NEW ORLEANS — The music of rock ´n´ roll Hall of Fame performer Fats Domino will "float" through the streets of New Orleans this Carnival season. Domino has been named honorary grand marshal of the Krewe of Orpheus, the star-studded Carnival club that traditionally parades the night before Mardi Gras. Although he won´t be riding in the March 3 parade, his eldest son, Antoine Domino III, is expected to ride on a float equipped with a piano and speakers to perform his father´s greatest hits, such as "Blue Monday," ´´The Fat Man," ´´Blueberry Hill" and "Walking to New Orleans." Comments:
I have all Fats´ records. The first time I heard him was as a ditzy teenybopper whose friend was the proud owner of a brand new 45, "Ain´t That a Shame?". Love the man.

Congrats to Fats! Parades are much more enjoyable than being a victim in the hurricane Katrina. Happy you were found intact, sir. Thanks so much for your music and hours of enjoyment.

WASHINGTON — There are many different indicators of an unhappy society. Sociologists point to crime rates, suicide rates, the incidence of divorce, even the frequency of customers leaving the lights on in public restrooms. Economists point to economic growth rates, unemployment rates, the University of Michigan’s monthly economic outlook for the United States. One of my own personal favorites is the sudden transformation of the Republic’s healthy, happy, rosy-cheeked bicycle riders into a mob of angry cranks. It happens every few decades and is a sure sign of an unhappy society. I well remember back in the late 1970s when, come to

In politics, lying is the new sex. Even the lesser sin, exaggeration, is grounds for questions about your suitability to run for office. Americans may be becoming more like the French in tolerating peccadilloes (just ask Rep. Mark Sanford of South Carolina or Sen. David Vitter of Louisiana about surviving a sex scandal), but get a detail wrong about whether you divorced at 21 or at 19, and woe unto you. That’s what happened to Wendy Davis over the weekend. You may know her as the Texas state senator in pink sneakers who delivered an 11-hour filibuster against abortion restrictions in June.

Morning Joe Panel: Wendy

On MSNBC’s Morning Joe early today, the panel discussed the growing controversy over the accuracy and truthfulness of claims made by Texas Gubernatorial candidate Wendy Davis. The segment has a scare chyron across the bottom of the screen that laments “GUBERNATORIAL RACE GETS UGLY EARLY.” Oh fret and bother. Mika Brzezinski tells us that Republicans have “pounced” on the “discrepancies,” and then tosses to NBC News political reporter Kasie Hunt, who immediately brings up what is sure to be the talking point du jour, the “basic narrative.” The basic narrative is correct, you see, even if the details are wrong. In David Remnick’s nearly 17,000-word article in the New Yorker, President Obama spoke about whether the use of drones was radicalizing civilian populations we need to win over: Look, you wrestle with it. And those who have questioned our drone policy are doing exactly what should be done in a democracy—asking some tough questions. The only time I get frustrated is when folks act like it’s not complicated and there aren’t some real tough decisions, and are sanctimonious, as if somehow these aren’t complicated questions. Even if you have, as I do, some sympathy with the point the president is making, this

A US official close to President Barack Obama and Secretary of State John Kerry said both men are disturbed over what is being perceived in their inner circle as "Jewish activism in Congress" that they think is being encouraged by the Israeli government, Israel Radio reported on Thursday. The official has informed Israeli government figures that the president and secretary of state are disappointed over repeated attacks made against them by leading members of the Jewish community in the US. According to Israel Radio, Israeli diplomats and foreign officers have warned against this trend. According to officials based in foreign

The company that conducted a background investigation on the contractor Edward J. Snowden fraudulently signed off on hundreds of thousands of incomplete security checks in recent years, the Justice Department said Wednesday. The government said the company, U.S. Investigations Services, defrauded the government of millions of dollars by submitting more than 650,000 investigations that had not been completed. The government uses those reports to help make hiring decisions and decide who gets access to national security secrets. In addition to Mr. Snowden, the company performed the background check for Aaron Alexis, a 34-year-old military contractor who killed 12 people at the Washington

It is a spring night in rural Texas, and crickets sing as a woman in her 60s with broad shoulders and short brown hair stops a pregnant young woman on an empty sidewalk. The older woman has heard that the younger woman, her neighbor Lucy Mae, may be seeking an abortion. “You don’t have to do this,” she says, her brown eyes and long loose cheeks filling with emotion. “Children are a miracle—a gift from God!” The women are performing a scene in Doonby, a movie about a drifter who awakens a sleepy Texas town to its spiritual possibilities. Five men believed to be mobsters were taken into custody on Thursday on charges of murder and other crimes linked to an infamous 1978 Lufthansa Heist at John F. Kennedy International Airport, an FBI spokeswoman said. The arrests in the three-decades-old crime, made famous by the 1990 film "Goodfellas," were the result of an FBI search last summer at the New York home of James "Jimmy the Gent" Burke, said FBI spokeswoman Kelly Langmesser. Burke, the suspected mastermind of the heist who died in prison in 1996 while serving time for the murder of a drug dealer. Robert DeNiro played

When it comes to classical music and American culture, the fat lady hasn’t just sung. Brünnhilde has packed her bags and moved to Boca Raton. Classical music has been circling the drain for years, of course. There’s little doubt as to the causes: the fingernail grip of old music in a culture that venerates the new; new classical music that, in the words of Kingsley Amis, has about as much chance of public acceptance as pedophilia; formats like opera that are extraordinarily expensive to stage; and an audience that remains overwhelmingly old and white in an America that’s increasingly neither. A clear majority of the American people say that the Obama administration is not competent to manage the affairs of the U.S. government, according to a Quinnipiac poll released Wednesday. Those who believe the Obama administration is incompetent weigh in at a clip of 53-42 – a margin of 11 points. In addition, more people believe that the president is not even paying attention to what’s going on than the contrary: 47-45. (That may be because the president finds out about all those “phony scandals” by reading about them in the news.) The president gets a negative score on a

In a just world, no politician would leave office wealthier than on the day he takes the oath of office. We don’t live in a just world, alas, and the rags-to-riches life stories of more than a few U.S. senators strain credulity. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, once an officer of the Capitol Police, joined the ranks of multimillionaires during his four decades on the public payroll. He says he’s a good investor, and no doubt he is, but the watchdog group Cause of Action wants the Senate Ethics Committee to inquire as to whether and how he used his office

While the administration publicly expresses full confidence in its health care law, privately it fears one part of the system is so flawed it could bankrupt insurance companies and cripple ObamaCare itself. The lawyer slated to represent a top Christie Christie aide sacked over the Bridgegate scandal is no longer representing her, MailOnline has learned, leading to speculation that she may be planning to turn on her former boss. The news came on an icy, snow-drifted Tuesday as Christie took his oath of office for a second term as New Jersey´s governor. Walter Timpone, a Christie-linked attorney whom Kelly retained after her public firing, received the subpoena served on her Friday by a New Jersey Assembly special investigative committee. But he is stepping aside because he has a conflict of interest.

The Pentagon on Wednesday is expected to announce widespread changes to rules governing religious items and religion-based physical attributes that service members can maintain while in uniform — including beards, some religious tattoos, and turbans. NBC News obtained an early draft of the new Department of Defense instruction which states that the military will make every effort to accommodate “individual expressions of sincerely held beliefs” (conscience, moral principles, or religious beliefs) of service members. It goes on to say that unless doing so could have an adverse impact on military readiness, unit cohesion, good order and discipline, health and safety,

Are you dazed and confused by Barack Obama, the nominal Democrat, whose conduct as president since 2009 has seen him sink from nearly 70 percent to 40 percent or less in the national polling, from which he has seemed to learn nothing, but still marches on? Fear not, the doctor is in: Fred Siegel of the Manhattan Institute, whose latest book, The Revolt Against The Masses: How Liberalism Has Undermined the Middle Class, explains all you wanted to know about Obama, and much else. It explains why he never became the new Franklin D. Roosevelt, John F. Kennedy or Lyndon B.

What’s so great about Zulu? To answer that question properly, you need to pass this test first. 1) Do you know Men of Harlech off by heart? 2) Can you name at least half of the 11 Victoria Cross winners in the film (by their nicknames where possible) without resorting to Google? 3) Have you ever found yourself stirred to ridiculous feelings of patriotism by John Barry’s magnificent film score on the morning commute? I really hope someone else answers “yes” to all three, otherwise you can chalk me up as a lone madman. Zulu--released 50 years ago this week--is

The bare-bones Wendy Davis story — the one without embellishment — is sufficiently inspiring as a matrix for defying expectations. The daughter of a teenage mother and a teenage mother herself, Davis managed to beat the odds by getting a college education and Ivy League law degree, then launching a political career that’s brought her national adulation. But since Davis’ Democratic gubernatorial ambitions caught fire last year, “facts have been blurred” in the retelling of her life’s story, as reported Sunday by this newspaper’s senior political writer, Wayne Slater.
