large as the United States government, some things are bound to slip through the cracks. But how about an entire building? How about tens of thousands of buildings - all sitting empty at taxpayer expense. No one has been coming to work in the USDA Cotton Annex building for some time. Just blocks from the White House, it´s been vacant for six years. It´s one of 77,000 empty buildings the government continues to own and maintain, costing taxpayers $1.5 billion a year in electric bills, roof repairs, and other monthly costs. People are always complaining that there´s nothing but bad news out there, but they´re wrong. Market researchers estimate that U.S. chewing gum sales have fallen 11% in the past four years and that the slide will keep on going. I can think of nothing more inspiring in recent history. Having worked for four summers in a bubble-gum factory while in college—and having never once thought about touching a stick of gum again—I can visualize no substance more disgusting, no habit more repellent, no entity more antithetical to basic human dignity than chewing gum. Happy birthday Wrigley Field, but are you too beautiful of a ballpark? After all, attendance at games is more sensitive to beer prices—much more—than it is to the Cubs’ record. Wrigley Field, the dead-ball-era ballpark wedged into perhaps Chicago’s hippest north-side neighborhood, turns 100 this April. With its ivy-shrouded walls, manually operated scoreboard, and concrete-and-steel edifice, it survives as a monument to architectural beauty and athletic ineptitude. The Chicago Cubs, those loveable losers of the National League, have called the friendly confines of Wrigley home for the past 98 years, and not once in that time have they won the World
