H1N1 Flu Virus Surfaces In Chicago
CBS News [Chicago], by Staff

Original Article

Posted By:mitzi, 12/27/2013 10:36:17 AM

Nearly two dozen cases of the potentially deadly H1N1 flu virus have been confirmed in the Chicago area, CBS 2 has learned. Finding the flu virus among patients at Loyola University Medical Center is keeping special machines working overtime right now. They’ve detected a sudden burst of the 2009 swine flu spreading right here in the Chicago area. Microbiologist Paul Schreckenberger says last week alone, 21 patients tested positive for Influenza A. All but one of those cases were the 2009 H1N1 swine flu.

First Texas, now Illinois. With all the people traveling over the holidays ... I don´t doubt we´ll be seeing outbreaks all around the country.

I learned my lesson a few years ago when I skipped the shot and just my luck, got the flu. Raging fever and dehydration - ended up in the doctor´s office with an saline drip - then at home in bed for three days. Never was so sick in my life.

In Silicon Valley, where personal quirks and even antisocial personalities are tolerated as long as you are building new products and making money, a socially conservative viewpoint may be one trait you have to keep to yourself. On Thursday, Brendan Eich, who has helped develop some of the web’s most important technologies, resigned under pressure as chief executive of Mozilla, the maker of the popular Firefox web browser, just two weeks after taking the job. (snip) While he was being portrayed as an opponent of gay people, Mr. Eich said he believed in inclusiveness within Mozilla and had never discriminated.

In what the Los Angeles Times is referring to as a meningitis outbreak in L.A.´s gay community, since January 1 there have been eight occurrences of invasive meningococcal disease in L.A. County. Four of those cases have been of gay men, and three of those four have died, officials reported Thursday. North Hollywood and West Hollywood were identified in the Times report as the areas where the sickened men socialized. Invasive meningococcal disease is a serious bacterial infection caused by the bacterium Neisseria meningitidis. When discussing the thoughtcrime prosecution and ouster of Mozilla CEO Brendan Eich last night, I quoted a passage from a First Things article which appeared to assert that Eich´s donation to the campaign for the Prop 8 gay marriage ban in California in 2008 - the sole reason he was hounded out of his job by a fascist mob - was made public when corrupt agents of the Internal Revenue Service leaked the donor list for the National Organization for Marriage to a gay-rights group. John Edwards — who quit his presidential campaign in disgrace when he was caught cheating on his wife — was barred from Bunny Mellon’s funeral by her family. The former US Senator from North Carolina had charmed Rachel Lambert Mellon, known to all as Bunny, into donating $700,000 for his 2008 presidential bid. Prosecutors charged he used some of the money to support his mistress Rielle Hunter, who was then pregnant with his daughter Frances Quinn. When the former politician and his daughter Cate Edwards, who is also his law partner, arrived Friday at Mellon’s funeral at the Trinity Episcopal

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – President Obama compared the Republican budget plan to a "stinkburger" or "meanwich" during a speech here Wednesday, using a series of zingers in an attempt to strike a contrast with the GOP on economic issues in an election year. In a speech to an enthusiastic crowd of 1,400 at the University of Michigan, Obama repeatedly mocked Republican ideas about how to improve the economy, as he touted his own proposal to raise the minimum wage. Obama, who visited the local Zingerman´s deli before the speech, said that Republican proposals to cut taxes for wealthier Americans and

Saudi Arabia has officially identified atheists as terrorists in sweeping new laws that threaten up to 20 years in prison for almost any criticism of the government or Islam. The regulations place secular citizens who commit thought crimes in the same category as violent terrorist groups such as Al-Qaeda´s Yemen branch and Saudi Hezbollah. Under the new decree by King Abdullah, Saudi Arabia will jail for up to 20 years anyone who fights in conflicts abroad - an apparent move to deter Saudis from joining rebels in Syria. The pair spent three years studying the history of the chalice and last week published a book, “The Kings of the Grail,” making their case. The onyx chalice, they explained, was concealed within another antique vessel known as the Chalice of Doña Urruca, which is located in León’s basilica of

This week, the United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is releasing its latest report, the “Working Group II Contribution to the Fifth Assessment Report.” Like its past reports, this one predicts apocalyptic consequences if mankind fails to give the UN the power to tax and regulate fossil fuels and subsidize and mandate the use of alternative fuels. But happily, an international group of scientists I have been privileged to work with has conducted an independent review of IPCC’s past and new reports, along with the climate science they deliberately exclude or misrepresent.

In his opening statement during highly anticipated testimony Wednesday on Benghazi, former CIA deputy director Michael Morell claimed to be an intelligence professional who was willing to lay out the facts -- no matter how damaging. "I take very seriously the allegations about how the CIA in general and about how I in particular handled the analysis and the talking points," Morell told the House Intelligence Committee, in his first public testimony on the Benghazi attacks. "The ethical code under which intelligence officers carry out their responsibilities calls for total objectivity." But Morell´s own testimony would appear to undercut that

As part of Morell´s testimony on Wednesday, the former acting and deputy CIA director acknowledged that he overruled the guidance of the top CIA officer in Libya at the time. That official told Morell the attack was not an "escalation of protests," but Morell said he had to weigh that against analysts who concluded the opposite. He ultimately went

A driver who travelled 15,000 miles in a year would pay about $75. "Basically you pay per the mile. Do you think members of Congress are overpaid or underpaid? Most likely you’d go with the former, but Democratic congressman Jim Moran argues it’s actually the latter. In an interview with CQ Roll Call, Moran says, “I think the American people should know that the members of Congress are underpaid.” The House recently took up a bill to freeze members’ paychecks, placing another halt on the annual cost-of-living pay increases they would normally get and keeping annual salary at $174,000.
