George Rodrigue: iconic Cajun artist
and classic triumphant everyman

Times-Picayune [New Orleans, LA], by Doug MacCash

Original Article

Posted By:Attercliffe, 12/15/2013 4:35:45 PM

On Saturday (Dec. 14) night at about 10, I got the news that George Rodrigue had died at age 69. [Snip] I’ll miss him. I’ll miss his laugh. It was often the first and last thing you heard when you spoke to him on the phone. I remember he was laughing as he told me about the absurdities of his arduous radiation treatments. Rodrigue’s 2008 retrospective exhibition at the New Orleans Museum of Art was not just a personal career capper for the artist. It was a boon for the museum too. Remember that after the 2005 levee failures that followed

Comments:
Links to his works with two special links at the end of the piece: "George Rodrigue, Blue Dog artist and philanthropist: Your memories and images" and "George Rodrigue´s 2008 NOMA exhibit, ´Rodrigue´s Louisiana,´ was a must-see." Sad to see him go so soon.

The critically acclaimed performer, who was born in County Galway, Ireland, died after being taken to hospital with a long-suffering illness on Friday. He is survived by two daughters - Kate and Patricia - and a son, Lorcan Patrick O´Toole. In a statement released earlier, Kate O’Toole said: ´His family are very appreciative and completely overwhelmed by the outpouring of real love and affection being expressed towards him, and to us, during this unhappy time. The US Congress is set to adopt a law next week forbidding Turkey from using American funds to acquire a $4 billion missile system from a Chinese company blacklisted by Washington. The United States has voiced deep concern over Turkey´s decision in September to enter negotiations with China Precision Machinery Export-Import Corporation for its first long-range anti-missile system. CPMIEC, which makes the HQ-9 missile system, is under US sanctions for selling arms and missile technology to Iran and Syria. Turkey´s move also irritated its allies in Nato, which has said missile systems within the transatlantic military

On Thursday, in a plain courtroom in the centre of the North Korean capital, Pyongyang, a 67-year-old man called Jang Song Thaek was sentenced to death as a traitor to his country. His ‘crime’, according to the special military tribunal of the country’s Ministry of State Security, was to attempt ‘to overthrow the state by all sorts of intrigues and despicable methods with a wild ambition to grab the supreme power’. [Snip] Furthermore, he ‘perpetrated thrice-cursed acts of treachery in betrayal of such profound trust and warmest paternal love shown by the Party and the leader for him’. In his oration at Nelson Mandela’s memorial service on Tuesday, Barack Obama asked himself “how well have I applied his lessons in my own life?”, and invited all of us to ask the same question of ourselves. [Snip] His performance reminded me slightly of Tom Lehrer’s Folk Song Army: “We all hate poverty, war and injustice – unlike the rest of you squares.” Such rhetoric is consistent with the tone that Mr Obama has used from the beginning of his presidency, notably when he reached out to Islam in his speech in Cairo in June 2009. It is by now not too early – in some respects, it may even be too late – to ask whether Mr Obama’s

An aviation technician accused of planning to detonate a car bomb at a Kansas airport has been arrested today. Terry Lee Loewen, 58, was arrested on Friday morning at Mid-Continent regional airport in Wichita, according to U.S. Attorney Barry Grissom. [Snip] Grissom said the 58-year-old spent months developing his plan of driving a car filled with explosives into the airport, triggering the bomb and killing himself in a suicide mission. He was arrested at 5.30am this morning after he tried to open a gate on to the tarmac at the airport with his security pass.

A man has been arrested in the US state of Kansas and accused of planning to detonate a suicide car bomb at an airport, authorities have said. Terry Lee Loewen, 58, has been charged with attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction. Mr Loewen, an aviation technician, does not appear to have been affiliated with any religious group, police said. Authorities said Mr Loewen was snared by undercover FBI investigators and the public was never in danger. "There was no breach of Mid-Continent´s Airport´s security," said Kansas US Attorney Barry Grissom in a statement. "At no time was the safety of travellers or members

Under-strain A&E* units have missed the target to see patients within four hours for the first time this winter. In further sign of a growing crisis in emergency departments, the NHS in England failed to ensure that 95 percent cases were dealt with within the time limit. Health bosses said they had always known this winter ‘would be difficult’ but critics said that it could be a sign of worse to come. It is the first time that the four-hour waiting time target has not been met since April and comes amid warnings that expected winter pressures are only just

At least two people were reported to have been shot at a Colorado high school on Friday on the eve of the anniversary of the Sandy Hook elementary school massacre. Police said a student was taken in “serious condition” with a gunshot wound to local hospital after confronting another armed student at about 12.30pm local time. Police said that the suspect was found dead from an apparent self-inflicted wound inside Arapahoe High School in Littleton in the suburban outskirts of Denver. He was a male student at the school who police said wanted to “confront” a teacher at the school. The teacher was

Iran is openly defying the United States, insisting that ´the structure of sanctions has cracked and its collapse has started.´ The statement from Tehran came Thursday night via the state-run FARS news service, even as a top Treasury Department official sought to reassure the world that ´the sanctions pressure on Iran will continue to mount.´ Iran walked out of talks in Geneva designed to implement a deal struck on Nov. 24, following the Obama administration´s decision to take a hard line on enforcing sanctions against companies that assist Tehran with its nuclear program. A landmark budget agreement that passed in the U.S. House on Thursday faces certain death in the Senate unless at least five Republicans step up to support it--but so far there are no takers at all. The GOP´s Senate leaders plan to launch a procedural effort to kill the plan over a laundry list of objections--including a claim that it short-changes military veterans and other government retirees. Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin conceded that he needs to find Republicans who will vote for the measure after Republicans announced their intention Thursday night to block the deal. ´We need Republican votes to pass

Ten years after the capture of Saddam Hussein, Iraq is at risk of becoming a failed state again as al-Qaeda reclaims vast swathes of the country. Friday’s anniversary of the Iraqi dictator’s arrest sees the country still struggling with his legacy, with al-Qaeda launching a fresh campaign of terrorist atrocities from new territory carved out in western and northern Iraq. Backed by jihadists fighting the civil war in neighbouring Syria, the group is trying to create an “emirate” straddling the two countries, taking advantage of the collapse in security across the border. Road signs have even been put up proclaiming

Let me begin with a categorical statement that, given current events and recent political history, can be easily defended: Barack Hussein Obama is a willful, indoctrinated child of the Left with strong Islamic sympathies who is not fit to govern. Indeed, he would not be fit to govern Lower Slobovia, let alone the United States of America. Obama is a historic disaster of the first magnitude and, if not restrained, he will see to the irrevocable decline of the country which foolishly elected him, leaving the world on the brink of a conflict — or in the midst of one — whose repercussions cannot be underestimated. AS his popularity plummets to historic lows and his presidential legacy is in tatters, BARACK OBAMA has suffered a shocking secret meltdown. White House insiders say the deeply depressed Commander-in-Chief is hardly eating or sleeping, hasn’t talked to First Lady Michelle, 49, in weeks and is convinced everyone hates him! “Barack is shattered that his presidency and his life are in free-fall,” says a source. “He can’t believe the American public has turned on him so viciously, mainly because of the Obamacare disaster. In his 1952 book The Origins of Totalitarian Democracy, Israeli historian J. L. Talmon described a political system in which lawfully elected representatives rule a nation state whose citizens, although granted the right to vote, have little or no participation in the decision-making process of government. The federal government has become such a system, an entity unto itself operating outside of Constitutional constraints and unaccountable to the American people. The United States is now controlled by a Democratic and Republican ruling class that transcends government and sees itself as distinct from the rest of society and as the only element that may

Caroline Kennedy is a long way from Syracuse. The soft-spoken presidential scion, who four years ago this month toured upstate New York in a short and ill-fated bid for the U.S. Senate, has swept with force into her newest public role as President Barack Obama’s ambassador in Japan. And if the iconic daughter of American political royalty showed herself to be deeply uncomfortable as a glad-handing pol, she’s on her way to becoming something of a rock star in the more dignified world of diplomacy.

Business trade associations applauded the rant by Speaker John Boehner against outside conserative groups like Heritage Action and FreedomWorks, saying it was long overdue. The Hill: Business groups, whose frustration with the Tea Party boiled over during the government shutdown, said Boehner´s broadside was long overdue. "I think we have all said it. The business community has been uniformly frustrated at how strident the ideological groups have been in defiance of reason," said David French, senior vice president of government relations of the National Retail Federation. The parents of Trayvon Martin met with publishers this week to shop a book about their son, the unarmed black teenager who was shot and killed in Florida in 2012. According to two publishing executives who participated in meetings, Mr. Martin’s parents, Sybrina Fulton and Tracy Martin, said they intended to write a book that gives the full picture of their son while tracing their own experience of shock and sorrow. The meetings were described as somber and moving by publishers who were present. Ms. Fulton and Mr. Martin were accompanied by Jan Miller, their Dallas-based literary agent. Former Arkansas Governor and Fox News Channel host Mike Huckabee weighed in on the escalating feud between establishment Republican politicians and conservative activist groups on Saturday. Asked for his thoughts on House Speaker John Boehner’s (R-OH) admonition of the idealized purism advocated by some outside groups, Huckabee sympathized with Boehner saying that governing is more difficult than activism and “politics is not theology.” Huckabee began by saying that Boehner was not scolding the tea party movement but conservative groups that capitalize on that movement. He added that some of those groups appear to have an “all or nothing mindset” and that

In a game-changer for the legal fight over same-sex marriage that gives credence to opponents’ “slippery slope” arguments, a federal judge has now ruled that the legal reasoning for same-sex marriage means that laws against polygamy are likewise unconstitutional. In his 91-page opinion in Brown v. Buhman, on Dec. 13, U.S. District Judge Clark Waddoups struck down Utah’s law making polygamy a crime. In so doing, he may have opened Pandora’s Box. As a condition for becoming a state in 1896, Congress required Utah to outlaw polygamy, which is marriage between three or more persons. This case involved a family of

The Republican establishment is fed up with the “outside groups” — the conservative lobbying shops and super PACs that have pulled the party Rightward in recent years — and this time, it’s the establishment that is uninterested in compromise. House Speaker John Boehner and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell are playing to win. But here´s the problem: Directly fighting the insurgent groups only makes them stronger. In a span of 48 hours, the party leadership took two direct shots at the conservative insurgents. Boehner attacked the outside groups on camera, singling out Heritage Action. Also, Rep. Steve Scalise, R-La., fired Republican Study

What we know: Racism has left a vast legacy of violence. Bigotry in America has marginalized a diverse range of minority culture. It dashes the hopes of children. What we didn´t know: Bias based on race costs the United States a shade under $2 trillion a year. (Snip) Addressing factors such as health care inequities, unjustified incarceration disparities, and lesser employment and education opportunities would generate 12 percent more annual U.S. earnings, the study found. Among the more striking findings cited are a U.S. Department of Commerce study estimating that minority purchasing power would increase from $4.3 trillion to $6.1

Vice admiral Michelle Howard,53, is currently the deputy chief of naval operations, plans, and strategy.
