Van Susteren Tells Palin Why Duck
Dynasty Controversy Has Nothing
to Do with Free Speech

Mediaite, by Matt Wilstein

Original Article

Posted By:Drive, 12/23/2013 11:13:15 PM

Sarah Palin was one of the first conservative voices to defend Duck Dynasty patriarch Phil Robertson’s controversial comments about homosexual sex. In a Facebook post, Palin declared that “free speech is an endangered species.” Monday night on Fox News, Greta Van Susteren attempted to explain why invoking the First Amendment in this case does not actually make any sense. Palin said she would leave it to the lawyers to decide whether it’s a “free speech rule of law or not,” and would herself focus on the larger question of “whether we’re allowed to express our personal opinions without threats of

In fact, the people who are threatening and vilifying those that they disagree with are part and parcel of the political class that is in control of our government (country) today.

In addition, the mechanism that they use is the press, which is also part and parcel of the current government. The fact that there is no bolted-together connection between the government and the abuse of American citizens right to free speech means nothing. The results are obvious.

I´ll agree that it does not have anything to do with FIRST AMENDMENT protected speech, but it certainly does affect free speech as a basic tenet of American society. It really is a free market issue.

Mediaite´s title is horrendously misleading. They´re making it out to be "Van Susteren slaps down stupid Palin because this obviously has nothing to do with freedom of speech". In reality, it is "Van Susteren suggests there isn´t much of a legal freedom of speech case to be had; Palin agrees and clarifies that she will leave the legal aspect to the lawyers while she is focusing on lost freedom of speech in the sense that leftists try to muzzle opponents by getting them fired for speaking up." That just doesn´t have nearly enough controversy or making Palin out as an idiot for Mediaite, though.

#4, a reading of Romans 1:18-32 in the New Testament of the Holy Bible might help you to recognize what Phil Robertson was paraphrasing when he said those things.

Phil Robertson believes the Holy Bible is the infallible, inspired word of Almighty God - God breathed. Look around at what is happening in this country. It´s difficult not to see the truth of those words.

Why did Phil ever talk to GQ... with A&E there?

It is not a First Amendment free speech issue, as all lawyers hasten to point out, but it is an issue of speaking FREELY, which Americans have come to believe is also their birthright. No one has a right to a lifetime free from ever hearing something they oppose or dislike.

Mark Steyn´s column covers this beautifully (as only Mark Steyn can). It´s a concerted effort to rob someone of their right to speak their opinion. It is not governmental and therefore not a 1st Amendment issue, but it is a free speech issue.

That (#4) certainly is not true of every gay person, but it certainly is true of those who style themselves as "leaders of the gay community". GLAAD is an excellent example of the latter.

They are most assuredly filled with anger and hatred, and apply themselves to invent new ways to do evil.

If A&E had fired a black person for saying something about whites, we would have seen a law suit filed by the ACLU the next day claiming that person´s civil rights had been denied. Every media outlet, along with many on this site claiming no civil right stand for Robertson, would have been applauding the suit.

#4 is right about corporate America, & I hope we start to see some pushback on that in the near future.

Revelation describes a time when no one will be able to buy or sell unless they have the mark of the beast. That used to sound pretty far-fetched to me, but I can now easily imagine a time in the near future when people who express Biblical opinions will not be allowed to earn a living, & thus will have to live off the land or rely on charity in order to survive.

#4 is mistaken about the context, or is purposely repeating the media narrative.

The phrases Phil was quoting from the Bible offer a list of sins that "the unrighteous" commit. Sodomy is just one on the list.

It is absolutely a free speech issue! And at the same time, it´s quite obvious that it´s not a First Amendment issue. Anyone who only points out the latter without recognizing the broader picture is either truly stupid, deliberately disingenuous, or trying to be cute,.
In reference to #4, they´ve proven it over and over again - very loudly and very clearly. This is just the example du jour.

Greta, it´s not supposed to be about free speech, which concerns what the govt can do and not what private enterprise can do.

But let´s get real. The alphabet media are all on the side of Big Govt and in a sense have more power than even Big Govt. They act as an extension of Big Govt. You know this.

Now that it´s been pointed out in plain language, perhaps you can enlighten the world on this specific point rather than the point you chose to enlighten us on. Most of us already knew that point. What we don´t know is where the line gets drawn when private actors act at the behest of govt to squelch free speech.

Or do we just keep on pretending that the alphabet media are entirely independent of govt speech censors? Real world here, Greta. Not pretend world, please.

There’s something that makes the current Supreme Court different from some of its recent predecessors. The justices got religion. Or at least they seem more open about their faith, appearing before devout audiences and talking more about how religion shaped their lives or guides them now. As the court this week weighs religious conviction vs. legal obligation in the latest challenge to the Affordable Care Act, those who study the court say the change is hard to quantify but easy to notice. Darren Aronofsky wrestles one of scripture´s most primal stories to the ground and extracts something vital and audacious, while also pushing some aggressive environmentalism, in Noah. Whereas for a century most Hollywood filmmakers have tread carefully and respectfully when tackling biblical topics in big-budget epics aimed at a mass audience, Aronofsky has been daring, digging deep to develop a bold interpretation of a tale which, in the original, offers a lot of room for speculation and invention.
