The healthcare law faced a very tough year in 2013, but that could pale in comparison to what happens in 2014. Between new exchange plans taking effect in January, the first enrollment period concluding in March and the midterm elections in November, the administration will have its hands full managing the rollout and mitigating negative stories for vulnerable Democrats. Here are the top five stories to watch: 1) Enrollment -The end of March will bring analysis of how many people enrolled in ObamaCare´s new insurance exchanges. a tradition more than 100 years old

Organizers expect a million people will be in New York City´s Times Square when U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor, a Bronx native, flips the switch to start the ball drop. It´s a tradition with a fascinating past. "This is the largest crystal ball in the world," said Jeff Strauss, president of Countdown Entertainment. "We´re getting ready for New Year´s Eve. We´ve just installed all of the 2,688 Waterford crystal triangles with a new pattern." Every year the ball tells a different story. Strauss is excited about this year´s theme -- the gift of imagination.

We all remember candidate Obama´s speeches and promises to unite the nation: "As he climbed the political heap, a young Barack Obama roused audiences with promises to unite the nation. He was a Senate candidate in 2004 when he told the Democratic national convention, "There is not a liberal America and a conservative America. There is a United States of America." In 2007, he declared early in his presidential run that "I don´t want to pit red America against blue America. I want to be the president of the United States of America." A year later, after he won the

As part of This Week With George Stephanopoulos’ year-end review of 2013 “Game Changers,” ABC White House Correspondent Jonathan Karl sat down with Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) at Tortilla Coast, the now-infamous D.C. restaurant where Cruz held one of his meetings amidst the government shutdown, and was quite visibly taken aback when Cruz told him that he was trying to stay out of the political fray. “This is a city where it’s all politics, all the time,” Cruz said, “and I’m trying to do my best not to pay attention to the politics.” “Really?” Karl asked, incredulous. “I know that’s

Benghazi: The New York

They never give up at the New York Times. If at first they don’t succeed in twisting the truth to fit the Newspeak fit to print, it’s try, try again. Their latest exercise in mendacity is “A Deadly Mix in Benghazi,” an elaborate essay that substitutes a plethora of irrelevant details and animated graphics for historical truth. The long essay takes up an event which, in a rational world, would have led the to resignation of former Secretary of State Hilary Clinton and the impeachment of President Barack Obama. I mean the terrorist attack on our consular facility at Benghazi,

Harold Simmons, a billionaire who helped finance the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth attack ads against Senator John Kerry in the 2004 presidential election and donated substantially to other conservative causes, died on Saturday in Dallas. He was 82. His death was confirmed by Greg Abbott, the Texas attorney general, in a statement. Mr. Simmons, who started out in business with a single drugstore in Dallas, became a buyout investor and made his fortune by buying stakes in major companies. The New York Times´s extensive exposé on the September 11 Benghazi attacks turned up no ties to Al Qaeda. By highlighting obscure militiamen and ignoring the roles of White House officials, the piece continues an alarming trend of dismissiveness toward the Obama administration´s greatest foreign policy scandal. The Times´s David Kirkpatrick assembles a long-form argument in the paper this week that the White House could do little to stop the attack which he concludes was a spontaneous reaction to an anti-Muslim YouTube video in part aided by the work of non-Al Qaeda related militiamen. Kirkpatrick writes that, while the unease

The New York Times on Sunday published a highly controversial report claiming the September 2012 attack on our consulate in Benghazi, Libya, did not involve al Qaeda, and was as the Administration originally stated a spontaneous demonstration in response to an American-made anti-Islamic video. Appearing on Fox News Sunday, House Intelligence Committee Chairman Mike Rogers (R-Mich.) completely refuted the article saying, "[T]hat story is just not accurate" (video follows with transcript and commentary): CHRIS WALLACE, HOST: Before we get to the NSA, "The New York Times" has an extensive investigation this morning into the Benghazi attack on its front page. The most inoffensive, milquetoast king of late night comedy has emerged as a hero willing to speak truth to power. Jay Leno is on his way out as the host of “The Late Show” on NBC. He’s leaving with both guns blazing, and they are aimed squarely at the most powerful institutions in the United States: television executives and President Barack Obama. Leno’s monologues, long derided by fellow comics as the “Wal-Mart” of stand-up, took a sharp turn in March when rumors began circulating that he would be replaced by Fever Pitch star Jimmy Fallon. “It’s so bad, ‘The Biggest

It isn´t the retirement George Warren dreamed of. Confined to a wheelchair and living on disability payments after losing his job, Warren, 63, figures he would be homeless in old age if not for a senior housing program offered by Catholic Charities of Maryland. "I had plans, but life had other plans for me," he says. Warren worked for decades, starting with a "sophisticated lemonade stand" he opened with friends at age 9. He paid into Social Security as he meandered through a half-dozen jobs in telecommunications and networking. But he lost his last job in what he calls an age-related

A top congressional Republican is saying a new report that concludes Al Qaeda did not carry out the 2012 attack on the U.S diplomatic compound in Benghazi, Libya, is “misleading.” The new report published Saturday in the New York Times concludes that there was no evidence that Al Qaeda or other international terrorist groups had any role in the assault that killed four Americans on September 11, 2012, and that it appeared that the attack was fueled in large part by anger at an American-made anti-Islamic video, as the Obama administration first claimed. A closeted gay student living in West Monroe, Louisiana has written a powerful essay, criticizing the town´s most famous residents - Duck Dynasty star Phil Robertson. Robertson made headlines after issuing homophobic comments in a GQ article, at one point comparing gay sex to bestiality, which got him put on suspension by the A&E network. But the network announced yesterday that they would be reinstating Robertson to the show, who so far has remained unapologetic about the comments. In a just world, all the people who have piled on to the federal government for blowing the launch of healthcare.gov would take a look at the UPS Christmas Day screwup and swallow hard. But it´s not a just world, so the lesson of how the nation´s leading parcel delivery service got blindsided by an excess of Internet traffic surely will be ignored. Benghazi, Libya - A Boyish-Looking American Diplomat was meeting for the first time with the Islamist leaders of eastern Libya’s most formidable militias. It was Sept. 9, 2012. Gathered on folding chairs in a banquet hall by the Mediterranean, the Libyans warned of rising threats against Americans from extremists in Benghazi. One militia leader, with a long beard and mismatched military fatigues, mentioned time in exile in Afghanistan. An American guard discreetly touched his gun. “Since Benghazi isn’t safe, it is better for you to leave now,” Mohamed al-Gharabi, the leader of the Rafallah al-Sehati Brigade, later recalled telling the

HONOLULU — On these sun-bathed shores, Barack Obama was born and spent his formative years, soaking in an island sensibility that his wife and friends say is indispensable to understanding who he is as president. Yet in the search for a home for his future presidential library, Hawaii has become the underdog, stuck in Chicago´s perpetual shadow. It´s not for lack of trying. A high-level campaign has been underway here since Obama won the Iowa caucuses in 2008 — before it was even clear he´d win his party´s nomination, much less the presidency. Phil v. The Gays. With which will we side? Or rather, against which will we side? This is the question that society demands we answer. Are we anti-Phil or anti-gay or anti-GLAAD or anti-A&E or anti- … ? Perhaps no other word sums up the Duck Dynasty fiasco as aptly as the word “anti.” Whenever I hear that someone is anti-this or that, I immediately think of the old quip about MADD – are there any mothers for drunk driving? – and ask myself if anyone is really in favor of the particular thing being protested. Since GLAAD has recently taken a hard-line stance against Phil Robertson’s “anti-gay” comments, I’ve been asking myself a
