Corvette breaks 200 mph

Chicago Tribune, by Robert Duffer

This will get your motor running. A 700-horsepower Hennessey C7 Corvette Stingray became the first 2014 Corvette to break the 200 mph barrier. It happened on a newly created CLOSED section of the Grand Parkway toll road outside of Houston, Texas. Highway 99 is slated to be opened to the public on Saturday. Even though Texas has the Union´s first 85 mph highway, the Hennessey team does not recommend the following video. This was a legal operation overseen by the Texas Department of Transportation and Department of Public Safety. The Hennessey C7 HPE 600, equipped with a 100 horsepower Nitrous

There is a restored 1986 Corvette sitting covered up in my garage. The tires are flat and the battery is dead, but none of the males in my family will allow me to sell it. What is it about men and Corvettes?

Before they opened SH 130 tollway south of Austin (the 85 mph tollroa; you can probably go about 110 because there´s no traffic on it), TxDOT let some guy who develops high performance cars like this test it out.

He hit 220 mph on the road, but what TxDOT really wanted to know was at what speed would you go through the toll cameras where they couldn´t capture your license plate (and bill you for the trip, as there are no toll booths on the road).

That speed ... where they lost the opportunity to catch the license plate on camera was 180 mph.

#4 writes of automatic tollbooth cameras: "That speed ... where they lost the opportunity to catch the license plate on camera was 180 mph."

Learning tidbits like that vindicates the time I spend around here! Pretty near everything worth knowing under the sun is known by someone on this site. You just assimilate it as it appears.

Timing (the run) is of the essence when a driver is plotting to flout the living hell out of speed laws, lest one kill oneself or some innocent Sunday driver who never expected to be hit from behind by some roaring meteor on four wheels, or have to face an unsympathetic judge and do time. The Spirit of Gumball yet survives! Get your motor runnin´, head out on the highway.

Me? I drive the speed limit. The constable is my friend, and he knows naught of my dreams of flying on land.

Men have an affinity for Corvettes because they are - and have always been - the premier AMERICAN sports car. Think of them as Harleys with 4 wheels. The 67 coupe sitting covered up and on blocks in my garage also has flat tires and a dead battery. Hoping to find the time to bring it back to life one of these years, but even if I don´t it´s staying in the family.

#1 First of all, you are doing your "restored" 1986 Corvette no service letting its tires go flat and your battery run down.

The battery is likely now ruined. Tires can handle only so long at flat before they are ruined, pressure on the sidewalls with no air will cause cracking, checking, and failure of the tires. So if any time has gone by, your tires are now useless too. If you want to store you car, there is a proper process including disconnecting battery, putting the car properly up on stands, and dealing with fluids.

All that said, real men like Corvettes because they allow you to enjoy the sporting side of driving, whether an early model or the later models.

If you´re a man, or woman, who think driving is nothing but ´getting from point A to point B´, you´ll never get it, so don´t try.

As long as we are being sexist and generalizing here, what is it about women and their constant worrying about their rear ends and fat, their non-stop consumption of goofy reality shows, their expensive purses, their cats, their preoccupation with why men like manly things....I could go on.....

#10, generally speaking, a short block is an engine without heads, intake and exhaust manifolds. A Chevy small block are the smaller form factor engines (typically we are talking displacement of 283-400 Cu inch) vs the "classic" Chevy big blocks of 396, 427, 454 displacement.

Chrysler was typically the 318/340/360 small blocks and the 383/426/440 big blocks.

Again, this is all generally speaking.

#11, yes I know about the ruined tires and battery, but it is not my vehicle, just an annoyance. And, when I referred to it as restored, I didn´t mean a big project, just new seat covers and carpet. It had been well taken care of, one owner, my son. He got it for his 25th birthday and that was a long time ago. When the son started a family, the ´vette was too small. Hence, my garage.

My personal best on 4 wheels was 145 in a 2001 Corvette Z06. Could have gone faster but was running out of road.

On 2 wheels, it was 153 on my 1999 Triumph Daytona 955. This was on 190 (Bush Freeway) in Dallas, going west after entering from central Expressway.

These days I drive a Jeep :-)

Some aerodynamically poor helmets will start to float at 120 mph. A Buell can do more but that floating helmet makes one nervous.

New helmets are better.

had some fun in Germany (took the rental back to Hertz and noted that it would only do 226Kph with 5 adults...)

on two wheels;
many moons ago, topped off the tank in Gorman (South of Tejon Pass) on I5 a bit before 2am, was passing through Rohnert Park at 6AM - with stops in Kettleman City where a CHP pulled in after I had stopped for a cup of tea, gassed up and was checking for lose bits and was asking me about the bike and informed me that I had passed him "a ways back" and that he would just let the birds find the bits if I lost it...

the Vincent would do an honest 150Mph+ only don´t turn your head, don´t change you body position and when it hit the end of the main tank at speed you´d best suck in the compression release before attempting to hit the reserve tank!

President Obama on Friday said that Republicans were behind the biggest threat to voting rights in decades. “The principle of one person, one vote is the single greatest tool we have to redress an unjust status quo. You would think there would not be an argument about this anymore,” said Obama in an address to Rev. President Reagan was holding a meeting in the Cabinet Room on March 25, 1985, when Press Secretary Larry Speakes came over to me, as communications director, with a concern. The White House was about to issue a statement on the killing of Major Arthur Nicholson, a U.S. army officer serving in East Germany. Maj. Nicholson had been shot in cold blood by a Russian soldier. Speakes thought the president´s statement, "This violence was unjustified," was weak. I agreed. We interrupted the president, who reread the statement, then said go ahead with it. The Obamas made a total of $59,251 in charitable contributions in 2013 — 12.3 percent of their income — but most of the donations went to primarily secular organizations. From their adjusted gross income of $481,098, the president and first lady gave $1,500 to St. John’s Church, an Episcopalian parish near the White House where they occasionally attend services. Instead of getting to work on my own tax return, I´d rather look at President Barack Obama´s. So the White House did me a favor by releasing the 2013 joint federal income tax return of Barack and Michelle Obama Friday afternoon. Here are some highlights: • The Obamas paid $98,169 in total federal income tax on adjusted gross income of $481,098. That´s an effective tax rate of 20.4 percent. • The Obamas are due a tax refund of $19,108. What should they spend it on? • Besides his salary, Obama reported $104,809 in business income from book sales. That´s down

Following the massacre of grammar-school children in Newtown, Conn., in December 2012, high-powered weapons have been used to kill innocent victims in more senseless public incidents. Those killings, however, are only a fragment of the total harm caused by the misuse of firearms. Each year, more than 30,000 people die in the United States in firearm-related incidents. Many of those deaths involve handguns. The adoption of rules that will lessen the number of those incidents should be a matter of primary concern to both federal and state legislators.
