Orthodox Jews took their best swing at would-be “knockout” thugs Sunday, in the basement of a Queens synagogue.(snip)The group of about 30 people, ranging in age from 16 to 62, were given basic instruction in the Israeli martial art of krav maga as part of a self-defense course taught at the Young Israel of Queens Valley Synagogue in Kew Gardens. The instructor, Avraham Avramcheyiv, also counseled students to pay attention to their surroundings — and spend less time texting on their smart phones or fussing with groceries. “The knockout game is a terrible thing, but not a lot of people know about

Smart move. They have been targeted too many times with this new "game." News People, please stop calling it a game as it is not a game; it is unprovoked, violent assault against unarmed and vulnerable people.

I got a real delight out of a would be knockout artist who ended up in the hospital. He picked on a young lady who had just got out of the Marines and was a martial arts instructor.

What do you think are the odds that a group of Orthodox Jews would without provocation beat a black gay man? I wonder if there were any witnesses.

The "odds" are zero. Jews don´t beat up blacks -- it is the other way around.

Eric Adams is just another racial hustler -- i.e., another Rev. Al Sharpton.

Krav Maga is awesome indeed. There are only three ´levels´ to attain and it can be devastating in a ´stand your ground if attacked but run to fight another day´ kind of way.

Back in 2005 I attained the first level of defense after a grueling 2 hr test. I wanted to continue to the next two levels but the course schedule offered at the gym (CORE Louisville) was not flexible Enough to make adjustments with my family schedule. I also suffered an eye injury while sparring (I thought I ended up with a detached retina. It IS intense.)

Most likely I don’t remember the basic moves and positions, so I’d definitely need a refresher – but it was the most intense workout I’ve ever done (I was drenched in sweat just warming up during the first 10 minutes of the hour-long class.) And if I EVER went back to it I’d DEFINITELY wear protective headgear. To this day I have to go back every year since 2005 to be checked by an eye specialist to make sure my retina is OK.

DESPITE all that it is an EXCELLENT method for self-defense…

Of course, concealed carry is best, but can´t be done in many states or cities. A machete is probably even better at close range.

Seriously, get a short piece of doweling about 1 inch in diameter and 10 inches long, and keep it handy in your coat pocket. A large diameter and lengthy bolt, with a nut on it, could very well be something for fixing your kid´s wagon or otherwise be useful to you in an emergency.

An umbrella is a devastating and fearsome weapon. Slash with a cheap pair of sunglasses, grasped firmly in the fist, and projecting on each side. Your keys. Or your keys on a chain. A cheap stick ball point pin (a particularly vicious counter-weapon).

Anything in your hand that looks like a weapon is a weapon. Go for the face. Almost no attacker will think that it is "worth it".

Attempt to stay out of range. Walk fast and don´t let anyone (and especially a group) "gain on you". Force others to observe "your space". Stay around other people who don´t meet the perp profile. If you can´t run immediately and/or there is no other retreat available, get your back up against a building or a fence, and force them to take you on from the front. If they have a gun, throw your wallet the other way, and run.

Walk into the street (carefully) -- switch sides of the street. But, when passing on the sidewalk, attempt to pass on the left of the approaching person(s) -- most persons are right-handed, and most perps are amateurs who can´t punch effectively with their left hand.

(Continuing)

Be aware of your surroundings. Chose the sidewalk on the side of the street that will allow you to pass on the perps left, but also will allow you to use the street as an escape route. Unless your companion is big and tough, keep your companion on the side opposite that of the potential perp -- as they will use "protection issue" against you. In an emergency, a much smaller companion is to be instructed to run and go for help -- and not to stick around and "help" -- i.e., watch, worry, and likely hinder the defense.

If the perp is directly in front of you, look out for their right hand. Forget the crotch -- too hard to kick high. Go for the knees or shin, on either side.

Remember, one of the best defenses (from close in, if you are so unfortunate) is the "eye rake" -- with either hand, front-hand or back-hand, as needed. If you can reach their face (or chest), use the head butt. Don´t punch with a fist, unless you have gloves on and something in your hand that will support the bone structure.

Then leave. Don´t just stand there -- and don´t get into a fist fight. Hit and run.

Once again, bitter feelings are being cast in the direction of Texas Republican Sen. Ted Cruz. With the House passing the “clean” debt ceiling bill and sending it to the Democratic-controlled Senate, it was clear that this particular bill was going to be passed and sent to the president for his signature. But Cruz didn´t want to let Senate Republicans, including Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., off the hook and give President Obama a blank check to once again increase the debt ceiling as we are drowning in red ink. He didn't want Republicans to simply vote against the bill, hiding behind the Democrat majority who were sure to pass it.
