Delta Will Ban Calls On Planes
Even If Feds Approve Them

Associated Press, by Staff

Original Article

Posted By:mc squared, 12/19/2013 8:57:33 AM

Delta Air Lines won’t let passengers make voice calls from its planes, even if regulators allow them, it said Wednesday. The airline’s frequent fliers believe that calls in the cabin would disrupt the travel experience, CEO Richard Anderson told employees in a memo. A majority of its customers in a survey last year said the ability to make calls would make their experience worse, not better, Delta said.

Comments:
Bravo. Some sanity in the airline industry.

I love Delta. Their customer service is the very best. Yes, the industry is difficult and so many things go wrong, but Delta keeps its customers informed and the attitude is great.

Bravo! I fly mostly in the southwest and use Southwest. I hope they have the sense to adopt this policy. No one wants to sit next to a self involved boob yakking on their cell for 3 hours.

I would suggest that any airline that allows in-flight cell phone calls to update their flight crew uniforms to be modeled on the ones worn by boxing referees.

I´m gonna take the otherside of the issue here. Lots of folks could benefit from being able to conduct business via phone while in transit. How about setting up a phone use section and non phone section? Maybe charge a little extra for the phone use section.

Not everyone flying is going to see their Auntie in Des Moines.

I cannot imagine the mental h*ll of being confined in a metal tube in a seat with no leg or arm space AND having to listen to background noise of 30 or so braying jacka**es yelling on their cell phones.

“Yes, Marge! I’m calling from an AIRPLANE! Would you believe it!!!"

The roar of the engines causes a noise level that makes the cell phone user talk very loudly. It is very unpleasant to sit next to one. There should be an area where they have to go to talk. And it should have no seats. You have to stand.

Activists: De Blasio Picks
‘Not Diverse Enough’
New York Post, by Beth DeFalco    Original Article

There are plenty of things that critics can find wrong with the de Blasio administration, but a group of ministers somehow found reason to pick on one issue where City Hall has excelled: diversity. The ministers, led by the Rev. Dennis Dillon of the Brooklyn Christian Center, took to City Hall’s steps Thursday to demand that the mayor appoint more African-Americans to high-ranking positions. They claimed that by not doing so, Mayor de Blasio — who has made his biracial family a centerpiece of both his campaign and his administration — was displaying “utter disdain” toward the black community.

New Army regulations meant to help standardize and professionalize soldiers’ appearance are now coming under criticism by some black military women, who say changes in the hair requirement are racially biased. The Army earlier this week issued new appearance standards, which included bans on most twists, dreadlocks and large cornrows, all styles used predominantly by African-American women with natural hairstyles. More than 11,000 people have signed a White House petition asking President Barack Obama, the commander in chief, to have the military review the regulations to allow for “neat and maintained natural hairstyles.”

Albuquerque’s mayor said that a more than 10-hour protest over recent police shootings turned from peaceful into “mayhem,” as officers in riot gear clashed with hundreds of protesters who blocked traffic, tried to get on freeways and shouted anti-police slogans. Mayor Richard Berry said Sunday that one officer was injured, rocks were thrown and at one point protesters trapped police in a vehicle and tried to break the windows, the Albuquerque Journal reported. An Associated Press reporter saw gas canisters being thrown outside police headquarters and Albuquerque police and Bernalillo County sheriff’s deputies charging at the protesters late Sunday, which

A federal agent who shows up unannounced at a building along a Texas highway might be looking for any number of things: illicit drugs or immigration violations, say, or illegal firearms.Or fluorescent lights. Which was what the agent had in mind who walked into the Perfect Cuts salon in San Antonio last July. The lights were violating communications regulations. The agent had used signal-tracking equipment to home in on the offenders and told the owner, Ronald Bethany, that his lights emitted radio signals that interfered with an AT&T cellphone tower.

The Energy Department on Tuesday is rolling out new, improved software to help Americans measure the energy efficiency of their homes. DOE says its energy-scoring software -- called the Home Energy Scoring Tool -- is like a vehicle´s mile-per-gallon rating because it allows homeowners to compare the energy performance of their homes to other homes nationwide. It also provides homeowners with suggestions for improving their homes´ efficiency. The software is part of the government´s effort to reduce the nation´s energy consumption; but it´s also billed as a way to keep home-retrofitting going, at a time when stimulus funds for weather-proofing

President Obama commuted the sentences of eight drug offenders and pardoned 13 others — blasting the system that sent them away for lengthy terms as “unfair.” “Commuting the sentences of these eight Americans is an important step toward restoring fundamental ideals of justice and fairness,” Obama said in a statement. Each of the eight inmates whose sentences are being shortened has served at least 15 years, many after receiving mandatory minimum sentences. Obama signed a law in 2010 that brought increased parity to sentences handed out for crack-cocaine compared to powdered cocaine.

President Obama addressed the White House press corps today, announcing that with the final numbers in, Obamacare´s exchanges have attracted eight million sign-ups -- 35 percent of whom are "under the age of 35," he said. Several elements of his comments were misleading: (1) At first blush, the 35 percent stat is both significant and impressive. As recently as last month, the share of "young invincibles" signing up for plans was struggling in the 25 percent range, far short of the actuarial target of nearly 40 percent. A leap into the mid-30´s, while still shy of the goal, would constitute a major step, and would bode well for the risk pools'

Second, the Obama administration, clearly embarrassed by these lavish and frequent family vacations, stonewalls the release of records at every turn.
