Lt Gov: "Duck Dynasty"

Louisiana´s lieutenant governor says the "Duck Dynasty" reality TV show is important to state tourism — and he could help connect the Robertson family with new producers if they cannot reach agreement with the A&E network. The network suspended patriarch Phil Robertson last week for telling GQ magazine that gays are sinners akin to adulterers and swindlers. "I´m sure a lot of people found the comments offensive. There´s no question about that," Lt. Governor Jay Dardenne said Sunday. "The point is he has an opinion and has a set of beliefs and is entitled to those without jeopardizing what has become an

The DD marathon viewership was, apparently, way down. Saturday viewership was reportedly down 71%, I have not seen any figures for Sunday night.

Paul Ryan to deliver critique

Washington Post, by Robert Costa    Original Article

"A full stomach — and an empty soul." That scathing synopsis of the Democrats´ pitch will be the crux of Paul Ryan´s message to the Conservative Political Action Conference on Thursday, when the Wisconsin Republican addresses activists. Ryan´s critique, even if delivered in his usual aw-shucks style, will probably stir talk of a possible presidential bid. Politicians looking only to chair the Ways and Means Committee rarely toss out such red meat. In the speech, which the Post obtained late Wednesday, Ryan also urges Republican to craft a conservative reform agenda, and talks up the legacy of his mentor, Jack Kemp, the late

As Obama Delays Obamacare Again,

As Scott noted a little while ago, the Obama administration has again pushed back the deadline for individual and small group policies to comply with Obamacare’s requirements. They are doing this, obviously, because they are trying to put off the political fallout when millions of Americans lose the coverage they had, and find that coverage under Obamacare will be more expensive and/or more limited. Which gives a special resonance to the story of Julie Boonstra. Mrs. Boonstra, as you likely recall, is a Michigan resident who suffers from leukemia. She filmed a television ad for Americans For Prosperity in which she

How the Ukraine crisis ends

Public discussion on Ukraine is all about confrontation. But do we know where we are going? In my life, I have seen four wars begun with great enthusiasm and public support, all of which we did not know how to end and from three of which we withdrew unilaterally. The test of policy is how it ends, not how it begins. Far too often the Ukrainian issue is posed as a showdown: whether Ukraine joins the East or the West. But if Ukraine is to survive and thrive, it must not be either side’s outpost against the other — it should

Putin Has Won on Ukraine: Is He

Vladimir Putin has won. Of the most likely outcomes in Ukraine, the one most perplexing to the United States and most damaging to President Obama´s legacy is the status quo. Putin could accept Obama´s diplomatic "off ramp:" shift his troops back to their Crimea bases, permit international monitors, and open relations with the interim government. He also could escalate, pushing troops into eastern Ukraine. But he has little incentive to either pull back or push forward, because the current state of affairs favors Putin in two ways. First, his troops are deployed throughout Crimea, a boon to his expansionist domestic politics and an

FORT WORTH, Texas — George P. Bush took the first step toward continuing his family´s political dynasty Tuesday, shaking off an under-funded primary challenger and securing the Republican nomination for the little-known but powerful post of Texas land commissioner. The 37-year-old Fort Worth attorney is the grandson of former President George H.W. Bush, nephew of former President and Texas Gov. George W. Bush, and son of ex-Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, who is frequently mentioned as a possible GOP White House hopeful in 2016. He´s also a Spanish speaker whose mother Columba was born in Mexico and who Republican leaders statewide long have

President Barack Obama does not see Vladimir Putin as "unhinged" and believes the Russian leader can be coaxed into a deal to withdraw troops and end the Ukrainian crisis, the White House said last night. Hours after Mr Putin made a combative appearance in Moscow where he denied Russian troops were in Crimea but left open the possibility of war with Ukraine, the US said it still believed it was possible to reach a compromise with the Russian president. "We may be able to deescalate over the next several days and weeks, but it’s a serious situation and we’re spending a lot

Mike McQueary, the former Penn State quarterback and Nittany Lions assistant football coach who was a key prosecution witness in Jerry Sandusky’s criminal trial, confided to players that he was a victim of sexual abuse, according to a new ESPN The Magazine report. According to the report, it was during a meeting with PSU football receivers and tight ends on Nov. 7, 2011 — three days after prosecutors released a damning grand jury presentment outlining Sandusky’s sexual abuse of eight boys over a 15-year period — that the then-Nittany Lions receivers coach, McQueary, told the players that he too had been

It remains one of Wall Street’s most puzzling mysteries: What exactly did JPMorgan Chase bankers know about Bernard L. Madoff’s Ponzi scheme? A newly obtained government document explains why — five years after Mr. Madoff’s arrest spotlighted his ties to JPMorgan and later led the bank to reach a $2 billion settlement with federal authorities — the picture is still so clouded. The document, obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request, reveals a behind-the-scenes dispute that tested the limits of JPMorgan’s legal rights and raised alarming yet unsubstantiated accusations of perjury at the bank. More broadly, the document highlights the legal

In a post last week, I wrote that near the end of his autobiography, the great French journalist and intellectual Raymond Aron, in a chapter on the tenure of Secretary of State Kissinger, wrote, “For a half century, I have limited my freedom of criticism by asking the question; in his place, what would I do?” Aron’s overall point is that governing is harder than criticizing those attempting to govern and therefore ought to temper a bit one’s denunciations of those in power. This applies to those of us who are critics of President Obama. But this, too, needs to be said.

As much as you may loathe tax season, there are people who rejoice during this time of year. They see it as prime time for picking people to victimize. Unscrupulous folks know taxpayers are eager to get a large refund. They love the complexity of the tax code, which provides them the opportunity to trick people into letting down their guard. Every year, the Internal Revenue Service highlights the lowdown and dirty by putting out its list of top 12 tax scams. “Scams can be sophisticated and take many different forms,” said IRS Commissioner John Koskinen. “We urge people to protect themselves

Via Matt Lewis, here’s Maverick once again demonstrating that “cordial relationship” in politico-speak means “two people who can’t publicly admit to hating each other but obviously do.” And it’s a cheap shot. Cruz’s point yesterday at CPAC was that Dole, McCain, and Romney lost because they weren’t conservative enough. That’s not because they’re gutless — he said specifically that they were “good” and “decent” men — but because they’re not committed, full-throated ideologues, even less so when they’re fighting for purple states in a national election. We can debate whether that’s true but there’s nothing offensive in raising the subject.

NATIONAL HARBOR, Md.—Rand Paul handily won the presidential straw poll at the Conservative Political Action Conference Saturday, one gauge of the Republican base’s mood less than two years before the 2016 primary season kicks off. The Kentucky senator received 31 percent, far ahead of second place Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), who received 11 percent. Neurosurgeon Ben Carson finished third with 9 percent, ahead of New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, who received 8 percent. The announcement came at the end of the group’s annual three-day confab. Organizers said that 2,459 attendees voted on computer kiosks.

What’s been said of confession — that it is good for one’s soul but bad for one’s reputation — can also be true of testifying to Congress, so Lois Lerner has chosen to stay silent. Hers, however, is an eloquent silence. The most intrusive and potentially most punitive federal agency has been politicized; the IRS has become an appendage of Barack Obama’s party. Furthermore, congruent with exhortations from some congressional Democrats, it is intensifying its efforts to suffocate groups critical of progressives, by delaying what once was the swift, routine granting of tax-exempt status. So, the IRS, far from repenting

One of the most seismic changes in American politics over the last decade has been the emergence of a sharp generational split among the electorate. The Democratic Party owes its success in the last two presidential elections almost entirely to overwhelming support among the very young, which has overcome continued conservatism among older voters. The Pew Research Institute has dominated the field of exploring the ideological cleavages among different generations. And its latest survey shows again how the liberalism of the youngest voting cohort, millennials, remains firm, and likely to continue to recast the electorate. A few charts from the survey

Barack Obama´s parents were "married in name only," according to David Maraniss´s 2012 Barack Obama: The Story. But since definitions of an "in name only" marriage vary, such as "a marriage of convenience" or "a sexless marriage," and Maraniss failed to explain his claim, it is unclear what he was implying. Therefore, Obama´s oft-told nativity story must be searched for the full implications of Obama´s parents´ "in name only" marriage. The 2012 Republican presidential nominee has invited his debate prep advisers and senior campaign aides to his mountaintop chalet in Park City, Utah, for a weekend of skiing later this month, according to two people close to Romney. The reunion of Romney´s political brain trust comes amid a burst of positive buzz about the former Massachusetts governor -- from favorable reviews of "MITT," the Netflix documentary about his campaigns, to chatter among some powerful GOP donors about another Romney presidential campaign in 2016.

Kuala Lumpur - A Malaysia Airlines flight carrying 227 passengers and 12 crew crashed in the South China Sea on Saturday, Vietnamese state media said, quoting a senior naval official. The Boeing 777-200ER flight from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing had been missing for hours when Vietnam´s Tuoi Tre news quoted Admiral Ngo Van Phat as saying he had asked boats from an island off south Vietnam to rush to the crash site. If the report is confirmed, it would mark the U.S.-built airliner´s deadliest crash since entering service 19 years ago. Malaysia Airlines had yet to confirm that the aircraft had crashed.
