Madison, Aghast?
New York Sun, by Editorial

Original Article

“Aghast” is the word that a United States district judge uses to describe how the author of the Constitution, James Madison, would react to the collection of metadata by the National Security Agency. The judge, Richard Leon, whose court is in the Columbia District, says he “cannot imagine a more ‘indiscriminate’ and ‘arbitrary invasion’ than this systematic and high-tech collection and retention of personal data on virtually every single citizen for purposes of querying and analyzing it without prior judicial approval. Surely, such a program infringes on ‘that degree of privacy’ that the Founders enshrined in the Fourth Amendment. Indeed,

Yes, yes, yes and yes! But Madison is a long dead white guy most Americans either don´t know of or give a rip about.

Morning Joe host Joe Scarborough was won over by Texas Governor (still?) Rick Perry’s interview with Jimmy Kimmel the other night, praising the segment as the first time he’d seen Perry’s “infectious personality,” so often on display in private, expressed publicly—causing guest Chris Matthews to warn against the perils of being charmed in person by ambitious politicians. “Sometimes, it’s dangerous to meet these people,” Matthews said. “I like to keep a little distance. When you meet them, you meet the nice person who is also talking to you, Joe Scarborough. Never forget that: he’s talking to you, and he knows

Talking to Donald Trump on Thursday´s NBC Today, co-host Matt Lauer complained about the Celebrity Apprentice host and CPAC speaker criticizing President Obama´s poor handling of the Ukranian crisis: "You´ve been critical of the President and his handling of the situation with Ukraine and Crimea. I think you said, I´m paraphrasing here, but basically Putin was playing with or toying with Obama. That is kind of a common refrain of yours....you always think that Obama is being weak." The son of former New Jersey Gov. Jon Corzine has died, The Post has learned. Jeffrey Corzine, who friends said worked as a drug counselor in California, was just 31. Details of his death were not immediately known. “Mr. Corzine is obviously devastated by this tragic loss,” said his spokesman, Steven Goldberg. “We ask that all respect his family’s privacy during this very difficult time.” The youngest of the former politician’s three children with ex-wife Joanne Corzine, Jeff also had launched a fledgling photography website. He was a constant by his father’s side in the days after the former governor’s near-fatal car crash in 2007.

Gosnell abortion clinic employee Sherry West, who described how she heard a baby scream during a live-birth abortion, has been sentenced to 5-10 years in prison for her role in the “House of Horrors” abortion clinic incidents. West described an incident which “really freaked (her) out” and related to the jury how she heard a child scream who was born alive following an abortion. West remembered how she referred to the dead children killed in these gruesome abortion procedures as “specimens” so she could avoid the mental trauma associated with knowing how they died. The Obama team quietly gives up

It turns out the Obama team has delayed the individual mandate to buy health insurance — though the announcement was quiet and roundabout, to minimize the embarrassment. What we’re left with is a US health-care system whose engine has been partly disassembled — and a mechanic who doesn’t know how to make his plan for rebuilding it actually work, even as he insists we’re already better off. The Wall Street Journal editorial page broke the news Wednesday: In a technical bulletin, the Health and Human Services Department carved out new exemptions from the mandate. “In a word,” the Journal writes,

Last year, Susan Patton, a Princeton grad and the mother of two sons at the elite college, outraged feminists when she wrote an open letter to the Daily Princetonian telling female students to find a husband on campus before they graduate. The red alert — which argued that these Ivy League college girls “would never again be surrounded by this concentration of men who would be worthy of you” — went viral with more than 100 million hits. Now Patton, an independent HR consultant who lives on Manhattan’s Upper East Side and who’s been dubbed “Princeton Mom,” has capitalized on her fame

The White House insists it doesn’t know how many people are fully enrolled in Obamacare, but insurers say they’ve handed over enough data to show that the sign-up numbers are not as rosy as federal officials say. The latest administration figures show that 4.2 million people have selected health plans in the new insurance markets. Insurance industry officials at four of the big national health plans tell POLITICO that about 15 to 20 percent of people who have signed up have not yet paid their first monthly premium — the final step to get coverage.

Business groups and congressional Republicans are blasting regulations President Obama will announce Thursday that could extend overtime pay to as many as 10 million workers who are now ineligible for it. While liberals lauded the plan as putting more cash in the pockets of millions of workers, business groups warned it would damage the economy and Republicans said it was another example of executive overreach. Trade associations already battling the White House over a proposal to raise the minimum wage to $10.10 per hour said they were blindsided by the announcement. “This came as a shot out of the blue,” said David

A year ago, Chris Christie would have had to buy a ticket to CPAC. You´d think he might be even less popular this year, coming off the bruising battle over the George Washington Bridge scandal. But the New Jersey governor got an invite from the premiere conservative conference in Washington--by definition a crowd that is somewhat cool to him, and used it to smack the media and what he called a "dysfunctional" Congress. It´s hardly a shocker that after being pounded by the press for a couple of months, Christie is no fan of a journalistic establishment that once doted on him. "We have

SEPANG, Malaysia — After four days of reticence and evasive answers, the Malaysian military acknowledged on Wednesday that it had recorded, but initially ignored, radar signals that could have prompted a mission to intercept and track a missing jetliner — data that vastly expands the area where the plane might have traveled. Radar signals from the location where the missing aircraft, Malaysia Airlines Flight 370, was last contacted by ground controllers suggested that the plane may have turned away from its northeastward course toward Beijing, officials said. Military radar then detected an unidentified aircraft at several points, apparently headed west across

There are no silver linings to Mayor de Blasio’s ham-fisted attacks on charter schools, but his strange behavior is providing clarity in several key ways. First, the attacks illustrate how important charters have become. What started as an experiment with a few schools has grown into a genuine movement, one that is thrusting New York into the forefront of educational reform. The actual size of the charter footprint is small — only 70,000 students out of more than 1 million in the city. But the stakes couldn’t be higher, because if charters can make it here, they can make it

How would you feel if a police officer you knew for 20 years told you that if an order were issued to confiscate your guns, he wouldn’t hesitate to “kick your door in”? This was the precisely the experience Connecticut resident, Navy veteran and former firefighter John Cinque had after commenting on his state’s 2013 violation of the Second Amendment. The law in question criminalizes the sale of magazines holding more than 10 rounds and also certain semi-automatic rifles, and mandates that all grandfathered weapons and magazines must be registered with the state. A report released Tuesday by the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform asserted that ex-IRS official Lois Lerner waived her Fifth Amendment rights. Lerner continues to stonewall California Rep. Darrell Issa’s committee, pleading the Fifth again in a divisive Oversight hearing last Wednesday convened to get to the bottom of the IRS’ improper targeting of conservative groups between 2010 and 2012. Oversight member Rep. Jim Jordan told The Daily Caller that the committee is “moving” toward holding Lerner in contempt of Congress to compel her to testify. “I think that’s where we’re moving,” Jordan said. “I think that’s where this is headed.”
