HONOLULU— President Barack Obama and the vacationing first family momentarily skipped the beach in Hawaii on Sunday to take in a college basketball game. Obama, first lady Michelle Obama and daughters Sasha and Malia attended the Oregon State-Akron game Sunday at the Diamond Head Classic tournament in Honolulu. Oregon State is coached by Michelle Obama´s brother, Craig Robinson. The Obamas sat just behind the Oregon State bench, with the president sitting in between his wife and friend Bobby Titcomb. The Obamas drew a standing ovation and loud cheers as they walked in to the small arena at the University of Hawaii.

HONOLULU - President Barack Obama told Congress Sunday that he may take further military action to protect Americans in violence-plagued South Sudan. In a letter to Congress, Obama said that about 46 U.S. troops were deployed Saturday to help evacuate Americans. That´s in addition to another 45 troops deployed to reinforce the U.S. Embassy in Juba. Four U.S. troops were injured in the evacuation mission Saturday when gunfire hit three military planes. All four are in stable condition, the White House said. Obama is on his annual vacation in Hawaii, but he said in the letter to congressional leaders that

NEW YORK- The glitch-plagued rollout of President Barack Obama´s health care overhaul was the top news story of 2013, followed by the Boston Marathon bombing and the dramatic papal changeover at the Vatican, according to The Associated Press´ annual poll of U.S. editors and news directors. The saga of "Obamacare" - as the Affordable Care Act is widely known - received 45 first-place votes out of the 144 ballots cast for the top 10 stories. The marathon bombing received 29 first-place votes and the papal transition 21. Other strong contenders were the bitter partisan conflict in Congress and the leaks

Like the battle of Gettysburg, the fight over Duck Dynasty seems to have erupted partly by accident, and was occasioned by the Left’s outrunning its own supply lines in an attempt to take out a strategic Rightist redoubt — thus getting their heads handed to them. And over what? Words. Words uttered in the course of an interview — but because they touched on a Taboo Topic (raised by interviewer himself), have been used a pretext for a bad case of the “bigotry” vapors, and the attempted banishment of one of pop culture’s most beloved figures to outer purdah. So

Attempting to build his national profile, Al Sharpton "took up residence on the West Side (of Chicago) in November and began hosting ... (weekly) town halls as part of an effort to find solutions to the city’s outsize homicide rate among young black males." Rebel Pundit at Breitbart News reports that a Thursday meeting in the city´s Hyde Park area not far from President Obama´s Chicago home didn´t exactly turn out the way Sharpton would have liked. There was even talk of having "Tea Party" meetings "like Republicans do." Sharpton doesn´t need to worry too much, though, because Chicago´s establishment

Fox News host Greta van Susteren expressed dismay Sunday over President Barack Obama’s performance at a Friday press conference, calling it “pathetic.” “You just want to slit your throat almost, because it was so depressing,” she declared. Susteren visited ABC’s “This Week” to comment on the White House’s latest Obamacare rule change released earlier this week. But what started as a conversation on the healthcare law’s prospects soon turned into an attack on Obama’s messaging. “The president’s most powerful weapon as president is his ability to inspire — that’s his greatest strength,” Susteren began. “And then he comes out last

When I came to a short time later, I couldn’t see a thing. There was stinging agony in my face and throbbing in my head. I felt for my upper lip. It was almost severed from the rest of my face. With less than 24 hours to go until the critical Obamacare enrollment deadline, all eyes are on the Obama administration to see whether Democratic claims of a massive "Obamacare sign-up surge" will materialize. Tomorrow´s December 23rd deadline, which was extended an extra week due to the HealthCare.gov debacle, marks the near midpoint of Obamacare´s six-month enrollment period. The Obama administration says it needs to sign up 7,000,000 people to Obamacare by the March 31 deadline. Individuals wishing for health coverage to begin January 1 must be enrolled by tomorrow´s deadline; those wishing to avoid the government´s fine of $95 or

I think we can safely call Cracker Barrel’s response to the Phil Robertson scandal a clusterduck. For those sensible souls not following the saga as closely as I am: the Southern restaurant chain became the first major retailer to pull some Duck Dynasty products off its shelves on Saturday in response to cast member Robertson’s now-notorious anti-gay GQ interview. Cue a barrage of tweets, emails, and calls from Duck Dynasty fans to the powers that be at Cracker Barrel, not to mention threats of a boycott. WASHINGTON- President Barack Obama must be expecting a Christmas miracle. Otherwise, Obamacare will cause more people to lose health care insurance this year than to gain it. That’s why Obama is dismantling Obamacare, jettisoning whole chunks as he tries to save his own creation even as he cripples it and creates public chaos. Not relying on divine intervention, Obama has his whole team scrambling to change rules, to re-interpret and to re-define how everything is done and measured. Insurance companies complain that he’s causing utter havoc with his constant changes (usually outside his legal authority) that will make the already-high

The wrecking ball swung again toward the crumbling Obamacare edifice yesterday. Ironically, it continues to be the Obama administration that is operating the heavy machinery. Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius announced, in the form of a letter to Democratic senators, that Obamacare’s individual mandate tax will be waived in 2014 for persons who had their policies canceled in 2013 due to Obamacare. At this point, after months of on-the-fly pronouncements, delays, and exemptions (often announced, not coincidentally, in the days just before a major national holiday), perhaps nothing should surprise us anymore about Obamacare’s disastrous rollout. But yesterday’s announcement

Let´s get a few things straight about what Phil Robertson said that got him in trouble. Defenses of Robertson, the star of "Duck Dynasty" suspended for his remarks in an interview with GQ, have focused on the idea that he was just crudely expressing the sincere, Christian view that homosexuality is sinful. (Snip) Robertson´s defenders should read his comments again, because their defenses are off-point. If you´re defending Robertson, here´s what you´re defending: 1. Robertson thinks black Americans were treated just fine in the Jim Crow-era South, and that they were happy there. 2.Robertson thinks the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor

The chain has granted checkout workers in more than 700 stores permission to politely decline to serve customers for religious reasons. Instead, shoppers are being asked to wait to pay for certain items at a different till. The policy highlights a divide among the mainstream food retailers over whether religious staff should be excused from certain tasks. In contrast to M&S, Sainsbury´s has told Muslim staff that there is no reason why they cannot handle goods such as alcohol and

The Robertson family of "Duck Dynasty" fame has rallied around its patriarch, saying his controversial comments on homosexuality are "grounded in the teachings of the Bible." But Scripture is fiercely contested ground, and some experts say Phil Robertson misinterprets a key Bible verse. A&E, the network that broadcasts the hugely popular "Duck Dynasty" show, suspended Robertson for a now infamous interview with GQ magazine. In the article, Robertson, who became a born-again Christian in the 1970s after a prodigal youth, is asked to define "sin." Here´s what Robertson says: “Start with homosexual behavior and just morph out from there. Bestiality, sleeping around

When Barack Obama sings “Auld Lang Syne” on New Year’s Eve, he will have reason to think back, with a deep sense of nostalgia and not a small amount of regret, on the last time he sang the song. If he gets a lump in his throat as he recollects that glorious night one year ago, who would blame him? After all, he was riding about as high as a man can ride on New Year’s Eve 2012. There he was, almost literally the master of the universe — the canny victor of the 2012 election, having run what was
