Some days bring up an assortment of news that can only be called a snapshot of the times. No common thread runs through them except a kind of spirit of the age. It’s a day in the life, bringing both good and bad. The first snippet is news that the fake sign language interpreter present at the Mandela funeral was once part of a group that burned people to death. “They told The Associated Press that the group placed tires around the men’s necks and set them ablaze. Unlike two other suspects who went to trial in 2006 for the

Comments:
Historical facts never repeat precisely, but the same themes recur each generation because in mankind´s heart of hearts the same weaknesses and desires still inhere.

The phony ANC sign language interpreter who got within an arm´s length--an arm´s length!of the American president appears to have participated in Winnie Mandela´s favorite sport of "necklacing," but wasn´t tried because apparently he wasn´t mentally fit to stand trial. As Ben Stein once said, "Wow."

Nelson Mandela, it must be noted, had the good sense to divorce the bloodthirsty ANC pyromaniac Winnie. And speaking of necklacing, you might be able to guess the last words ever heard by the typical South African necklacing victim as the gasoline filled inner tube around his neck is lit: "Have a Goodyear!"

I have a feeling that even if the Secret Service knew of this man´s violent past and his mental illness, if they had tried to get him removed, they would have been hit with cries of racism.

The press reports that thousands of Muslims are fleeing killings in Central African Republic, hunted by Christians. (Snip) Their differences are explained away in terms straight out of Oprah: ‘religious bigotry’, ‘lack of understanding’, insufficient ‘love for your country’ etc, instead of what they really are: the vicissitudes of conquest, the maintenance of identity, the lure of greed and the imperatives of survival. This fairytale stuff is peddled because nobody wants to open the real can of worms: regional rivalries, the spread of al-Qaeda in Africa, the collapse of African states or the sordid competition by great powers for diamonds,

Obama’s Foreign Policy: Enemy Action

It’s often hard to determine whether a series of bad policies results from stupidity or malicious intent. Occam’s razor suggests that the former is the more likely explanation, as conspiracies assume a high degree of intelligence, complex organization, and secrecy among a large number of people, qualities that usually are much less frequent than the simple stupidity, disorganization, and inability to keep a secret more typical of our species. Yet surveying the nearly 6 years of Obama’s disastrous foreign policy blunders, I’m starting to lean towards Goldfinger’s Chicago mob-wisdom: “Once is happenstance. Twice is coincidence. Three times, it’s enemy action.”

MIDDLESBORO — Snake-handling preacher Jamie Coots, who never backed away from his beliefs despite derision, criminal charges and excruciating bites, died Saturday night after being bitten by a rattlesnake during a church service. Family members of Coots, 42, refused medical treatment for him. He was pronounced dead about two hours after the rattler sank its fangs into his right hand. His son said the poison overwhelmed his father within minutes of the bite. "It was the quickest snakebite I ever seen in my life," Coots´ son, Cody, said Sunday. Jamie Coots´ death appears to be the first from a snakebite

A giant solar-power project officially opening this week in the California desert is the first of its kind, and may be among the last, in part because of growing evidence that the technology it uses is killing birds. (Snip) BrightSource wants to build a second tower-based solar farm in California´s Riverside County, east of Palm Springs. But the state Energy Commission in December proposed that the company instead use more conventional technologies, such as solar panels or mirrored troughs. One reason: the BrightSource system appears to be scorching birds that fly through the intense heat surrounding the towers, which can

TAMPA — Everything was fine on the roller coaster - at first. Every seat was taken on the Cheetah Hunt ride at Busch Gardens at about 2:30 p.m. The 16 people on board, ranging from teenagers to those in their 70s, braced themselves for the rush that comes with defying gravity. Then, unexpectedly, the ride stopped, with the cars about 60 feet up in the air. The ride operator tried to nudge the cars back to their station, but that didn’t work. To make matters worse, a storm was heading toward the park. For one of the few times in

That means the makers of the equipment Schumacher was using, the manufacturer of the helmet he was wearing and the authorities who put up signage on the slopes around the rocky off-piste slopes near Meribel will effectively be cleared of any involvement in the

A sport-utility vehicle may have driven four miles or more in the wrong direction on Interstate 275 before crashing head-on into a car carrying four University of South Florida fraternity members and killing them. Troopers today were reviewing evidence from the horrific wreck, which also killed the driver of the SUV. Who he is and why he was driving the wrong way early Sunday morning remained unanswered questions. One key to the answers: Which entrance onto the interstate did the driver take to end up going south in the northbound lanes — or did he make a U-turn across the

Why Hillary Clinton´s past is

There´s a debate going on about Hillary Clinton´s past. If she runs for president in 2016, should Republicans reach back to the scandals of her years as First Lady? Or should they focus on more recent times, especially her tenure as Secretary of State, to build a case against her? The GOP doesn´t have to choose. Of course Clinton´s recent experiences are relevant to a presidential run. But so are her actions in the 90s, the 80s and even the 70s. It´s not ancient history; it reveals something about who Clinton was and still is. And re-examining her past is entirely consistent with practices in recent campaigns. In the 2012 presidential race,

America’s Founding Fathers fiercely held to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness—values which Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) claimed align seamlessly with Obamacare. Pelosi explained why the law is “very sound policy” during a press conference Friday: To go to back to our founders once again, they sacrificed it all for life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. This law, the affordable care act, is about a healthier life, the liberty to pursue your happiness. That is solid policy, and the mandate is central to that. The Clarion Project has unearthed Federal Bureau of Investigations documents detailing a 22-site network of terrorist training villages sprawled across the United States. The weirdest thing about John Kerry´s weekend speech on climate-change—other than the fact that this is the same guy who in 1997 voted to forbid the U.S. from signing the Kyoto Protocol—is that it begins by quoting something Maurice Strong said at the U.N.´s 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro: "Every bit of evidence I´ve seen persuades me that we are on a course leading to tragedy." Maurice who? Mr. Strong, a former oil executive from Canada (he was Pierre Trudeau´s pick to run state-owned Petro-Canada in the mid-1970s), was for many years the U.N.´s ultimate mandarin.
