The Obamacare ‘Shotgun Wedding’

The problem with solutions is that few of them tend to be perfect, even if they act in a mostly benign manner. Actions produce reactions, a principle as true in politics as it is in physics, and those tend to multiply when solutions increase in complexity. The nature of these unintended consequences changes dramatically when complex “solutions” turn out to be poorly designed and incompetently administered. The rollout of the Affordable Care Act has provided many real-world examples of this, but perhaps none so “unintended” as the consequences discovered by the Seattle Times this weekend. Another Obamacare surprise. Getting Medicaid could actually be a poison pill.

Kind of like the Pied Piper. Follow the "free" health insurance, only to realize later that it wasn´t free. By then, it´s too late.

So many "surprises" for us to find - sort of like "Easter Eggs" in video games, except these all make our lives more miserable. We passed the bill, and now we´re finding out what´s in it.

They passed it.

The Establishment Republicans rolled over and allowed it to be funded.

We are now really seeing what´s in it, and millions will pay the price.

First, Medicare is not an entitlement program. We paid for it by the sweat of our brow.

Second the Federal Government placed those dollars into the its general fund. Because the Fed did not invest those funds prudently, we now have a giant Federal Ponzi Scheme. With the baby boomers retiring, and smaller numbers of individuals paying into this Ponzi Scheme SSI is bankrupt.

Last, we need a complete audit of ObamaCare to identify all the unintended consequences, choke choke, and fix theses immediately.

As for Stinky and the Rats, they will be leaving unplanned in November 2014.

All this means is the medical government has a lien against the assets where in the past if someone with assets but no income didn´t pay their medical bills the doctors and the hospitals had an enforceable claim against the estate when they died. Either way someone has to pay. The federal goverment is in a better position to collect. Most hospitals tended to write off these amounts and then jack up the next guys´ bills to make up the difference.

I´m not particularly disturbed by this where, through taxpayer funds, an individual is able to get medical treatment where otherwise he could not afford it and in return the government is granted a lien on assets. Although, I am a bit suspicious as to how the government handles the recovery of the assets. I don´t see where the individual is harmed. I do think there should be an allowance for the life of the spouse. However, I do have a problem with it where ObamaCare mandates it, via automatically enrolls individuals in Medicaid and subjects them to this process. If this is premised on the aid actually being a secured loan then the individual, like with a loan, should have the freedom to contract... and as with a loan the government should be required to fully disclose all details.

There is something wrong when people expend 95% of their lifetime outlay for medical treatment during their last few days of life.

While government imposed ´death panels´ are a gruesome option, we must become more accepting of the inevitability of death.

Wildly expensive ´heroic measures´ must be used on the young....not the old and dying.

In any event, the government will find a way to do this as badly and as wastefully as possible.

There 19 trillion dollars in the IRAs and 401Ks . The feds are very anxiouto lay their hands on them. also the deductibility of contributions to those types of accts would cease . thiswould end up s more taxes or have tobe aid in as taxes,
There have been hearings on those-RFI. Request For Information.
The plan from the govt is that people are living too long and out living their money. So the govt will issue a 4% annuity.frer they grb the dough.

Do not be fooled. Not ALL homes will be seized. And if there are "shot-gun" marriages at the end of life, this will do nothing to reduce the lack of father in the home during the upbringing of children in impoverished areas.

This is simply a "wealth distribution" program. If an elderly person should out-live their savings and only their house is left, the government recovery program will exempt it from being seized if: 1) the heir´s income is below a certain level (approx 2 x poverty, as defined by government)or 2) the house has little value, not worth legal fees etc to seize it. So if you lie about your income (like the Organizing for Action/Obama people advise residents of Democrat-voting areas)to do or if you can pay a government crony appraiser from OFA to lie about the value, your house does not get seized. But if you have a job with a W2 report going to the government or are honest and honorable to report your income (i.e. you are not a neighborhood drug dealer, a waiter who does not declare tip income, or do not do a cash-only business), your parents´ home will not stay in the family, it will be seized and probably be funneled to some political crony in an under-the-table deal. Middle class homes will go and the ghetto thugs will keep theirs.

The seizure and sale of assets to pay back government assistance is hardly a new idea.

From other threads elsewhere I gather that it´s not at all new in Medicaid.

Remember, poor people probably aren´t going to successfully challenge the gub´mnt over the matter.

Now, about 95% of your medical costs being expended in your last 6 months, that´s because the life extending measures are costly.

Many of you mention repubics in your comments. I want to say this: I despise most of them, maybe almost all of them. I believe they have some kind of rotation: they vote for "us, little people" when they know that the law will definitely not pass. Otherwise they calculate how many have to vote with leftists and do it the way that today it is these 7 (or 11), next time different 7 (or 11). Pretending that they vote on merits not just blow sand in our eyes.
But today I would like to ask paul ryan (lower case intentional, him I despise completely) why did he initiate the latest law, what was the purpose of it? Is he that stupid that he didn´t know how the conservatives will react? Or is there something in this law that leftists wanted?

In response to #18, the seizure of assets under Medicaid is not new, that is true. But before, one had a choice of buying insurance and taking other actions to stay off Medicaid and avoid seizure of property. For instance, my cousins take care of their elderly mother at home instead of placing her in a nursing home. Dealing with Alzheimer´s is difficult and being a caregiver for such a person is a burden. But by making the choice to perform the care services themselves, they avoid Medicaid system and the seizure of the house and ranch once the mother dies.

Under Obamacare exchanges, you DO NOT HAVE A CHOICE to avoid Medicaid insurance. If your income is low, you get put into the Medicaid program. Under the current system, some elderly people who are covered by Medicare are also in the Medicaid program. It is the Medicaid system that is the issue here.

I have had several relatives whose parents´ property was seized. In one case, there seemed to be government vultures circling the property as it was very well maintained and in a good neighborhood. I suspect that it was seized, auctioned off to a crony at a very low price, then resold for a very high profit.

Sorry for above.

Medicare is fraught with fraud. Super fraud when end of life approaches. My father is dying. He recently fell and broke his hip. He had replacement surgery, but suffered a stroke in the process. He is in "rehab" now - but is going to go to heaven sooner that later, I fear. Yet a "geriatric psychiatrist" sees him. We just found out that he has been seeing my Dad in his retirement home for a long time. We have no idea on earth why. The "Dr." claims my Dad is - and has been - depressed. That is a crock. But he gets paid, and paid, and paid.

Meanwhile, while in the hospital they put a catheter in my Dad. The hospital sent him to "rehab" with it. Now there is no urologist that will visit the rehab to remove it. He will have to be transported (read ambulance) to a hospital with a urologist to have it removed. It seems that urologists make so much money in their offices prescribing Viagra - that there is not enough money involved for them to visit a patient in a retirement home.

Medicaid must be so much worse. Imagine being able to soak so many uninformed patients for all the taxpayers can bear.

Or can we?

Anyone who thinks these are "unintended" consequences maybe underestimating the insidiousness of the single payor rampup.

Remember what Obama said several years ago. Single payor is the goal. But they could not get there in one fell swoop. So they staged it.

The decimation of the health insurance industry is an "intended" consequence. It is done by requiring insurance companies to abdicate and accept uninsurables. They are forced to price insurance in an uneconomic way. This will either bankrupt the company or drive it out of business.

When the entire insurance industry is gone - what is the choice? The GOVERNMENT. Single payor is here folks, it just a wolf in sheep´s clothing and it is waiting for the appropriate time to spring.

Say goodbye to 1/6th of the economy. It has just hit an iceberg and is going down.

MOSCOW — Even as American and Russian diplomats groped toward a settlement that would halt further Russian military intervention in Ukraine, Gazprom, the Russian energy company, stepped up the economic pressure on Tuesday by sharply raising the price it charges for natural gas. Gazprom, a state-controlled gas exporter, raised the price to $385 for 1,000 cubic meters of gas, the standard measure used in gas deals in Europe, from $268, an increase of 44 percent. A senior CIA official has died in an apparent suicide this week from injuries sustained after jumping off a building in northern Virginia, according to sources close to the CIA. CIA spokesman Christopher White confirmed the death and said the incident did not take place at CIA headquarters in McLean, Va. “We can confirm that there was an individual fatally injured at a facility where agency work is done,” White told the Washington Free Beacon. “He was rushed to a local area hospital where he subsequently died. Due to privacy reasons and out of respect for the family, we are not releasing

Earlier this week on Boston’s WRKO-AM’s The Howie Carr Show, conservative commentator Ann Coulter shocked some conservatives when she said she is making 2012 Republican nominee Mitt Romney her favorite for the 2016 Republican contest. Last month in an interview on CBS’s Face the Nation, Romney himself ruled out the possibility of a 2016 run and said he was instead focused on who to get behind in that contest. Coulter, however, wishes otherwise. “Well, don´t tell him but I´m planning on giving Mitt Romney a little more time to rest -- flying out, kidnapping him and depriving him of sleep, food and

A 54-year-old white man has been left barely clinging to life after he was brutally beaten by a group of black men when he got out of his car to check on a young black boy he accidentally hit. Steve Utash, from suburban Roseville, was beaten into a coma Wednesday by an angry mob in a poverty-stricken Detroit neighborhood after David Harris, 10, ran in front of his truck on a busy street, but police insist the incident was not racially motivated. The gang also stole his wallet before leaving him for dead. Utash is in extremely critical

President Barack Obama contended that the government did not “make a hard sell” for Obamacare, despite his administration spending nearly $700 million to promote the law. “We didn’t make a hard sell,” Obama said in the Rose Garden on Tuesday, praising the 7.1 million sign ups for the Affordable Care Act. “We didn’t have billions of dollars of commercials like some critics did.” However, last July the Associated Press reported that Obamacare’s marketing campaign would cost at least $684 million. Taxpayer funding went to all 50 states in efforts to encourage people to enroll, including nearly $28 million for the

Attorney General Eric Holder disputed a Government Accountability Office report on his use of Justice Department airplanes for personal trips, saying it overstated the number of trips he took and failed to recognize that some trips were job-related. "My staff keeps telling me to take it easy, you know, well, this is one that gets me," Holder told Rep. Frank Wolf, R-Va., during a House Appropriations subcommittee hearing. "There was this notion that we´ve taken -- I think it was described as hundreds of personal trips. That was wrong. GAO counted flights, not round trips. And we looked at it

According to a report via BuzzFeed’s Evan McMorris-Santoro, President Barack Obama requested the opportunity to address the nation in prime time on the major broadcast networks on Tuesday night to announce that the Affordable Care Act had reached 7 million enrollees. Those networks did not, however, accommodate the White House’s request. “Three sources familiar with the request confirmed the White House asked for the prime time slot in their effort both to emphasize a bright moment following the challenging roll out and, more important, to try to reintroduce the country to a law that remains unpopular,”

Do you think members of Congress are overpaid or underpaid? Most likely you’d go with the former, but Democratic congressman Jim Moran argues it’s actually the latter. In an interview with CQ Roll Call, Moran says, “I think the American people should know that the members of Congress are underpaid.” The House recently took up a bill to freeze members’ paychecks, placing another halt on the annual cost-of-living pay increases they would normally get and keeping annual salary at $174,000. Moran believes that this is the wrong way to go, not necessarily talking about himself in particular, but saying there
