Haiti Faults Orphanage Run

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti -- At the Olde Good Things antique store on Manhattan´s Upper West Side, a French crystal chandelier can go for tens of thousands of dollars. A marble mantel sells for more than $20,000 and hand-carved dinner tables are priced even higher. The store´s Christian missionary owners offer their well-heeled customers a heart-warming story: Part of the proceeds pay for the group´s orphanage in Haiti, one of the poorest countries in the world. What they don´t say is that even though they claim in IRS filings to be spending around $2.5 million annually, the home for boys and girls was

Haiti has received way too much help already. Haiti needs to take care of their own business. All the help and money they have received has left them far too dependent.

A little "google" research on the "Church of Bible Understanding" will raise several red flags about its legitimacy.

The AP uses a verbatim bit from Wikipedia about the "church" in this column.

Dealing with Michelle Obama’s

Like most ultra-important offices in Washington as well as most cable news networks, commenting on-the-record is frowned upon. Off-the-record is off-the-record and even using the phrase off-the-record is considered off-the-record if you know what I mean. But this week a few Washington journalists exposed what happened when they approached the first lady Michelle Obama‘s press office for information. There’s an aspect of this that is quite impressive. They didn’t play the game. They didn’t worry about future access, undoubtedly a rarity in Washington among the Fourth Estate. SiriusXM’s Julie Mason, who hosts “Press Pool,” told The Mirror a story that things definitely

Even in the midst of the Chinese finding something new floating in the ocean, questions continue to swirl around what happened to flight 370. CNN’s Jake Tapper had an interview this morning regarding the release of what is alleged to be the transcript of the cockpit communications from the flight, and it might shed a little more light on the mystery. (Snip)This transcript brings us right back to that short, curious communication from the cockpit right at the end of transmissions… All right, good night. But it wasn’t until we saw the transcript that something potentially odd stood out about

How the Senate landscape has shifted

We´ve written a lot in recent weeks about how the Senate map is looking better and better for Republicans. Recruiting, the mood of the electorate and a wave of outside spending from the Koch brothers-backed group Americans for Prosperity have combined to make for a landscape that looks riper and riper for a GOP takeover. One way to look at the state of play is to compare it to a year ago. Thanks to Robert Blizzard at the Republican firm Public Opinion Strategies, we can do just that. The following chart details the movement between March 2013 and now in states

Quoting unnamed administration officials, CNN host Jake Tapper revealed that the White House is “concerned” that Russia could invade South and East Ukraine “possibly as soon as this weekend.” He said that, in spite of Russia’s assurances that the large numbers of troops and military equipment amassed along the Ukrainian border are there merely for training exercises, the White House believes that Moscow could be planning a broader incursion into Ukraine. “There is now real apprehension that Vladimir Putin could push even further into Ukraine, perhaps as soon as this weekend,” Tapper said. WASHINGTON – It´s not a glitzy job. In fact, it´s kind of boring. But these days, the Office of the Surgeon General is at the center of a political storm -- as Republicans stall the president´s pick for the post of America´s top doc. The controversy over nominee Vivek Murthy, though, raises two questions: Who would he replace, and does America even need a surgeon general anymore? The answer to the first question is Rear Adm. Boris Lushniak, not a household name since his appointment by President Obama last July. But the answer to the second question is open for debate. While the title

But they´re refusing to turn over details about its use or heavily censoring files when they do. Police say Stingray, a suitcase-size device that pretends it´s a cell tower, is useful for catching criminals, but that´s about all they´ll say. For example, they won´t disclose details about contracts with the device´s manufacturer, Harris Corp., insisting they are protecting both police tactics and commercial secrets. Nobody was surprised when Attorney General Eric Holder decided the special prosecutor requested by Sen. Ted Cruz to investigate the IRS scandal isn´t needed. Why? Because Holder and his boss in the Oval Office refuse to make the same mistake that led to Richard Nixon´s undoing in the Watergate scandal. Nixon allowed his attorney general to name a special prosecutor to investigate Watergate, confident that his Justice Department loyalists could contain any ensuing damage. But Nixon miscalculated and it ended disastrously for him with the infamous Saturday Night Massacre. Nixon fired special prosecutor Archibald Cox, thus precipitating resignations from Attorney

Another day, another unwelcome poll for the White House. Pew reports that Hispanic support for Obamacare has lurched downwards from 60-plus percent in September 2013 to 47 percent. That matters a lot, because it possibly means there’s less chance that the GOP’s campaign against Obamacare will prompt the large Hispanic turnout that President Barack Obama needs in November to keep Sen. Harry Reid in charge of the Senate. So far, Democrats have expected Latinos’ support for Obamacare will help them vote Democratic in November. But the poll showing tepid support for Obamacare might force Obama to spend more time and money pushing Obamacare up

Jimmy Carter has been very active in the decades since his presidency, and his successors have occasionally called for his advice. Except, it turns out, the current occupant of the office. A clip from Carter’s upcoming Meet the Press interview reveals that President Obama is the first president since Carter left office not to solicit the Southern Democrat’s advice. Carter explained, “President Clinton did and President George W. Bush and H.W. Bush and even Ronald Reagan used to call on us to go into sensitive areas.” They all asked Carter to deal with “unsavory characters,” but Obama hasn’t reached out to

Is Barack Obama simply too busy to be Chief Executive of the United States? Apparently. One of the primary functions of the president is to keep the nation safe, to preserve it from its enemies. To do that effectively, one would actually have to maintain something of a consistent level of attention to the moving pieces that directly influence how future events will unfold. None other than the truly sycophantic thinks for a second that President Obama cares a whit for anything that does not involve fundamentally altering the social composition of this country. Or golf. Even worse, one of the writers behind the story is married to a political operative in the left wing Koch-demonization machine. The Washington Post was recently purchased by Jeff Bezos of Amazon, who ought to take a hard look at the reporters and editors who collaborated with the left wing smear machine, and while he is at it, should send a note of thanks to John Hinderaker, the blogger

According to the Miami-Herald, Bush made his remarks in front of business leaders in Florida. “People who come here legally and illegally are the risk takers,” Bush reportedly said. “If you’re living in a rural area of Guatemala and you come, you’re a bigger risk taker than those who stay,” he added. Of course, the first action of those who come to the country illegally is breaking the law. Bush also said he

Now that Michelle Obama’s mother has caused a disruption on the latest exotic vacation for the first lady, perhaps it is time for some answers about why Marian Robinson is even on the trip to China. Black students are more likely to be suspended from U.S. public schools — even as tiny preschoolers. The racial disparities in American education, from access to high-level classes and experienced teachers to discipline, were highlighted in a report released Friday by the Education Department´s civil rights arm. The suspensions — and disparities — begin at the earliest grades. Black children represent about 18 percent of children in preschool programs in schools, but they make up almost half of the preschoolers who are suspended more than once, the report said. Six percent of the nation´s districts with preschools reported suspending at
