Iran and Obama´s
´Lie of the Year´

Washington Examiner, by Melanie Sturm

Unable to ignore millions of cancellation letters and a rare presidential apology, fact-checkers at PolitiFact and the Washington Post designated “If you like your health care plan, you can keep it” as 2013´s “Lie of the Year.” Repelled by Obamacare´s deceptive sales tactics, Americans dread its fallout, but know our system allows us to think again. And the lie was planned to be delivered on day 1! Hilarycare failed at the moment it was admitted that people WOULD be forced to change their health care. . . that was NOT going to happen with O´care! Pretence of this´ being a mere mistake is laughable! It was planned and deliberate!

´Presidential apology´? Did I miss something? I heard of Obama say something to the affect of ´I am sorry some of you took me at my word, but you should have known that I don´t mean what I say.´. I wouldn´t call that an apology.

Since Teddy Roosevelt counseled, “Speak softly and carry a big stick,” U.S. presidents have mostly followed his advice, cautioning adversaries to resolve conflicts peacefully or suffer consequences. Even President Carter brandished America´s big stick upon learning that bad things happen when you´re not respected, prompting him to reconsider deterrence, given “the Soviets´ ultimate goals.” But today, after unilaterally “resetting” relations with repressive regimes, including Iran andRussia -- whose Ukraine incursion is “the gravest threat to European security and stability since the end of the Cold War,” proclaimed NATO´s chief -- America´s posture is more akin to “speak loudly and carry a toothpick.”

Last month, as Ukrainian émigré-turned-tech tycoon Jan Koum prepared to cash a multibillion-dollar check from Facebook -- acquirer of his startup WhatsApp -- then-Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych was checking out of the Gatsby-esque estate where he´d cached his stolen plunder. That the two Ukrainians derived their riches under diametrically opposed systems -- free enterprise versus banana republic -- illustrates why all income inequalities are not created equal. Most don´t resent the rich -- only the undeservedly rich -- as a recent Venezuelan protest sign conveyed: “These Castro-Chavistas speak like Marx,

Vladimir Putin seized Ukraine´s Crimean peninsula on Thursday, and Barack Obama delivered a short statement about it on Friday. The former tells us nothing we didn´t know already about Russia´s strongman. The latter tells us everything we need to know about a weak president´s feckless foreign policy. Let´s take a look at what Mr. Obama had to say: "I also spoke several days ago with President Putin, and my administration has been in daily contact with Russian officials." OK, but why? What´s the point of talking if you won´t even make use of what´s said? On Oct. 18, 1962, Soviet

A bipartisan group of law professors, including both supporters and opponents of same-sex marriage, has sent Arizona governor Jan Brewer a letter explaining the religious freedom bill now sitting on her desk has been "egregiously misreprented" by its critics. The law professors write (my emphasis in bold): SB1062, which amends Arizona’s Religious Freedom Restoration Act, is on your desk for signature. The bill has been egregiously misrepresented by many of its critics. We write because we believe that you should make your decision on the basis of accurate information. Some of us are Republicans; some of us are Democrats.

“Life’s greatest happiness,” Victor Hugo wrote, “is to be convinced we are loved.” But as most experienced couples know, love-induced happiness is a year-round triumph, not the outcome of a singular, mass-marketed Valentine´s celebration - the one Jay Leno calls “Extortion Day.” But men ignore this expectation-filled Hallmark holiday at their peril, which is why it’s become a $16 billion industry. More than heart-shaped bling, women savor attention — a lesson also noted by politicians. Just as women should be wary of transient Romeos, they must think again about politicians who whisper sweet nothings into their ears, over-promising before an election

The weirdest thing about John Kerry´s weekend speech on climate-change—other than the fact that this is the same guy who in 1997 voted to forbid the U.S. from signing the Kyoto Protocol—is that it begins by quoting something Maurice Strong said at the U.N.´s 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro: "Every bit of evidence I´ve seen persuades me that we are on a course leading to tragedy." Maurice who? Mr. Strong, a former oil executive from Canada (he was Pierre Trudeau´s pick to run state-owned Petro-Canada in the mid-1970s), was for many years the U.N.´s ultimate mandarin.

Last week a biochemist announced that marijuana “is no worse than alcohol.” OK, he’s not exactly a biochemist, but he does have some expertise on the subject. As a teenager in an exclusive private school in Hawaii, he was a member of a “club” called the Choom Gang. They had a narrow charter: It was to get high smoking marijuana every day. “Barry,” as he was then called, excelled. President Barack Obama, as he is now called, still publicly jokes and brags about his teenage marijuana habit. But the president of the United States of America promises that he does

“It’s hard to be humble,” Muhammad Ali rationalized, “when you’re as great as I am.” In Sunday’s contest between No. 1s, the Super Bowl’s two most visible faces — Bronco Peyton Manning and Seahawk Richard Sherman — are case studies of Ali’s theory. Manning is football’s undisputed heavyweight champion, whose aww-shucks humility belies — and explains — his unrivaled ownership of five NFL MVP awards. Quick to credit his teammates, even after a seven-touchdown performance, the 13-time Pro Bowler and comeback king leaves it to others to laud his game. With his legacy on the line in his third Super Bowl, Manning is

As a binge-TV watcher, I’ve relished devouring serial dramas in advertising-free gulps. But “Breaking Bad” — the story about a cancer-stricken chemistry teacher turned clandestine meth-cooking badass – didn’t appeal. Then Anthony Hopkins declared it an “epic work” with “the best actors I’ve ever seen.” Midway through season two, I understand why Walter White is heroic. As men increasingly check out of work, marriage, and fatherhood, it’s hard not to root for a man fiercely determined to secure his family’s future before dying – despite his morally abhorrent methods. That there are dramatically fewer men willing and able to safeguard

The economy has been stuck in a ditch for more than six years, and our national debt has exploded to unmanageable proportions. We have no coherent policy for dealing with conflicts in the Middle East, Africa or the Korean Peninsula. And scandals have erupted in the Internal Revenue Service, the State Department and the Justice Department. Moreover, the three things the president said he would focus on the most in his second term — jobs, immigration reform and global warming — get barely a mention by the White House. President Obama a few months ago signed a bill to increase taxes by $600 billion. The title of the bill is the American Taxpayer Relief Act. As for the fourth word of that title, if you’re Obama, apparently you spell “relief” as follows: T-A-X-I-N-C-R-E-A-S-E. The president thereby achieved his goal of transferring more money away from the people who earned it with their labor over a lifetime and into the hands of people who earned it with their votes in November. As he relieved the former of the burden of their money, he thanked them: “I just want to thank

Many Americans have been watching with great consternation the ongoing struggle between the Federal Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and the U.S. Marshals against Cliven Bundy and his family. There are no signs of either side relinquishing their position. Many onlookers have been informed that this dispute is over protecting the desert tortoise. But it is nothing of the sort. In fact, the reality of the dispute goes far underneath what is being talked about. The more appropriate source of the dispute is ground water as well as surface water -- this is a war over water. The son of the Nevada rancher locked in an increasingly tense land dispute with the federal government, says their cowboys managed to break a blockade and retrieve around 30 head of cattle. Federal agents swooped on Tuesday after Cliven Bundy, dubbed the last remaining rancher in southern Nevada, refused to remove his herd of 900 cows from land he claims has been in his family since 1870. The heavily-armed federal agents, equipped with eight helicopters and backed-up by snipers, surrounded the Bundy ranch after the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) attained a federal court order to confiscate the family´s herd. Following the massacre of grammar-school children in Newtown, Conn., in December 2012, high-powered weapons have been used to kill innocent victims in more senseless public incidents. Those killings, however, are only a fragment of the total harm caused by the misuse of firearms. Each year, more than 30,000 people die in the United States in firearm-related incidents. Many of those deaths involve handguns. The adoption of rules that will lessen the number of those incidents should be a matter of primary concern to both federal and state legislators. Legislatures are in a far better position than judges to assess the

Recently elected Democratic Virginia Gov. Nearly a year into the IRS scandal, we still don´t know exactly what happened—though we are finally getting an inkling. That´s thanks to the letter House Ways and Means Chairman Dave Camp sent this week to the Justice Department recommending a criminal probe of Lois Lerner. The average citizen might be dizzied by the torrent of confusing terms—BOLO lists, Tigta, 501(c)(4)—and the array of accusations that have made up this IRS investigation. Mr. Camp´s letter takes a step back to remind us why this matters, even as it provides compelling new information that goes to motive and method—and clarifies some of

Solar power has won the global argument. Photovoltaic energy is already so cheap that it competes with oil, diesel and liquefied natural gas in much of Asia without subsidies. Roughly 29pc of electricity capacity added in America last year came from solar, rising to 100pc even in Massachusetts and Vermont.[Snip] The technology is improving so fast--helped by the US military--that it has achieved a virtous circle. Michael Parker and Flora Chang, at Sanford Bernstein, say we entering a new order of "global energy deflation" that must ineluctably erode the viability of oil, gas and the fossil fuel nexus over time.

There is mainstream media-suppressed case history in Nevada the feds are desperately trying to keep under wraps. Chief Judge Robert C.
