Weak U.S. card security
made Target a juicy target

Associated Press, by Jonathan Fahey

Original Article

New York - The U.S. is the juiciest target for hackers hunting credit card information. And experts say incidents like the recent data theft at Target´s stores will get worse before they get better. That´s in part because U.S. credit and debit cards rely on an easy-to-copy magnetic strip on the back of the card, which stores account information using the same technology as cassette tapes. "We are using 20th century cards against 21st century hackers," says Mallory Duncan, general counsel at the National Retail Federation. "The thieves have moved on but the cards have not." In most countries outside the U.S., people carry cards that use digital chips

Comments:
There´s something ironic about a store´s name becoming the placed hacked "big time" by thieves overseas. Sounds like their IT department would rather spend their money elsewhere than issue new secure cards when available. Can´t wait till the security-less 0bamaCare shows up under similar circumstances. Just another "glitch."

Bull-oney. It doesn´t matter what technology is used to transfer the card´s data, if you have someone (probably on the inside) who can insert gathering software, you´re going to be hacked.

Chips can be read by someone who walks by you or stands behind you in one of 0bama´s "queues". Once the data is in the store´s computer it doesn´t matter what form it was in on the card.

If you think credit cards are insecure take a look at your social security card. That´s why millions of uneducated illegal aliens easily fraudulently use them.

Why would any demonrat jump on the wagon and pass a law to change a strip to a digital code? It would interfere with their redistribution of wealth mentality.

If this had happened during a Republican presidency, the media would have been filled with stories about how the government failed to provide adequate safeguards to protect our vulnerable consumers. Now, its the "easy to copy" magnetic strip that´s the problem. That means the businessman is the culprit. And everyone knows that businessmen are Republicans.

Previous posters are right. In this case, it wasn´t the "type" of card that mattered, it was hacking that got the info.

BTW, If you got one of the new cards with the RFI chip, leave it in it´s protective foil sleeve when not using it. That will prevent ID thieves from "scanning" the RFI.

Thieves aren´t the only ones who can remotely scan RFID chips. The store can scan them and track you whenever you walk down an aisle, pause at a display, etc.

Frankly, that´s more than I want them to know.

Fortunately capitalism is inventive and you can buy wallets that block rfid signals from being read when the card is in your wallet. The rest of this - this is private industry, not the government - I don´t see "national payment cards" or anything else of the sort coming down the pike as long as there is Obamacare to point to as a warning for what happens when government overreaches. I know that not being alarmist can be disappointing, but the technology really DOES need updating.

Tony Abbott says rescue teams have homed in on signals they are now certain belong to the black box flight recorder from missing Malaysian flight MH370. The Prime Minister, who is in Shanghai, spoke after an aviation expert claimed the breakthrough discovery had been made. Mr Abbott said they were now engaged in a race against time to find the black box as the signal starts to fade. Perth, Australia - Australia’s prime minister says searchers hunting for the missing Malaysian jetliner are confident underwater signals that have been picked up are coming from the jet’s black box. Tony Abbott told reporters while on an official visit to China that Australian authorities are confident they know the location of the black box from the plane that disappeared without a trace on March 8 during a flight from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, to Beijing. The plane’s black boxes, or flight data and cockpit voice recorders, could help solve the mystery of why Flight 370 veered so far off course.

Washington - Even when Sylvia Mathews Burwell was in her early 30s, friends speculated that she might return to her native Hinton, W.Va., and run for governor someday. So far that has not happened, but plenty of other things under two presidents have. On Friday, President Obama is to nominate Ms. Burwell, currently director of the White House Office of Management and Budget, to take over one of the largest and most unwieldy parts of the federal bureaucracy as secretary of health and

A panel of House Republicans voted on Thursday to hold former IRS official Lois Lerner in contempt of Congress, citing her refusal to answer questions about the agency’s targeting of conservative organizations for special scrutiny. The 21-12 vote by the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, which has been probing the alleged abuse since the scandal erupted last spring, broke along party lines: each of the panel’s Republicans voted to censure Lerner, while the Democrats on the committee opposed the resolution. The vote comes a day after Republicans on a separate committee formally requested the Department of Justice to
