The CIA secretly held Syrian militants, rather than Libya, responsible for the Lockerbie bombing, according to newly unearthed testimony from a former US spy in the Middle East. Dr Richard Fuisz said in a sworn deposition in 2001 that he was told by up to 15 senior Syrian officials that the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine-General Command (PFLP-GC) had carried out the attack. He also testified that CIA bosses told him the PFLP-GC was responsible, according to a lawyer´s note of a second deposition. On a day when his signature health care program suffered the latest in a series of website outages, President Barack Obama made one last 2013 pitch to a standing-room-only thong of journalists who have engaged lately in more knife-sharpening than hero-worship. He tried to tee up a series of economic achievements, noting the addition of ´another 2 million jobs, adding up to 8 million in just over the past 45 months.´ We head into next year with an economy that is stronger than it was when we started the year,´ he insisted,´ with unemployment ´the lowest in 5 years´ and

A Texas federal judge has accused the Department of Homeland Security of delivering children smuggled into the United States to their illegal immigrant parents. U.S. District Judge Andrew S Hanen filed a court order late last week claiming that in more than one case before his court, immigration officials had arrested human traffickers and then delivered the children being smuggled ´to the custody of the parent illegally living in the United States.´ This action makes the DHS complicit in aiding that Mexican drug cartels that control the people smuggling rings, says Hanen, adding that the ´government is not only allowing

It only took a few hours for a bipartisan congressional push against Iran´s nuclear ambitions to become Oval Office roadkill on Thursday, as the White House insisted that President Barack Obama will veto any effort to introduce new sanctions on the Islamic republic while the State Department works its diplomatic levers. A group of 13 Democrats and 13 Republicans in the U.S. Senate introduced a bill that would levy tough new penalties on Iran if it fails to prove by May that it has terminated its nuclear weapons program. But in his afternoon press briefing, White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said

The State Department set aside a staggering $11,519,617 on hotels and ground transportation costs for President Obama and his entourage to attend Nelson Mandela´s memorial service last week, it was revealed today. One contract letter budgeted more than $8.2 million for ´passenger vehicles, SUVs, vans, and buses, as well as supplies and goods vehicles such as pickup trucks, box trucks, and larger capacity vehicles,´ according to documents first posted online by the Weekly Standard. North Korea threatens to

North Korea has threatened to attack South Korea "without notice" in response to anti-Pyongyang rallies on the anniversary of the death of its former leader. The threat to launch an unannounced strike was conveyed in a fax sent from the North´s National Defence Commission to South Korea´s National Security Council, according to Yonhap news agency. It came shortly after several conservative groups held protests in Seoul on the second anniversary of the death of the military regime´s former leader Kim Jong-il. Some protestors reportedly burnt photographs of the current leader Kim Jong-un, an action condemned in North Korea as an

When Britain’s long decade of conflict draws to a close next year, with the completion of combat operations in Afghanistan, the perfectly reasonable response of many people will be: “Never Again.” To date, our involvement in Afghanistan and Iraq has cost the lives of 625 British servicemen and women, resulted in hundreds more suffering appalling injuries and cost us tens of billions of pounds. And that is just this country’s contribution. When you consider the trillions of dollars squandered by the Bush administration, as well as the military sacrifices made by other countries, the figures are truly mind-blowing.

Rarely has the economic gulf that separates the English-speaking world and continental Europe looked quite as wide as it does today. While much of the eurozone remains mired in an economic funk, Britain and America are recovering fast, with rising demand and near record levels of private-sector job creation. As if the last, crisis-ridden three years haven’t already given Europe’s policy elite enough to think about, this juxtaposition in fortunes must surely have awoken them to the truth: monetary union isn’t working. Unfortunately, the reality is that euroland continues to stumble blindly from one botched response to another, neither able

Not so long ago, casually throwing the Knights Templar into polite conversation was a litmus test of mental health. One of Umberto Eco’s characters in Foucault’s Pendulum summed it up perfectly. He declared that you could recognise a lunatic "by the liberties he takes with common sense, by his flashes of inspiration, and by the fact that sooner or later he brings up the Templars". But all good things come to an end. The enigmatic medieval monk-knights are no longer a fringe interest for obsessives. They are now squarely mainstream. And as 18 March 2014 draws closer, Templarmania is going

Passive smoking doesn´t give you lung cancer. So says a new report publicised by the American Cancer Institute which will come as no surprise whatsoever to anyone with a shred of integrity who has looked into the origins of the great "environmental tobacco smoke" meme. It was, after all, a decade ago that the British Medical Journal, published the results of a massive, long-term survey into the effects of second-hand tobacco smoke. Between 1959 and 1989 two American researchers named James Enstrom and Geoffrey Kabat surveyed no few than 118,094 Californians. Fierce anti-smoking campaigners themselves, they began the research because they

Try as it might, the White House just cannot put the Edward Snowden story to rest: the leaks keep on dribbling out and this week the US District Court in Washington ruled that the bulk collection of phone records is "Orwellian" and likely to be unconstitutional. That (slightly histrionic) opinion will certainly be subject to appeal and review--ultimately by the Supreme Court--but whatever the eventual result, it means that the White House no longer has any hope of parking this story, as it might have hoped when it first broke. This is to be welcomed, but with an important caveat.

Is this man simply expressing his beliefs or spewing bigotry?Either way, Phil Robertson, the patriarch in A&E´s "Duck Dynasty," won´t be duck calling on air anytime soon. The network suspended him after slamming gays in a magazine interview. In the January issue of GQ, Robertson said homosexuality is a sin and puts it in the same category as bestiality and promiscuity. "It seems like, to me, a vagina -- as a man -- would be more desirable than a man´s anus. That´s just me. I´m just thinking: There´s more there! She´s got more to offer. I mean, come on, dudes! Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid was hospitalized early Friday morning as a “precaution” after feeling ill, a spokesman said, adding that doctors concluded "everything is normal" after testing. “Early this morning, Senator Reid was not feeling well and as a precaution decided to go to the hospital. Tests have been conducted and everything is normal. He is alert, resting and feeling better,” spokesman Adam Jentleson said in a statement. "Doctors have asked that he remain in the hospital for observation so he will not be working today." The Senate is set to finish its business for the year on Friday.

For a few hours, it looked like Americans would quietly accept the suspension of popular “Duck Dynasty” star Phil Robertson for his unfiltered opinions about sin, sex, gays and blacks in a magazine interview. But then, as if on cue, hundreds of thousands of fans of the openly Christian, duck-hunting businessman took to social networks and started their backlash. As of Thursday night, more than 1.1 million people “liked” the “Stand With Phil Robertson” Facebook page, while about the same number had clicked their support for another Facebook page called “Boycott A&E Until Phil Robertson Is Put Back On Duck

The suspension of Phil Robertson from A&E’s Duck Dynasty is outrageous in a nation that values freedom, according to social critic and openly gay, dissident feminist Camille Paglia. “I speak with authority here, because I was openly gay before the ‘Stonewall rebellion,’ when it cost you something to be so. And I personally feel as a libertarian that people have the right to free thought and free speech,” Paglia, a professor at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, said on Laura Ingraham’s radio show Thursday. “In a democratic country, people have the right to be homophobic as well as they have

The Obama administration Thursday night significantly relaxed the rules of the health-care law for millions of consumers whose individual insurance policies have been canceled, saying they could buy bare-bones health plans or entirely avoid the requirement that most Americans have health insurance. The surprise announcement, four days before the Dec. 23 deadline for people to choose coverage that begins on Jan. 1, triggered an immediate backlash from the health insurance industry and raised new fairness questions about a law intended to promote affordable and comprehensive coverage. “This type of last-minute change will cause tremendous instability in the marketplace and lead

The A&E Network’s suspension of Phil Robertson, star of the most popular reality show in the history of television, for espousing views on homosexuality identical to those found in the New Testament may not be the first PC lynching in the history of our country, but it is certainly now the most prominent. It is also a singular example of how political correctness, via cultural relativism, is used to undermine democracy and freedom of speech and is, at its core, fascistic. Yes, I just used the f-word and quite deliberately. PC and cultural relativism are the godchildren of Martin Heidegger

Phil Robertson´s anti-gay comments aren´t the only part of his interview with GQ causing controversy. The 67-year-old "Duck Dynasty" star was suspended by A&E Wednesday for calling homosexuality sinful — and putting gay people in same category as terrorists. While those quotes quickly went viral, it wasn´t his only brow-raising statement in the interview; he also implied that African Americans were happier living under Jim Crow laws.
