There are double dippers and then there is Patrick DeBlasio, a man with five public jobs in New Jersey. He now wants one more. DeBlasio wants to increase his workload by adding at least 10 hours a week as Highlands´ new chief financial officer. His annual compensation totaled $244,606 in 2012, according to state pension and payroll records. If hired in the new position, DeBlasio would be paid up to $65,000, a portion of which could be shared with an assistant, borough officials said.

It would be interesting to know why this new job (and probably the others) weren´t publicly posted. Maybe that´s where the story is.

Consolidate all the jobs this guy has into one with a single (and reasonable salary). Problem solved.

Steve Lonegan received state

He opposes government bailouts. He chides Cory Booker for relying on aid from Gov. Chris Christie. And he boasts of his fiscal leadership as mayor of Bogota. But every now and then, even Republican U.S. Senate candidate Steve Lonegan needs a little help from his friends. Even if those friends are Democrats. In 2006, Lonegan asked former Gov. Jon Corzine’s administration for a $500,000 bailout to balance Bogota’s books, according to documents obtained by The Star-Ledger. And he asked for Sen. Loretta Weinberg’s help to get it.

Politics, like the NFL, is a team sport. Just like football fans, voters are apt to root for the uniform as much as any individual player. That’s instructive to remember as Gov. Chris Christie sets off on a fundraising swing through Texas for his fellow Republicans. While there, he’s sure to sing the home team’s praises. And Texas Republicans are some of the kookiest in the game. The Texas GOP sets the bar for the far-right’s lunatic fringe.

Florida State Boxing Commission officials are reviewing the mixed martial arts license of Championship Fighting Alliance women´s featherweight tournament participant Fallon Fox after learning she is a transgender female. Fox revealed her original gender to SI.com on Monday, two days after Fox landed a knee to the chin of Ericka Newsome, who was knocked out in 39 seconds of their quarterfinal bout in Coral Gables, Fla. N.J.´s coldest weather in years
to come courtesy of warmth
from miles above North Pole

New Jersey is about to experience its coldest weather in several years this week, but while that isn´t terribly unusual for January, the likely reason for it is – suddenly warming temperatures miles above the Earth’s surface at the North Pole. An arctic air mass is expected to spill across the United States and enter the northeast on Sunday, dragged by a series of cold fronts that are forecast to drop high temperatures into the low- to mid-20s by mid-week, according to the National Weather Service.

A Bulgarian politician today survived an extraordinary assassination attempt when a man stormed the stage and held a gun to his head as he was giving a speech. Fortunately for Ahmed Dogan, leader of the Movement for Rights and Freedoms, the weapon misfired giving him time to react and hit the would-be assassins hand out of the way. Before he can attempt a second shot the unidentified suspect is tackled to the ground by security guards and delegates attending the conference in Sofia.

Is this man simply expressing his beliefs or spewing bigotry?Either way, Phil Robertson, the patriarch in A&E´s "Duck Dynasty," won´t be duck calling on air anytime soon. The network suspended him after slamming gays in a magazine interview. In the January issue of GQ, Robertson said homosexuality is a sin and puts it in the same category as bestiality and promiscuity. "It seems like, to me, a vagina -- as a man -- would be more desirable than a man´s anus. That´s just me. I´m just thinking: There´s more there! She´s got more to offer. I mean, come on, dudes! A&E broke its silence on Duck Dynasty star Phil Robertson’s anti-gay comments late Wednesday. The cable network announced Robertson is off the hit show for the time being. The network issued the following statement to EW: “We are extremely disappointed to have read Phil Robertson’s comments in GQ, which are based on his own personal beliefs and are not reflected in the series Duck Dynasty. His personal views in no way reflect those of A+E Networks, who have always been strong supporters and champions of the LGBT community. The network has placed Phil under hiatus from filming indefinitely.”

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid was hospitalized early Friday morning as a “precaution” after feeling ill, a spokesman said, adding that doctors concluded "everything is normal" after testing. “Early this morning, Senator Reid was not feeling well and as a precaution decided to go to the hospital. Tests have been conducted and everything is normal. He is alert, resting and feeling better,” spokesman Adam Jentleson said in a statement. "Doctors have asked that he remain in the hospital for observation so he will not be working today." The Senate is set to finish its business for the year on Friday.

For a few hours, it looked like Americans would quietly accept the suspension of popular “Duck Dynasty” star Phil Robertson for his unfiltered opinions about sin, sex, gays and blacks in a magazine interview. But then, as if on cue, hundreds of thousands of fans of the openly Christian, duck-hunting businessman took to social networks and started their backlash. As of Thursday night, more than 1.1 million people “liked” the “Stand With Phil Robertson” Facebook page, while about the same number had clicked their support for another Facebook page called “Boycott A&E Until Phil Robertson Is Put Back On Duck

The suspension of Phil Robertson from A&E’s Duck Dynasty is outrageous in a nation that values freedom, according to social critic and openly gay, dissident feminist Camille Paglia. “I speak with authority here, because I was openly gay before the ‘Stonewall rebellion,’ when it cost you something to be so. And I personally feel as a libertarian that people have the right to free thought and free speech,” Paglia, a professor at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, said on Laura Ingraham’s radio show Thursday. “In a democratic country, people have the right to be homophobic as well as they have

The Obama administration Thursday night significantly relaxed the rules of the health-care law for millions of consumers whose individual insurance policies have been canceled, saying they could buy bare-bones health plans or entirely avoid the requirement that most Americans have health insurance. The surprise announcement, four days before the Dec. 23 deadline for people to choose coverage that begins on Jan. 1, triggered an immediate backlash from the health insurance industry and raised new fairness questions about a law intended to promote affordable and comprehensive coverage. “This type of last-minute change will cause tremendous instability in the marketplace and lead

O ne year removed from re-election, President Obama´s approval rating has sunk to the lowest level of his presidency. Furthermore, Obama´s popularity among the Democratic Party base — whose rejuvenated support proved crucial last November — took a huge hit this past year. Only 54 percent of self-described liberals "very strongly" approve of Obama´s job performance, according to a Pew survey released this week. That´s down from an all-time high of nearly 90 percent, and a significant decline from the 73 percent who strongly approved of the president back in June. Why the steep drop? Well, the first year of Obama´s second term

Hours after we reported that Duck Dynasty star Phil Robertson dropped some illogical “logic” on homosexuality during his GQ interview, his home network A&E decided to indefinitely suspend him from the show. While Robertson’s comments were hilariously ignorant, they were predictable — especially given his family’s socially-conservative, Bible-loving image. Suspending the lead character for his wholly predictable comments is not only an overreaction but a gross misstep. To recap: The Duck Commander patriarch remarked to the men’s magazine that homosexuality is on par with bestiality, and used fifth-grade “logic” to imply that homosexual men should give up their ways of choosing a

The Ivy-League educated half-brother of President Obama is publishing his autobiography in which he makes the shocking claim their father dished out alcohol-fueled beatings to him and his mother and in one terrifying instance held a knife to her throat. Mark Obama Ndesandjo, 48, also uses his new book to set the U.S. president straight on inaccuracies he claims exist in his best-selling 1995 memoir Dreams From My Father and confirms they have never seen eye-to-eye because ´Barack thought I was too white and I thought he was too black.´ The self-published book, Cultures: My Odyssey of Self-Discovery, which will be
