Rick Perry brings CPAC crowd to its feet
Politico, by Katie Glueck    Original Article

NATIONAL HARBOR, Md. — Texas Gov. Rick Perry delivered one of the best-received speeches so far at the Conservative Political Action Conference, bringing the audience to its feet and eliciting loud cheers Friday morning as he outlined a small-government vision and praised the accomplishments of fellow Republican governors. Perry, whose 2012 presidential campaign crumbled amid a series of missteps — including the infamous “oops” moment, in which he forgot one of the three federal agencies he wanted to abolish — is weighing another go-round in 2016, and his allies insist that this time, the campaign would go differently. At CPAC,

Ukraine crisis: Armed men

Armed men thought to be Russian have seized a Ukrainian military base in the Crimean city of Sevastopol. A Reuters news agency journalist said no shots were fired and negotiations between the two sides were going on. Interfax-Ukraine earlier reported that about 100 Ukrainian servicemen had been deployed at the base before the raid. Troops wearing Russian uniform without insignia and their supporters have blockaded bases in Crimea since taking control of the peninsula last week.

Obama’s bizarre immigration rules

Last month, President Obama took an action making it easier for supporters of Islamist terrorists to be granted asylum in this country. At the same time, persecuted Christians face a brick wall at the Obama State Department in their efforts to secure refugee status, and a report this week reveals Israeli officials are now finding it more difficult to get simple visitor visas or to even renew existing visas. Why is all of this suddenly emerging? After the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, none of us ever imagined a dozen years later we’d be negotiating with the Taliban in Afghanistan, supplying aid

Keeping Your Insurance Policy

The Obama administration announced a new policy on Wednesday that will allow many people to renew their existing insurance policies for two more years even though the policies don’t provide the comprehensive coverage and consumer protections required by the Affordable Care Act. The move is designed to provide political cover for Democratic senators facing tough re-election campaigns in Republican-leaning states where the president is especially unpopular. The Democrats have been hit with a barrage of attack ads from conservative political-action groups highlighting the cases of individuals who complained that they faced higher premiums when their old (less comprehensive) policies were canceled

Ahead of a possible Hillary Clinton 2016 run, the Republican National Committee is getting in on the quest for long-withheld documents from the Clinton Presidential Library. “Americans deserve to know who was responsible for keeping on lockdown documents that should have been released over a year ago,” said RNC Chairman Reince Priebus in releasing the request Friday morning, noting that the 12-year shelter period for the documents expired in January, 2013. “It’s easy to see why Democrats would want them hidden," Priebus charges. "Among other things, they have revealed that even in the Clinton years, liberals knew that it was a deliberate

Bob Costas’ Olympic pink eye

Bob Costas got his infamous case of Olympic pink eye from botched Botox, a source claims to Page Six. NBC’s prime-time Olympics host, who had to take a six-day absence after coming down with viral conjunctivitis in both eyes, contracted the infection after a Botox procedure to smooth out wrinkles prior to the Olympics. Our source said, “Bob’s eye infection was due to botched Botox. This isn’t the first time he’s had it.” NBC strongly denies that Costas — who arrived to host the games in Sochi with a forehead smoother than the Olympic luge track — developed the infection from a

Bitcoin’s Mysterious Creator

Even as it has grown into a new type of digital money worth billions of dollars, Bitcoin has always retained an air of mystery. Central to its cachet has been the mythic status of the system’s creator. Its developer went by the name Satoshi Nakamoto, but that is all that Bitcoin’s adopters seemed to know — or wanted to know. After all, Bitcoin was a project dedicated in part to making it easier to avoid the all-seeing gaze of the government and corporate America. But the inventor of the virtual currency may not be quite the international man of mystery that some

Americans support the idea of constructing the Keystone XL oil pipeline between Canada and the United States by a nearly 3 to 1 margin, with 65 percent saying it should be approved and 22 percent opposed, according to a new Washington Post-ABC News poll. The findings also show that the public thinks the massive project, which aims to ship 830,000 barrels of oil a day from Alberta and the northern Great Plains to refineries on the Gulf Coast, will produce significant economic benefits. Eighty-five percent say the pipeline would create a significant number of jobs, with 62 percent saying they “strongly”

WASHINGTON — The FBI is investigating the alleged unauthorized removal of classified documents from a secret CIA facility by Senate Intelligence Committee staff who prepared a study of the agency’s use of harsh interrogation techniques on suspected terrorists in secret overseas detention centers, McClatchy has learned. The FBI’s involvement takes to a new level an extraordinary behind-the-scenes battle over the report that has plunged relations between the agency and its congressional overseers to their iciest in decades. The dispute also has intensified uncertainty about how much of the committee’s four-year-long study will ever be made public. The FBI investigation stemmed from a

The new health insurance marketplaces appear to be making little headway in signing up Americans who lack insurance, the Affordable Care Act’s central goal, according to a pair of new surveys. Only one in 10 uninsured people who qualify for private plans through the new marketplaces enrolled as of last month, one of the surveys shows. The other found that about half of uninsured adults have looked for information on the online exchanges or planned to look. The snapshots from the surveys released Thursday provide preliminary answers to what has been one of the biggest mysteries since HealthCare.gov and separate

The inside story of how the White House

Washington Post, by Zachary Goldfarb    Original Article

In recent weeks, President Obama has made a $10.10 minimum wage the centerpiece of his economic agenda. But early last year, White House strategists rejected a figure so high, worried that it could destroy jobs and anger the business community just as the regulation-heavy Affordable Care Act was about to take effect. Instead, former officials say, the White House settled on a more cautious path, unveiling a $9-an-hour minimum wage proposal — a target even lower than Obama had proposed during the 2008 campaign. “We wanted to ensure it was a moderate increase in the minimum wage so we didn’t spark any

Why was our intelligence community caught so flat-footed about Putin’s intentions in Ukraine? That’s a question being asked on Capitol Hill, and in Politico. One possible answer to the query is, “No, it wasn’t.” That one was given by James Clapper, Director of National Intelligence, and CIA spokesman Todd Ebitz, who both made statements to the effect that the US intelligence community “included warnings of possible scenarios for a Russian military intervention in Ukraine.” James Clapper has more than a bit of a general credibility problem regarding statements to the American public about intelligence, however. And a warning of a

House Oversight Committee Chairman Darrell Issa joined Megyn Kelly Thursday night to react to the uproar over him cutting off Elijah Cummings‘ mic during a contentious IRS hearing, saying that accusations he was “racist” are just “beneath response.” Issa suggested Cummings’ outburst was a “pre-staged event,” but Kelly asked, “Who cares? Let him have his couple of minutes to rip on you! You’re a big guy, you can take it!” He acknowledged that in hindsight, he might have let Cummings rant, but it’s completely unjustified for any member of Congress to try and get his chairmanship revoked over the incident

So, Lois Lerner still won´t talk about her role in the illegal targeting and harassment by the IRS of conservative and Tea Party groups seeking 501(c)(4) tax exemptions. Lerner appeared for a second time Wednesday before the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform and claimed her Fifth Amendment right not to incriminate herself. It isn´t hard to figure out why Lerner´s lips are sealed. First, she knows the House of Representatives can cite her for contempt of Congress, but Attorney General Eric Holder would decide whether she is prosecuted on that charge. Lerner need not worry since President Obama has

During his speech to the CPAC crowd on Thursday, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) facetiously recalled “Presidents” Bob Dole, John McCain and Mitt Romney to make a point about how Republicans need to “stand for principle” in order to win big elections. Today, Sen. McCain fired back at Cruz during an appearance on MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell Reports. McCain said he spoke to Cruz about the comments and it was “cordial” but he took specific offense at the remarks concerning Dole. “He can say what he wants to about me and he can say anything he wants to about Mitt,” McCain said,

Via Matt Lewis, here’s Maverick once again demonstrating that “cordial relationship” in politico-speak means “two people who can’t publicly admit to hating each other but obviously do.” And it’s a cheap shot. Cruz’s point yesterday at CPAC was that Dole, McCain, and Romney lost because they weren’t conservative enough. That’s not because they’re gutless — he said specifically that they were “good” and “decent” men — but because they’re not committed, full-throated ideologues, even less so when they’re fighting for purple states in a national election. We can debate whether that’s true but there’s nothing offensive in raising the subject.

House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) apologized Thursday to his committee´s ranking Democratic member for cutting off his microphone at the end of a hearing Wednesday, according to a local report. Issa told the San Diego Union-Tribune that he personally apologized to Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-Md.). His apology comes after the House earlier Thursday voted down a motion to censure the chairman for his treatment of Cummings. Issa ended a hearing on the IRS scandal Wednesday despite Cummings´s attempt to make a statement and ask a question. When Cummings persisted in his effort to speak, Issa personally cut

What’s been said of confession — that it is good for one’s soul but bad for one’s reputation — can also be true of testifying to Congress, so Lois Lerner has chosen to stay silent. Hers, however, is an eloquent silence. The most intrusive and potentially most punitive federal agency has been politicized; the IRS has become an appendage of Barack Obama’s party. Furthermore, congruent with exhortations from some congressional Democrats, it is intensifying its efforts to suffocate groups critical of progressives, by delaying what once was the swift, routine granting of tax-exempt status. So, the IRS, far from repenting

One of the most seismic changes in American politics over the last decade has been the emergence of a sharp generational split among the electorate. The Democratic Party owes its success in the last two presidential elections almost entirely to overwhelming support among the very young, which has overcome continued conservatism among older voters. The Pew Research Institute has dominated the field of exploring the ideological cleavages among different generations. And its latest survey shows again how the liberalism of the youngest voting cohort, millennials, remains firm, and likely to continue to recast the electorate. A few charts from the survey

Barack Obama´s parents were "married in name only," according to David Maraniss´s 2012 Barack Obama: The Story. But since definitions of an "in name only" marriage vary, such as "a marriage of convenience" or "a sexless marriage," and Maraniss failed to explain his claim, it is unclear what he was implying. Therefore, Obama´s oft-told nativity story must be searched for the full implications of Obama´s parents´ "in name only" marriage. (snip) So when did Ann´s and Obama Sr.´s "whatever happened happened fast" wedding happen? For no apparent reason, confusion abounds among Obama´s biographers over the wedding date:

During the hour-long phone call, President Obama urged Russian forces to return to their bases. The White House said it hoped the crisis could be settled diplomatically and urged the Russian and Ukrainian governments to hold direct talks in an effort to find a settlement. The President called for an agreement which would protect the interests of both Ukrainians and ethnic Russians living in Ukraine. This was the second phone call between the two leaders in a
