VATICAN CITY - Pope Francis, celebrating his first Christmas as leader of the world´s 1.2 billion Roman Catholics, on Tuesday urged people to shun pride and selfishness and open up their hearts to God and their fellow man. Francis, who last March became the first non-European pope in 1,300 years, celebrated a solemn Christmas Eve Mass for some 10,000 people in a packed St. Peter´s Basilica as hundreds of others watched on mega-screens in the square outside. [snip] Francis delivered a short homily that was as simple as his white vestments: Man can choose between darkness and light.

Obamacare May Make It

Obamacare was drafted so poorly that residents in America´s territories like the Northern Mariana Islands and Guam may literally be unable to purchase health insurance on the private market next year, even if they are healthy and want to voluntarily do so. Though Obamacare requires insurance companies in the territories to accept all applicants regardless of preexisting conditions, the law "does not mandate that all territorial residents buy plans nor does it provide subsidies to make coverage more affordable--as it does in the 50 states and the District of Columbia." The Washington Post simply noted that "this is, to put it

Larry Klayman, the former Reagan administration prosecutor who won a preliminary injunction Dec. 16 against the government´s collection of all American phone records, says the White House´s surveillance review panel should be ignored. The five-member panel released a 303-page report Dec. 18 containing 46 recommended changes to intelligence practices. "It´s a ruse," Klayman tells U.S. News. "This is an age-old government practice: When caught with their hand in the cookie jar, they come up with a ´solution.´" The practice is somewhat similar to advocating a law outlawing murder after killing someone, he says. Klayman expects Department of Justice attorneys to

In what has been described as the "first scandal of the de Blasio administration," Lis Smith, a former Obama campaign aide and current spokeswoman for New York City mayor-elect Bill de Blasio´s transition, is reportedly dating disgraced and still-married former New York Governor Eliot Spitzer. According to a report in the New York Daily News, Smith, who had worked for Spitzer´s failed campaign for comptroller, has been in a relationship with the "hooker-scandal-disgraced ex-governor who’s been living apart from his wife." Spitzer is 56 and Smith is 31. “I have tremendous respect for Lis as a professional, and I also

As the Obama administration scrambles to corral individuals into Obamacare before today’s deadline, experts worry that first-time health insurance buyers may be in for a rude awakening once they understand the conditions and terminology contained in their policies. A recent academic study published in the Journal of Health Economics found that just 14% of individuals who have health coverage could correctly answer all four of four basic questions about health insurance, including understanding what a “deductible” and “copay” are. If comprehension figures are that low for the insured, analysts worry what that portends for the

Al-Qaeda Apologizes for Killing Muslims

Al Qaeda, slowly realizing that its indiscriminate murder of civilians is counterproductive if the victims happen to be Muslims, apologized in a video for a hospital attack in Sanaa, Yemen that killed dozens of people on December 5. Qassim Al-Raimi, the head of al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, released a video on Sunday in which he admitted that the attack was not meant to kill people in the hospital or the mosque that are part of the Yemeni Ministry of Defense compound. He asserted the cause was one al Qaeda fighter gone astray, saying, "We confess to this mistake

New York — The New York Police Department says a man and a child have died after plummeting from a midtown Manhattan building. Authorities said they received an emergency call reporting two jumpers from the 52-floor building around noon Sunday. Officers found a 30-year-old man and a 3-year-old child on the ground when they arrived. Police said the man was pronounced dead at the scene and the child was pronounced dead at a local hospital. The circumstances of the fall were unclear. Authorities were investigating. The address is a rental building listed as South Park Tower. The building is close to Columbus Circle,

An organization of business owners, tradesmen, and citizens of Waterbury, Connecticut have volunteered their time and talents to present a Christmas gift to their community: a 16-ton, 52-foot tall illuminated cross. The cross, which was put into place on Friday, replaces a similar one that rose high above the Holy Land U.S.A. religious attraction, which closed in 1984, and served as a landmark to motorists on Interstate 84. According to the Hartford Courant, construction crews have worked feverishly to complete assembling the pieces of the cross and move them into position on Pine Hill for Sunday’s 6:00 p.m. lighting ceremony.

WASHINGTON — The Obama administration moved late Friday to prevent a federal judge in California from ruling on the constitutionality of warrantless surveillance programs authorized during the Bush administration, telling a court that recent disclosures about National Security Agency spying were not enough to undermine its claim that litigating the case would jeopardize state secrets. In a set of filings in the two long-running cases in the Northern District of California, the government acknowledged for the first time that the N.S.A. started systematically collecting data about Americans’ emails and phone calls in 2001, alongside its program of wiretapping certain calls

While the Japanese were celebrating the bombing of Pearl Harbor in December of 1941, the mastermind of that attack, Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto, had a sobering message for his countrymen. "We have awakened a sleeping giant," he said. Even before the war began, the admiral had warned his emperor that Japan would enjoy early victories in any war with the United States, but that winning streak would last only six months to a year, after which American industrial might would inevitably overwhelm the small island nation. He was right. For the first few months of World War II, the Japanese war machine steamrolled

At the heart of the Duck Dynasty controversy is a modern paradox: those who most loudly celebrate the gay lifestyle seem to go into a Victorian swoon whenever anyone even obliquely mentions actual gay sex practices such as anal sex. As we watch the corporate clusterduck swirl around the alleged wrongs of reality TV star Phil Robertson concerning homosexuality, it may be instructive to take a step back. Image control has been crucial to gay activists. In 1980 Hollywood produced, Cruising, a big budget film that showed the seamier side of gay life. It got pretty good reviews because it

As far as one music critic is concerned, that’s all you needed to know about country music lyrics in 2013. In its rush to pass a budget deal, Congress voted to slice the benefits of veterans, even those who retire after suffering injuries while serving their country. This unconscionable sneak attack on former members of the armed services was evidently inserted into the legislation by GOP House Budget Chairman Paul Ryan during talks with lead Democratic negotiator, Sen. Patty Murray. He ought to be ashamed. The provision would cut veterans’ cost of living adjustments beginning in 2015 by $600 million a year — less than one-tenth of 1% of the $630 billion Pentagon budget. But the pain would be real. What a depressing presidency Barack Obama has wrought. Waltzing into office five years ago with the media’s shameless aid on a high-school-style campaign pledge of “Hope and Change,” the former community organizer from Chicago spent his last press conference of the year apologizing for everything he’s done wrong — then announcing he’s “eager to skip town” to Hawaii for “a couple days of sleep and sun.” Well, 17, but who’s counting. One truly has to wonder how the vaunted White House staff of advisers and sycophants came up with the battle plan for Friday’s presser, the last of a terrible year:

The Bipartisan Budget Act that Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., and I drafted will soon become law. We think it´s a small step toward fiscal discipline in Washington. The non-partisan Congressional Budget Office estimates the bill will reduce the deficit over the next ten years by over $20 billion. And unlike current law, it will provide much-needed relief to our already strained defense budget. One part of the bill has become particularly controversial: the reduction in cost-of-living adjustments (COLAs) for working-age military retirees. The federal government has no greater obligation than to keep the American people safe and we must take

This evening 60 Minutes did yet another puff piece on a member of the Obama Administration. This time it was National Security Adviser Susan Rice’s turn. However, the most egregious part of the segment concerned Benghazi. When discussing Rice’s infamous appearances (when she was then U.S. Ambassador to the UN) on five Sunday talk shows on September 16, 2012 in which she claimed that the attacks on Benghazi were

House Budget Committee chairman Rep. These are only a few among a

Some Democrats, particularly in the Senate, are worried about facing voters having backed the health law, which has seen a rocky rollout and is costing millions of Americans their health plans — even as it is aided millions of others to sign up or get on their parents’ plans. “It’s worth the trouble, it’s
