India outraged by strip-search
of diplomat in NYC

USA Today, by Oren Dorell

The U.S. State Department was scrambling to tamp down Indian outrage over the arrest of a diplomat in New York City who says she was stripped- and cavity-searched over charges that she didn´t pay her housekeeper enough money. "We don´t want this to negatively impact our bilateral relationship (with India), and we´ll keep talking about it with them on the ground and here," said Marie Harf, deputy spokeswoman at the State Department.

That´s the ticket. Let´s hassle diplomats for lying on visa application on what they´re paying their maid. That´s more fun than deporting criminal illegal aliens.

Stupid Indians - don´t they realize that this is a police state in which an arrest means bing strip searched - especially if you are a cute female?

Chalk up another ´unforced error´ for our State Dept.

Who´s job will it be to tell Barky that these people have nuclear weapons ?

What happened to diplomatic immunity ?

Why pick a fight with India of all places ?

This diplomat is (a) female (b) a PhD (c) of ´Dalit´ caste (untouchable, a protected class). She was arrested on a public street, put in handcuffs, then forced to strip and subjected to cavity searches and then locked for the night with drug addicts and common prostitutes.
This is equivalent of publicly referring to Valerie Jarrett and Michelle 0bama with the N&B words. Government and the entire political establishment would go ballistic.
This is exactly what has happened. It is not going to go away by ignoring it.

She did not have full diplomatic immunity. She lied on a visa application, which like it or not, is a crime. The idea that this incident is an insult to all women in India, means that Indians sure have a short memory for the recent, and apparently continuing, bus rapes that happened in their country. Insult to all Indian women, no. Insult to India diplomatically, yes. A little heads up would be nice or diplomatic courtesy to deny the application and politely inform her that she might want to think about going back to India with her tail between her legs. It does seem to speak to how the current administration approaches international and diplomatic affairs, however. An apology is in order, but we may not have seen the last of this if the maid has some other damning info.

Whether she had diplomatic immunity or consular immunity is a mute point. She was an official of the Indian government serving in the US at the behest of her nation and she was entitled to all diplomatic protections afforded American diplomats in India. The fact that the State Department Security and then the US Marshalls Service were involved in this outrage is beyond comprehension. Both entities should have known better. Furthermore to subject her to a strip search and incarceration over a dispute related to payments to a maid is off the charts. The Indian government should expel all American diplomats from India immediately and demand nothing less than an apology for this incident from Barack Obama. Anyone who has ever served in a diplomatic capacity knows that immunity is a sacrosanct concept. I am beyond appalled that we did this to this woman.

Further to what # 10 said...If she lied on her visa application this is an official matter between the US government and the Indian government. It is not up to Diplomatic Security or the US Marshall´s Service to arrest her. If her offense is serious then she can be PNG´ed out of the US. I reiterate, diplomatic immunity is sacrosanct. You violate it at your peril. Every American dip in India right now is at risk because of this stupid act. It is inexcusable. Period! End of debate!

There are several gay US diplomats in India who have applied for and received companion visas for their partners. Under Indian law recently upheld by the country´s Supreme Court, homosexuality is crime punishable by 10 years imprisonment. Over 70% of the sovereign member states of the UN have similar laws.
What if the Indians decided to enforce THEIR law as selectively as we enforce our visa laws? This is already being discussed in India´s parliament.

Why should the USA get involved with what an Indian diplomat is paying an Indian domestic servant attached to an Indian diplomatic mission that is located here as the result of a consular agreement between the Indian and US Governments? It seems like that should be something for the Indian courts and government to handle.

Anytime you arrest a foreign diplomat you can bet that it will eventually turn to crap, it is just that this case turned quicker than most.

The New Mexico Supreme Court is cautioning the state´s trial courts that citizens who don´t speak English have the right to serve on juries. The court issued the admonition in a ruling that upholds an Albuquerque man´s convictions for murder and other crimes in the bludgeoning death of his girlfriend and a subsequent armed robbery and stabbing. Michael Samora's appeal argued that his convictions should be reversed because the Bernalillo County court excused a Spanish-speaking prospective juror who had trouble understanding English.

The GOP´s chances of winning the White House in 2016 are linked more closely to the political fortunes of New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie than those of Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida. Rubio is the Tea Party wunderkind who was tapped by Republicans to give the GOP response to President Obama's State of the Union Address. He began his retort with a dusted off reference to his parents' emigration from Cuba to the United States. During his political ascendancy in Florida, Rubio often talked of how his mom and dad fled that Caribbean island after Fidel Castro came to power in 1959.

President Obama is considering asking Sen. John F. Kerry (D-Mass.) to serve as his next defense secretary, part of an extensive rearrangement of his national security team that will include a permanent replacement for former CIA director David H. Petraeus. Although Kerry is thought to covet the job of secretary of state, senior administration officials familiar with the transition planning said that nomination will almost certainly go to Susan E. President Obama´s remarks today about the so-called "fiscal cliff" set the stage for a showdown with Congress likely to last for the next few months. Obama set one line in the sand: revenue. He announced that he would compromise with Republicans, but would not give up his insistence that high-income Americans pay more taxes as part of any long-term deficit solution. Interestingly, Obama´s remarks were not predicated on the assumption that the two sides would strike a deal before January. In fact he assumed they would not, and his message was designed to be repeated through the new year.

For the first time ever, researchers at Northwestern University have analyzed the relationship between casual use of marijuana and brain changes – and found that young adults who used cannabis just once or twice a week showed significant abnormalities in two important brain structures. The study’s findings, to be published Wednesday in the Journal of Neuroscience, are similar to those of past research linking chronic, long-term marijuana use with mental illness and changes in brain development. But in a second test, when one researcher favoured a white recipient over an Asian one, they picked the ‘fair’ researcher less often, the journal Frontiers in Psychology reports. How do you ensure that you won’t be ostracized, denounced, or fired if you are a media celebrity, captain of industry, or high public official? For some, sexist banter is certainly no problem. Stand-up comedian Bill Maher called Sarah Palin a c–t and a tw-t, but suffered no ill consequences. David Letterman joked on air that Sarah Palin’s 14-year-old daughter had had sex with Alex Rodriguez during a New York Yankees game. There was no downside to that either. President Obama tosses around “sweetie” as he wishes. No problem with that. No one believes Barack could be condescending to women.
