When SantaCon Comes to Town,

New Yorkers have long endured other people’s celebrations. On St. Patrick’s Day, they know to stay out of the pubs in Midtown if they do not want to be overwhelmed in a sea of semiconscious green. They avoid driving into Manhattan at all costs during the Puerto Rican Day Parade. Fashion’s Night Out is an occasion to stay in if you live in SoHo. And New Year’s Eve? Amateur hour — unless an out-of-town visitor drags a native kicking and screaming to Times Square. Now, a new contender has emerged for the event that many New Yorkers love to hate:

KATHLEEN KANE, Pennsylvania´s attorney general since January, is now considering a run for higher elected office. The Scranton native is not planning to enter the crowded 2014 Democratic primary election for governor, as many speculated. Instead, Kane is eyeing a 2016 run for the U.S. Senate against Pat Toomey, a Lehigh Valley Republican. Three sources close to Kane confirmed that she is very interested in a 2016 Senate run. "I think she sees it as a good opportunity," one of the sources said. "I think it´s something she´s seriously looking at." No decision has been made, according to a second

A cross atop Mount Soledad in California is an unconstitutional religious display on government land and must come down, a federal judge in San Diego ruled late Thursday. U.S. District Judge Larry Burns ordered the cross, which honors veterans, must be removed within 90 days -- a decision that could result in the case being sent back to the U.S. Supreme Court. Burns immediately stayed his order pending an expected appeal. The original lawsuit was filed in 2006 by the American Civil Liberties Union on behalf of the Jewish Veterans of the United States of American and several other Southern

Jay Carney, former reporter and current White House press secretary, feuded with the press corps today over the strictures the administration has put on access to the president — most notably for photographers and video-journalists. (NOTE: The Washington Post has signed a letter along with a number of other news organizations protesting the White House’s policy.) Since the debate was primarily about photographers’ chance (or lack thereof) to document the president’s days, we thought it made sense to tell the story of “Jay vs. the media” in pictures. Seven of them to be exact. (If still pictures aren’t enough for

I’d like to interrupt your current cable news broadcast about [insert Selfie-Gate, Santa Claus´ skin color, Handshake-Gate, or the War on Christmas™] to throw some cold water on everything: The Associated Press reports that missiles fired by a U.S. drone obliterated a convoy of vehicles heading to a wedding in Yemen, killing at least 13 people. As with most reports of these military strikes in Yemen, there are conflicting reports: The Associated Press reports 13 deaths and cites an unnamed Yemeni official who said there were suspected al Qaeda militants among the convoy; but Reuters, on the other hand, says

This decision is consistent with our practice of individual review of all ads under our commercial advocacy standards.”

WASHINGTON- President Obama will meet Friday with a group of newly elected mayors, including Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti and New York Mayor-elect Bill de Blasio, for a discussion on job creation, a White House official said. The president plans to discuss federal-local partnerships that could spur growth, the official said. Obama has regularly tried to engage local officials on his largely stalled economic agenda. His plans for creating jobs by increasing spending on roads, bridges, ports and other projects have found little traction with Republicans in Washington. Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL), the ranking GOP member of the Senate Budget Committee, said Thursday that Senate Republicans plan to filibuster the budget deal that House Budget Committee chairman Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) cut with Senate Budget Committee chairwoman Sen. Patty Murray (D-WA). The deal passed the House 332-94, with 62 Republicans and 32 Democrats voting against it. The bill is expected to come up for votes in the Senate early next week, either Monday or Tuesday. The type of filibuster Sessions spoke of is not the traditional “talking filibuster” like the one Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) launched earlier this

I soon found out that what I thought was a summer cold was actually Strep bacteria poisoning my blood stream. The bacteria blinded my left eye, ate a hole through my heart, caused five strokes on both sides of my brain and forced the removal of my prosthetic left knee. Views of the tea party are at all-time lows in a new poll, as primary challenges to establishment Republicans continue to heat up Washington. Just 30 percent of Americans view the tea party favorably in a new Gallup poll released Wednesday, the movement’s lowest point since Gallup began polling about it during its rise in 2010. Also in a first, a majority of Americans had an unfavorable view of the tea party, at 51 percent. Similar numbers of respondents described themselves as proponents or opponents of the tea party: Twenty-two percent identified themselves as tea party supporters, while 24 percent said they

WASHINGTON – It’s not exactly a ringing endorsement of the budget deal.“Embrace the suck,” House minority leader Rep. Nancy Pelosi told fellow Democrats Thursday morning, a source told Politico.“We need to get this off the table so we can go forward,” she added. It’s a way of telling her colleagues the budget deal negotiated with Republicans is the best they can get. Democrats are fuming that the bipartisan budget deal doesn’t extend unemployment benefits for more than a million Americans. One of Pelosi’s top lieutenants, Rep. Chris Van Hollen, the top Democrat on the House Budget Committee, said Thursday it

Columnist Charles Krauthammer attacked new Obamacare rules unveiled by HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius in a late Thursday conference call, saying the Obama administration is “approach[ing] banana republic lawlessness” by issuing the decrees. Krauthammer spoke with Fox News’ Bret Baier on a panel with Juan Williams and Judge Andrew Napolitano, as the three reacted to Sebelius’ new directives for insurance companies. “This is exactly a reaction to a deep understanding among Democrats that [Obamacare] is a train wreck,” he said. “And it’s a panic reaction. As the judge said, this is utterly lawless. This now approaches banana republic lawlessness.

THE Internet has been abuzz over the spectacle of President Obama and the prime ministers of Britain and Denmark snapping a photo of themselves — a “selfie,” to use the mot du jour — with a smartphone at the memorial service for Nelson Mandela in South Africa on Tuesday. Leaving aside whether it was appropriate, the moment captured the democratization of image making that is a hallmark of our gadget-filled, technologically rich era. Manifestly undemocratic, in contrast, is the way Mr. Obama’s administration — in hypocritical defiance of the principles of openness and transparency he campaigned on — has systematically tried

If you go down on the ice today you´re sure of a big surprise - a rare glimpse of 20 polar bears gorging on a bloody midnight feast. These photographs show a rare cluster of males, females and cubs all dining out on the remains of a whale carcass. They spent a night and a day stripping every last morsel from the mammoth sea creature. Usually Polar bears are solitary and would never tolerate being so close to each other. But with food in plentiful supply and bellies dragging on the floor they seem too lethargic to fight.Wildlife photographer Michal
