JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Students at a Florida high school named after an honorary Ku Klux Klan leader say they are happy that their school will soon be renamed. Students at Nathan B. Forrest High School in Jacksonville say it´s high time for the Confederate general´s name at the majority black school to be removed. That will happen next year after a new name is selected. Tenth grader De'jia Boatwright said she is glad the controversy is over. School Superintendent Nikolai Vitti said students voted overwhelmingly in a survey to rename the school because of Forrest's history as a slave trader and historical reports of his order to kill 300 captured black Union soldiers.

Comments:
I would guess everything named "Byrd" should be changed, also.

For his time, he was the most brilliant cavalry commander in either army. I doubt if they ´splained that to the little tykes, though.

If the FBI would release the Martin Luther King, Jr. files there´d be some changes to attitudes about his icon status.

Nathan Bedford Forrest was one of the greatest Generals in the Confederacy. He never made a tactical error, which cannot be said about Jackson, or Lee. As I recall, Forrest was not the originator of the KKK, which was started by former slave-owner southern Democrats.

This will drastically improve the behavior of blacks - Confederate symbols are the reason young blacks do poorly in school and commit crimes - but its not enough - society must make sure that nothing remotely offensive ever comes into a black person range of hearing or field of vision. Presidents that owned slaves must not be mentioned in history books and black presidents must not be criticized.

The Laura LaMar school district in SW Pa near Pittsburgh was named by the city fathers to honor a nurse from the civil war.
But then someone discovered that Laura was a camp follower - hooker - and they dropped Laura and renamed it the Homer Center School District.
I thought they should have kept Laura LaMar as an honor for her vital service to the troops...

Montgomery AL has two large high schools that were formally all white and are now essentially all black.. They are named after Robert E. Lee and Jefferson Davis. My guess is one will eventually be renamed after Rosa Parks, the other? Obama? Harriet Tubman? Joe Louis?

As to #8´s comment - Robert E. Lee released all of his slaves 10 years before the war. He inherited them from his father in-law. However, General Grant kept his three slaves until 1865 when MO ended slavery.

I attended this school from its opening in 1959 until I moved in 1962. It was all white then and included grades 7-12. We students had been told we could name the school ourselves, including team names and school colors. A vigorous campaign ensued and the winner, hands down, was Valhalla High School, team name Vikings, colors orange and white. Football jerseys were ordered, Viking logos were created, signs posted everywhere and enthusiasm for our new school was over the moon.

Then, at a hastily called meeting, the old bats of the United Daughters of the Confederacy informed us all that the name was to be General Nathan Bedford Forrest Junior Senior High School. The team name was the Rebels, colors red and grey. We even had a school flag now; yep, the Confederate Southern Cross.

We students were angry. We had been betrayed by a bunch of bitter old biddies still fighting the Civil War of a century before. School spirit was non-existent and it took a long time for any kind of allegiance to form.

I wanted to set the record straight for how this school came to be named and thought my fellow L.dotters would be interested.

Kind of ironic. I read somewhere that after the war, Forrest owned/ran a railroad, and his company was the only one that would hire blacks at anything like wage/opportunity for advancement parity with whites. I seem to recall that when the KKK turned from a benevolent association for ex-confederates into a terrorist organization, Forrest renounced and denounced it. But you can´t expect modern high-school kids, of any color, to understand that much detailed history I guess.

Yes Forrest was racist and, by some accounts, mean. But that´s only part of his story. He was the best cavalry man the south had. He was ususally daring and unconventional. He usually won with 1/2 what the other side had. He was instrumental in forming the Klan but stepped away when it turned violent. His involvment in Ft Pillow has some questions. By some accounts his troops had already left.

But let´s rewrite history to promote "self-esteem.

It´s also costing $400K to change all the various Forrest signs/team uniforms/labels, etc.

A Virginia company has filed suit after its construction of a monument in Alabama honoring a noted Confederate general, who also was a member of the Ku Klux Klan, was halted. According to the Selma Times-Journal, the federal suit, filed by KTK Mining of Richmond, says the company got the necessary permits to do the work on the monument in Old Live Oak Cemetery honoring Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest, but the city of Selma, Ala., suspended the permits when the project drew protests. The company's suit says the suspension was done without prior notice to KTK Mining.

Former Florida governor Jeb Bush said Sunday that he will base his decision on whether to run for president in 2016 on whether he thinks he can mount a campaign that would transcend the modern-day mechanics of such a run. Kathryn Riffenburg decided on a closed casket for her baby´s funeral. She didn´t want her family to see what whooping cough, her son´s first illness, had done to 9-week-old Brady Alcaide. The nearly forgotten disease, which has in recent years afflicted thousands of Americans, left Brady´s tiny body swollen and unrecognizable. So his mother dressed him in a white baptismal suit and hat and tucked him into a tiny white casket. Brady´s burial came just four weeks after his first laugh — inspired by her version of I´m a Little Teapot — and two weeks after his family learned that he had

Rev. Al Shaprton, the controversial civil rights leader-turned-broadcaster, was a confidential FBi informant for years and helped the feds put members of the Genovese and Gambino organized crime families behind bars, it was revealed Monday in a sensational exposé. President Barack Obama will speak this week for the second time at the annual meeting of Sharpton´s National Action Network, raising questions about the group´s special treatment. Sharpton´s special relationship with the Justice Department may also explain why his NAN has been allowed to skirt responsibility for $1.9 million in back taxes and penalties it has owed the IRS since 2006

Democrats are facing a senior problem that could get even worse this year. The party has traditionally had trouble with older voters, losing the group aged 65 and over by 21 points in 2010 — when Republicans picked up 63 seats — and by 12 points in the 2012 presidential race. Seniors are the GOP’s most reliable voting bloc in midterm years, turning out in higher numbers than Democratic base voters. A recent Gallup poll showed seniors have become even more Republican over the last two decades; in 2013, 48 percent considered themselves Republican. That spells trouble for Democrats, who are already facing

When friends and family members gathered recently at the White House for a private celebration of Michelle Obama’s 50th birthday, one of the invited partygoers was a former paid FBI Mafia informant. That same man attended February’s state dinner in honor of French President Francois Hollande. He was seated with his girlfriend at a table adjacent to President Barack Obama, who is likely unaware that, according to federal agents, his guest once interacted with members of four of New York City’s five organized crime families. He even secretly taped some of those wiseguys using a briefcase that FBI technicians outfitted

LONDON - Peaches Geldof, the wild-child second daughter of concert organizer Bob Geldof who worked as a model, a television presenter and a fashion writer and filled the pages of British tabloids with her late-night antics, has died at age 25. There was no immediate word on the cause of her death at her home in Wrotham, Kent, southeast England. Her father said in a statement Monday: "Peaches has died. We are beyond pain." "She was the wildest, funniest, cleverest, wittiest and the most bonkers of all of us," he said. "Writing 'was' destroys me afresh. What a beautiful child. How is this possible that we will not see her again? How is that bearable? We loved her and will cherish her forever."

A married freshman Republican congressman who campaigned on his Christian, conservative values apologized Monday after surveillance video surfaced purportedly showing him in a lengthy liplock with a staffer. In the Dec. 23 footage, obtained by a local newspaper, Rep. Vance McAllister, R-La. - who ahead of his election last fall ran multiple campaign ads trumpeting his faith and family - is seen kissing and embracing a woman for about 20 seconds at his Monroe, La., district office. Call it the million-worker mystery. A large chunk of American adults are no longer in the labor force. That has left economists divided over how many of them are voluntarily not working-or even looking for work-because they wanted to retire, go to school or take care of family members, versus how many have been forced out because they couldn´t find a job. (snip) Shierholz estimates that there are currently more than 5 million missing workers who are not included in the unemployment rate because they are neither working nor looking for work, but who might be if the job market
