At least two US evacuation flights from South Sudan have been fired on, causing some injuries, say reports from Uganda, where the planes landed. The aircraft were attacked near Bor, which is occupied by forces loyal to former Vice-President Riek Machar, Ugandan officials say. [Snip] Details of the plane incident are still sketchy, but it appears at least one of them was hit, and several US personnel were injured. The aircraft returned to Uganda´s Entebbe airport near the capital Kampala. The South Sudanese army is trying to retake Bor, the capital of eastern Jonglei state, one of the most volatile

Freezing rain and then snow is expected to fall Tuesday. Roads will ice over. Some power lines will drop. Arctic cold will overtake rain on Tuesday morning, turn it to freezing rain in the early afternoon and snow at night. Summerville and other inland areas might see the change in the late morning, said Jonathan Lamb, National Weather Service, Charleston. As much as three-quarters of an inch of ice could drop. Inland could see maybe an inch of snow Tuesday night. "It´s pretty much going to be an all-day thing," said meteorologist Brett Cimbora with the Charleston office.

The Republican Party has a great opportunity to re-gain control of the country, but it must seize the day, U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina said Saturday night. The GOP is poised to win back a majority in the Senate and keep its advantage in the House in Congressional elections this fall, Graham said. [Snip] Graham, who is up for re-election, is facing GOP primary challengers state Sen. Lee Bright of Spartanburg, Orangeburg attorney Bill Connor, Upstate businessman Richard Cash and Citadel graduate and Lowcountry public relations businesswoman Nancy Mace. They accuse Graham of not being a true conservative.

It was the most unlikely crack military unit ever put together, with an equally improbable mission. The Fine Arts and Archives unit (MFAA), known as the Monuments Men, were the most cultured and eclectic Allied force of World War II, led by a Cambridge professor, Geoffrey Webb, with art historians, museum curators, critics and connoisseurs among their number. [Snip] But Hollywood, not for the first time, stands accused of playing fast and loose with the facts, diminishing the extent of the British MFAA’s efforts while exaggerating those of the U.S. Today only one British member of the MFAA remains--a woman.

Obamacare enlists 3 MILLION Americans but

The number of people enrolled in private health insurance under Obamacare has soared by more than one-third in recent weeks to around 3 million, according to government data released on Friday. Marilyn Tavenner, administrator of the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), announced the preliminary tally in a blog posting. She forecast that enrollment through new federal and state health insurance marketplaces would continue to grow in coming weeks as a public outreach campaign accelerates. The new data adds to evidence that President Barack Obama´s administration has turned the corner on enrollment after a botched October 1 launch.

The US Olympic Committee has advised athletes taking part in the upcoming Sochi Games to avoid wearing their uniforms or Team USA logos outside Olympic venues. The warning for American athletes not to advertise their nationality due to security concerns came in a memo from the committee, which prepared it with the advice of the State Department, officials said, confirming a report in the Wall Street Journal. State Department spokesman Marie Harf said "the US Olympic Committee, I think, had discussed with its athletes, as part of how to sort of stay safe and things to look out for as

Hand guns should be legalised and

The Ukip leader has said it is party policy for hand guns to be legalised and licensed in the UK despite being banned in the UK for the last 18 years. Mr Farage said the current ban on the guns, which were made illegal following the school shooting at Dunblane in 1996, was “ludicrous.” Speaking on LBC Radio Mr Farage said that it was Ukip policy to create a “proper licensing policy” and that people who kept hand guns responsibly locked up and had were willing to get an official license should “absolutely” be allowed them. Winter whiteout carnage as massive

A massive pile up during a whiteout storm in Indiana on Thursday afternoon killed three people and injured more than 20 others. Chaotic scenes of jackknifed trailers and the mangled wreckage of cars packed across three lanes of the highway could be seen after visibility dropped to nearly zero at about 3.30pm. More than 40 vehicles, including semitrailers and cars, were involved in the deadly crash near Michigan City, but wintry conditions and the scale of the crash site slowed rescue efforts. One driver was still trapped in their car at 6.30pm, three hours after the crash happened, as rescue crews worked

Pensioners with cancer are being written off as too old to treat, campaigners said yesterday. They cited figures showing survival rates for British patients aged 75 and over are among the worst in Europe. Young lung cancer sufferers are only 10 percent more likely to die within five years than their continental counterparts. But pensioners with the disease have 44 percent less chance of survival. The figure for stomach cancer--at 45 percent--is even worse. And Britons with prostate cancer are a fifth less likely to survive than Europeans if they are 85 and over. Just 43 percent live for five

To call Twitter a wild west is an understatement – it’s regressed far beyond that. We’re back to tribes and mob rule – with added speed and bloodlust. The inhabitants are confused and angry and move in swarms. You never know when they’ll suddenly swerve in unison and come at you. But how to deal with this random, terrifying phenomenon? Some hope we can get rid of it by civilising Twitter: introduce a basic justice system, swap the tribes for a sort of centralised government, perhaps move everyone on from hunter-gathering to nomadic farming. This might take a while.

Fonda, who has been infamous since she took a trip to North Vietnam in 1972 and was pictured wearing a helmet and posing with a gun during the war which was taken as an insult to American troops, was one of two actresses that she said she looks up to as she thinks about growing older. Stephen Hawking has produced a "mind-bending" new theory that argues black holes do not actually exist - at least not in the way we currently perceive them. Instead, in his paper, Information Preservation and Weather Forecasting for Black Holes, Hawking proposes that black holes can exist without 'event horizons', the invisible cover believed to surround every black hole.During a previous lecture, 'Into the Black Hole', Hawkins described an event horizon as the boundary of a black hole, "where gravity is just strong enough to drag light back, and prevent it escaping".
“Falling through the event horizon, is a bit like going over Niagara Falls in a canoe", he said. "If you are above the falls, you can get away if you paddle fast enough, but once you are over the edge, you are lost. There's no way back.

Stockman, who submitted a last-minute longshot primary challenge to Senator John Cornyn (R-TX), has missed fifteen roll call votes since January 9, and has held nary a campaign event, despite drastically trailing Cornyn in the polls for an election in early March. Reporters trying to track Stockman down have been met with unresponsive campaign and congressional offices, though he appeared to have been located last week in Cairo, Egypt. Amazon Prime is like crack, people warn me in hushed, cautionary tones. Once you try it, you’re hooked. I personally have not signed up for Amazon’s premiere, super-duper, fancy-dancy, wave-o’-the-future membership program, even though I’m a frequent customer. But I’m fascinated by the transformation people talk about once they do. “Oh, you’ll see,” they tell me, “you’ll see.” On its face, Prime offers two simple things: Free two-day shipping on most purchases, and access to streaming movies and TV shows. All for $80 a year. Whether or not people need two-day shipping, a few things seem to happen once they

Last week the Wall Street Journal published Gregory Hicks’s column “Benghazi and the smearing of Chris Stevens.” It would be easy to overlook Hicks’s column in the crush of last week’s news, but it is deserving of special attention. In the column Hicks offers his eyewitness testimony to the security issues that Stevens dealt with at our Libyan facilities before his death. The redacted report of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence Committee that was released on January 15 has left some to draw the conclusion that Stevens rejected additional security and to imply that he is responsible for the success
