Good article. I love puzzles, particularly puzzles that look at first like they should have a simple solution, but prove surprisingly difficult or even impossible to solve.

As the comments in the story point out, most of these aren´t mysteries. DM prints some great stories the US media ignores, and it can have some amazing photos, but it also has a tabloid air to it at times.

During WWII our servicemen in the South Pacific would sometimes report odd phenomena, such as unusual lights, sounds, and weather events.
In one story I heard about sailors were on a remote island and observed the flickering lights of a fantastic naval battle far out at sea. The next day they found out there were no ships anywhere nearby. Tall tales or an unexplainable event?

Our old family ranch in Terrell County is in the usual migration path for the monarchs. Sometimes, every few years, a huge group will spend the night next to a tree-lined pond. It´s a sight to see those trees completely covered with folded-winged monarchs. It´s a myth that the monarchs fly nonstop to and from their winter quarters. I can tell you they spend the nights on places like high-desert ranches.

Search and rescue crews from several countries were scrambling Saturday to locate a Malaysia Airlines plane with 239 people aboard, including three Americans, that disappeared after losing contact with air traffic control on its way from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing. The airline said the Boeing 777-200 "lost contact" with Subang Air Traffic Control at 2:40 a.m., two hours into the flight. The plane had been expected to land in Beijing at 6:30 a.m. Saturday. China´s state-run news agency Xinhua reported the plane was lost in airspace controlled by Vietnam, and never made contact with Chinese air traffic controllers. There have

The Navy’s first laser weapon ready for prime time. The Laser Weapon System (LaWS), which will be used to protect vessels from drones and other small aircraft, will be deployed this summer with the USS Ponce, the technology website Ars Technica reported. LaWS accomplishes its task by causing a drone’s sensors to malfunction or, with enough energy, bursting it into flames. “The effects are scalable,” Navy Capt. Mike Ziv, the Naval Sea Systems Command’s program manager for directed energy and electric weapons, told Armed With Science, a Department of Defense blog. “In some cases [the weapon’s effects are] reversible, and in

A big new report on millennials was released today by the Pew Research Center, covering a lot of the same stuff we’re always hearing about this oft-discussed generation. Millennials are diverse, they’re not making a lot of money and they’re really into this Internet I keep hearing so much about. Still, there were some interesting takeaways! Here are four things that caught my attention. (Take note: The report focuses on people between ages 18 and 33, leaving out the teenagers who still technically count as millennials.) 1. People Are Not To Be Trusted …My generation does not seem to think

MIAMI — President Barack Obama campaigned for better access to higher education Friday during a visit to a Miami-Dade high school he says should be a model for the rest of the country. The president and first lady helicoptered into Coral Reef Senior High in the early afternoon, where they talked college, careers and investment with a classroom of seniors before electrifying a gymnasium with hundreds of screaming upperclassmen seated to the ceiling in bleachers. "We heard great things about your school," Obama said, barely audible over the roar. "We wanted to come down here and see what was going

Most of America´s young adults are single, don´t go to church and while half say they have no loyalty to a political party, when pushed they tend to swing further left politically than those before them. A new Pew Research Center survey out Friday showed that half of America´s young adults, ages 18 to 33, consider themselves political independents, identifying with neither party. But asked which way they lean politically, half of the so-called millennials say they lean toward the Democratic Party, the highest share for any age group over the last decade. What’s been said of confession — that it is good for one’s soul but bad for one’s reputation — can also be true of testifying to Congress, so Lois Lerner has chosen to stay silent. Hers, however, is an eloquent silence. The most intrusive and potentially most punitive federal agency has been politicized; the IRS has become an appendage of Barack Obama’s party. Furthermore, congruent with exhortations from some congressional Democrats, it is intensifying its efforts to suffocate groups critical of progressives, by delaying what once was the swift, routine granting of tax-exempt status. So, the IRS, far from repenting

A pair of Long Island brothers cooked up millions of dollars worth of knockoff health products like Vaseline, baby oil, ChapStick and Vicks VapoRub — and the items ended up on store shelves as the real thing. The sophisticated operation — described as the largest-ever uncovered in the US — had five manufacturing facilities that pumped out the bogus concoctions, which included potentially dangerous versions of the popular, over-the-counter products. Investigators raided locations in Franklin Square, Oceanside, Freeport and Valley Stream Thursday and needed four tractor-trailer trucks to haul off fake products worth more than $2 million, authorities said. “Health and beauty products

PHOENIX -- Federal investigators concluded there was sufficient evidence to bring charges against public officials during their years-long abuse-of-power investigation targeting Maricopa County law-enforcement agencies, according to heavily redacted records obtained by The Arizona Republic. The records indicate that FBI agents found probable cause to recommend felony counts of obstructing criminal investigations of prosecutions, theft by threats, tampering with witnesses, perjury and theft by extortion. Ultimately, federal prosecutors in August 2012 closed the three-year FBI criminal investigation and grand-jury probe into Sheriff Joe Arpaio, former County Attorney Andrew Thomas and their top deputies, saying there would be no indictments due

Because of “sequestration and furloughs” the number of individuals audited by the Internal Revenue Service fell by 80,000 in fiscal 2013 and the number of businesses audited fell by 9,000, according to the IRS’s Budget in Brief released this week. “As a result of the impacts of sequestration and furloughs, the IRS delivered key enforcement programs below 2012 levels,” said the budget document. “Total individual audits fell 5 percent from 1.48 million to 1.40 million, while audits of high income individuals declined from 179,000 to 172,000. So, Lois Lerner still won´t talk about her role in the illegal targeting and harassment by the IRS of conservative and Tea Party groups seeking 501(c)(4) tax exemptions. Lerner appeared for a second time Wednesday before the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform and claimed her Fifth Amendment right not to incriminate herself. It isn´t hard to figure out why Lerner´s lips are sealed. First, she knows the House of Representatives can cite her for contempt of Congress, but Attorney General Eric Holder would decide whether she is prosecuted on that charge. McCain said he spoke to Cruz about the comments and it was “cordial” but he took specific offense at the remarks concerning Dole. “He can say what he wants to about me and he can say anything he wants to about Mitt,” McCain said,

Via Matt Lewis, here’s Maverick once again demonstrating that “cordial relationship” in politico-speak means “two people who can’t publicly admit to hating each other but obviously do.” And it’s a cheap shot. Cruz’s point yesterday at CPAC was that Dole, McCain, and Romney lost because they weren’t conservative enough. That’s not because they’re gutless — he said specifically that they were “good” and “decent” men — but because they’re not committed, full-throated ideologues, even less so when they’re fighting for purple states in a national election. We can debate whether that’s true but there’s nothing offensive in raising the subject.
