Sorry Justin Bieber. Uploading your mug to millions of followers is now deemed officially annoying. That’s because “selfie” tops the 2013 List of Words to be Banished from the Queen´s English for Misuse, Overuse, and General Uselessness. The annual list, which started in 1975, is released every New Year’s Eve by Lake Superior State University in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. Catapulting to the top of more than 2,000 nominations, “selfie” gained momentum to due the convergence of social networks and smartphone technology, which enabled widespread cultural narcissism. Now with the ability to take self-portraits and

How about awesome heading the list? Anyone doubting the extraordinary usage of this word in every wrong way possible has only to listen to HGTV and watch any show where something is rebuilt or designed—for free. If "awesome" isn´t used at least 100 times in the first 15 minutes…well it´s not likely.
Everything is "awesome" from a new toilet to a drain hole in a floor to a hideously constructed something or another made out of old barrel staves or reused barn wood. When the obnoxious/dimwitted woman or man reaping the free benefits is asked about what is unfolding he or she screeches "awesome" which is the answer to all questions regardless and the universal comment to express thought.

Language has become a contrived convenience for those too lazy to learn—there´s no end to the created words that have nothing to do with the subject at hand. Thanks to the despotic media all the help needed for sloppy and insulting language to proliferate is provided. Best example at hand is how the word "twerk" entered the language and with lightning speed had common usage thanks to the repetitive reporting of the gyrations of a vile, filthy young woman who once would have been treated as she deserves for the awful things she´s doing. Last of all, let us ot forget our schools, parents, and others who care less and do nothing.

In the case of twerk and selfie, it´s not the words so much as the actual behavior they describe which is so annoying.

As for mute point, great catch #11 - that´s simply an error of vocabulary, and unintentionally funny to boot. I collect such malapropisms. ;-)

KIEV/MOSCOW - Armed separatists took virtual control of a city in eastern Ukraine on Saturday and Kiev prepared troops to deal with what it called an "act of aggression by Russia". Pro-Russian activists carrying automatic weapons seized government buildings in Slaviansk and set up barricades on the outskirts of the city. Official buildings in several neighboring towns were also attacked. The developments have increased concerns of a possible "gas war" that could disrupt energy supplies across the continent. One government-operated system will cover all 620,000 of Vermont’s citizens. The hope is that such a system will allow Vermont to get costs down closer to Canada’s, as well as improve health by coordinating care and ensuring universal coverage. Following the massacre of grammar-school children in Newtown, Conn., in December 2012, high-powered weapons have been used to kill innocent victims in more senseless public incidents. Those killings, however, are only a fragment of the total harm caused by the misuse of firearms. Each year, more than 30,000 people die in the United States in firearm-related incidents. Many of those deaths involve handguns. The adoption of rules that will lessen the number of those incidents should be a matter of primary concern to both federal and state legislators.
