Don´t Let Death Stop your Social Security
American Thinker, by J. Robert Smith

Uncle Sam, always generous to a fault with taxpayers´ money, doled out about $108 billion in Social Security benefits to the dead in 2012. Give or take a few billion, over a decade that´s about $1 trillion going to folks who crossed the River Styx. Or more likely their kin, who may or may not take portions of the proceeds to decorate their loved ones´ graves. The Washington Times reported on Friday that the Social Security Administration does a spotty job tracking Social Security recipients´ deaths, hence the dollars for the dead. Reports the Times: "Because SSA does not verify death reports from

Prosecution of family member responsible for notifying SS of the death would be a good place to start.

There are people I now are dead, but don´t appear in the Social Security Death Index. I just assumed that no one applied for their death benefit ... but maybe someone is still collecting "on their behalf."

The SSA wasted no time debiting my mothers checking account following her death.

Her insurance premiums had already been paid so I had to cover any other checks she had written.

I was a bit "out of it" immediately following her sudden death but I thought that the funeral director notified SSA of the death for that generous $250 payout.

Death Certificates have to be issued and recorded. How are people able to do this?

The government´s attitude is that it is other people´s money. The real fear is that they will allow this to happen and then use this as leverage to get the perps to inform on their neighbors and thus become part of the vast civilian army.

The same government waste is occurring with dependents of illegal aliens. The government knows tens of billions are going out the door wrongly, but don´t seem motivated to stop the flow.

Family members have no duty to report deaths to Social Security. The government has access to this information and is responsible for acting on it.

The person handling the estate would have a responsibility to reimburse benefits paid improperly.

Once you start collecting SS,you should have to prove that you´re alive, every three years. You give plenty of notice and if they don´t comply by a certain date, you cut the checks off. There´s probably a lot of dead bodies in back yards with a survivor collecting the check.
I´ve always wondered if funeral homes are required to report a new client to the SS office.

You could close the budget deficit simply by having a serious crackdown on gov´t fraud.

This has been on-going problem for decades. In a former career, I worked in the "Direct Deposit" department of an unnamed bank. Social Security has required all benefits to be sent electronically to a bank account since 1994, at a savings of over $1.25 per, it adds up. The "application" for electronic deposit warns that any money sent electronically may be "reclaimed." The culprits are more often adult children, who are "helping Mom manage her finances," rather than spouses, and lack the ethic of honesty.

Without naming names or locations, I can tell 2 stories I had personal knowledge of:

1) Mom and daughter co-signed on a savings account which received Mom´s SSA, daughter didn´t report Mom´s death, and the funds grew with interest for 15 years, when "Mom" failed to respond to a letter from Medicare. The government could only "reclaim" the most recent 12 payments from the account, and attempted to collect the rest from the bank. The money was in the at, and daughter agreed to return the deposits, but balked at returning 15 years of interest, which she felt entitled to keep.

Mom had a single owner account, on the day she entered the (for what turned out to be her "final illness"), her son went to the bank and got a signature card to put him on her account. In this case, son happened to be the comptroller of the town where he lived an hour away. For two years, he transferred her SSA deposit to his personal account on the day it was deposited, before the government reclaimed the most recent 12 payments. He went to court to keep from repaying the bank for the rest of the ill-gotten gains. The bank was prevented by the court from informing his employer of his actions.

First, the money was in the (not at) account.

Second, Mom entered the hospital (I was sure I typed that word.)

I can see why some people have no problem with screwing over SS.

When one of my parents died, I notified SS immediately. SSA made a typo on the date of death and wanted me to pay them over $16k.
They knew the mistake was on their end, but made me go to a SSA office with a copy of the death certificate.

“To me, it’s not a question of ‘if’ we fix our broken immigration laws,” Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan said Wednesday, “it’s really a question of ‘when.’” Ryan, who was making the economic case for reforming our nation’s immigration system, was speaking at a breakfast hosted by the United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. Ryan called the nation’s immigration laws “chief” among the problems that are curbing economic growth. Noting the rate of retirement among baby boomers, Ryan said reforming the immigration system is necessary to fill future jobs. “Please know that we understand the value of immigration,” Ryan told the crowd. “We

A group of conservative House Republicans put a Medicare “doc fix” bill in mortal peril with their objections – but then acquiesced to a plan from GOP leadership to pass it without a vote. The vote was repeatedly delayed this morning as top Republicans scrambled to find the necessary votes for the legislation. Making the problem more difficult: the bill was brought to the floor under suspension of the rules, meaning it needed a 2/3 majority rather than the normal 1/2 majority. When House Republicans penned their Pledge to America in 2010, they convinced American voters they would advance a conservative agenda if they regained control of the House that year. Four years later, what promises have they actually delivered? ObamaCare is still intact, our national debt has grown by $3 trillion, and Republicans have capitulated to Democrats on every issue from the debt ceiling to the budget. Republican leaders in both the House and the Senate have failed conservatives and have failed to keep their Pledge to America. Let’s examine how the GOP pledge has fallen flat. Maine’s tea party governor, reared in poverty, is on a mission to reform the state’s welfare system. Gov. Paul LePage rolled out a four-proposal package on Monday that will get committee hearings in the legislature Tuesday afternoon. The reforms, which mostly tighten restrictions around the program, are part of an ongoing crusade against what LePage has described as a bloated program. “Big, expensive welfare programs riddled with fraud and abuse threaten our future,” he said in his state of the state speech last month. “Too many Mainers are dependent on government handouts. Government dependency has not — and never will— create prosperity.”

Contrary to rumors that the Tea Party is in demise, if Republicans gain control of the Senate and retain control of the House after November, the Tea Party versus establishment battle may just be getting started.
