‘Big Love’ Vindicated:
Polygamy and Privacy

Once you blow up a societal consensus it cannot be easily reconstructed to protect only those practices or beliefs you like while still banning those you think ought to be kept beyond the pale. That’s the upshot of a case decided late on Friday in a Federal District Court in Salt Lake City, Utah that essentially decriminalized polygamy. The case, Brown v. Buhman, which was brought by the stars of Sister Wives, a TLC cable channel reality show depicting the life of a man with four wives and 17 children, who challenged the Utah statute that not only prohibited marriage

That darn slippery slope we´ve been yelling about for years. As an aside, funny ad placement. Just above this story is an ad with a photo of a young woman that simply reads "when I read the Book of Mormon, I feel closer to Jesus Christ." Coincidence?

Slippery slope indeed. I can´t see how a woman with any self respect at all would get involved with polygamy. The whole thing makes me shudder.

The big problem with a legal (as opposed to religious) definition for marriage is almost solely a result of unconstitutional taxation policy.

Taxes, just like any other governmental policy/law, are supposed to apply equally to all.

There is no legitimate reason to tax people differently as a result of their marital status and/or number of children. For that matter it is fundamentally wrong to use tax policy to penalize or reward any behavior. Taxes should be exclusively for the purpose of raising revenue for legitimate (i.e., constitutional) functions.

Notably, when the income tax was originally enacted, there was no differentiation between single or married and no "deductions" for children.

#2, I´m with you. How low would a woman´s self-esteem have to be to join in a man´s wet dream of multiple available women? I´ve always been fascinated by the polygamy stories, reading many books and, yes, I was a fan of "Big Love". But, my interest is much like hypnotizing a cobra. I can´t look away, but I know it´s lethal.

This, ultimately will not be about Mormons. Muslim men have long sought to live with multiple wives here. Age restrictions will next fall so they came marry the 11 year olds. They currently do it in England and all on the dole.

Right now, in the legislature and courts of MA, the attempt to throw out the age of consent is being accomplished. The argument is that we are depriving our children of one of the greatest experiences. They are making the argument that banning an adult having sex with children amounts to child abuse! Nambla loves MA.

There is much legitimate debate about intimate human relationships.

However none of it is any business of the government.

Don´t insist that the government support your religious or cultural beliefs unless you are ready to have them all up in your business.

Liberty is perilous.

Cowboy Up or embrace the suck.

I knew this was coming and I´m dying to see how the gay marriage crowd tries to differentiate themselves from it. This will be like a mud-wrestling/cat fight. While I sympathize with #8´s thoughts to a degree, there are cultural norms throughout all societies that are not really "religious" in origin; simply consistent. One consistent value has been that marriage was always between men and women, not between same sex partners. Never in the history of all civilizations that we know of (until the last 10 years) has a civilization thought "gay marriage" was a good idea. This is not just a Christian/religious issue, it is a cultural issue embodied in various religious and cultural practices throughout history. Democratic governments have a right to solidify cultural expectations in their laws and rules; although there should/will always exist a balance between the laws and freedom.

I suspect that after polygamy is ´normalized´, incest laws will be the next to fall. What after all is the purpose of preventing close relatives from marrying - at least in the case of same-sex ´marriage´´? The union would bear no fruit and thus there would be no danger of inbreeding. And if you allow same-sex incestual marriages, ´´in fairness´´, you have to allow the opposite-sex versions.

Beyond same-sex, incest, and multiple partners, that should be about it - and of course that is a whole lot. As for marrying the very young, the age of consent is well established, and while we may shave a year or two off that age, the general concept, that children are not adults, should endure.

And as for someone´s fantasy of getting to marry their family pet? Sorry, very, very unlikely as animals will never be treated as the legal equals of humans. (OK, maybe in San Francisco but only gerbils). Besides, it is also very likely that said pet would be below any prevailing age of consent.

If same sex marriage is OK, then it follows that there´s no reason to limit marriages to just two people. There can be three, or a million--there´s no logical limit.

Again, all the arguments say "polygamy" (many spouses) when they are referring to "polygyny" (many wives).

Nobody is discussing the consequences of "polyandry" (many husbands) which in a free society must follow along with polygyny.

With both those established, there will be no marriage as all adults willb guaranteed the right to marry as many partners as they want, and with same-sex also guaranteed, of any sex that they want.

Divorce and estate lawyers are going to have a field day.

Oh, and no prosecution of those men who marry several women without telling them about the other wives.

Oh come on, marrying pets is the most ignorant thing I´ve ever heard of. It´s usually done by people who are so closed minded they have no sense of reality.

It also seems that when someone mentions incest marriages, the narrow minded immediately think of marrying young children. again, stupid (except perhaps among the Muslims). I have followed several stories relating to incest couples. Most involve brother and sister, such as the case in Germany where adult brother and sister have 4 children and the Country is trying to punish them. If one thinks about it are they punishing the children through the parents? It was shown they were not mistreated and considered normal and happy.

In regards to children, most I´ve read have all been 18 or OVER, not UNDER. When referring to young ones it is usually just sex. When they speak of over 18 then it is love and respect, a big difference. This is what brings up the argument if you are going to have same sex marriage, then polygamy, then ADULT incest would be no different.

As I said in another thread today, if we need villains for all this then let´s look at Boomers, Flower Children, Yuppies, etc that advocated "if it feels good do it", "make love not war", "who needs marriage just live together" and "if you don´t like a law then disobey it".

Maybe it´s time for Americans to take a hard look in the mirror as to who put us on this slippery slope.
