Podhoretz vs. Will
Power Line, by Scott Johnson

Original Article

Posted By:MDMuskrat, 12/13/2013 9:51:44 AM

The problem with George Will’s disappointing column on the deal with Iran is that it assumes Iran can be contained/deterred. Substantial evidence to the contrary can be adduced. Norman Podhoretz adduces some of it in “Strike Iran now to avert disaster later.” Podhoretz recalls: As Bernard Lewis, the leading contemporary authority on Islam, put it in 2007, to these fanatics “mutual assured destruction is not a deterrent, it is an inducement. We know already [from the Iran-Iraq war] that they do not give a damn about killing their own people in great numbers. . . .

Comments:
The choices are clear...in the piece by Podhoretz: conventional weapons now; nuclear weapons later.

The decision not to stop Hitler early on when he invaded the Sudetenland brought about WWII. Some people never learn from history. Those that understand history are almost always conservative.

Erik Prince: Out of Blackwater
and Into China
Wall Street Journal, by David Feith    Original Article

Erik Prince —ex-Navy SEAL, ex-CIA spy, ex-CEO of private-security firm Blackwater —calls himself an "accidental tourist" whose modest business boomed after 9/11, expanded into Iraq and Afghanistan, and then was "blowtorched by politics." To critics and conspiracy theorists, he is a mercenary war-profiteer. To admirers, he´s a patriot who has repeatedly answered America´s call with bravery and creativity. Now, sitting in a boardroom above Hong Kong´s Victoria Harbour, he explains his newest title, acquired this month: chairman of Frontier Services Group, an Africa-focused security and logistics company with intimate ties to China´s largest state-owned conglomerate, Citic Group.

The Simon Wiesenthal Center has been working with UNESCO since 2011 on an exhibit titled “The People, the Book, the Land — 3,500 years of ties between the Jewish people and the Land of Israel.” The exhibit was scheduled to open in Paris on Tuesday, but it was canceled last week by UNESCO’s Director General Irina Bokova. Why? Arab members of UNESCO wrote a letter claiming that the exhibit would impair the “peace process.” [T]he President of the Arab group within UNESCO expressed “deep worry and great disapproval” over the program showing the age old connection between Israel and the Jewish people.

Sen. Patrick Leahy says the American people are at risk of being controlled by their government due to the expansive surveillance powers of the National Security Agency. Speaking on “Fox News Sunday,” the Vermont Democrat and chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee told host Chris Wallace that the nation’s lawmakers must act to return control of the government to the people. Kimberly Strassel’s weekly Wall Street Journal column “IRS targeting and 2014? is something of a bombshell. As Mark Tapscott explains, Strassel reports that keeping the IRS “muzzle in place” for 2014 was Obama’s top priority during negotiations with House Republicans on the just-passed omnibus spending bill. Understanding the Iran deal

I think that Iranian officials have been pretty good sources of understanding the nature of the deal we have entered into with Iran. Among other things, in my view, they rightly crow that it’s a good deal for them and a bad deal for us. They claim victory. By contrast, the Obama administration has misrepresented and obfuscated the nature of the deal from the git-go. In terms of understanding, they are an obstacle to be overcome. Iranian negotiator Abbas Araqchi (or Aragchi) is the guy who recently disclosed the existence of the 30-page side deal (or “nonpaper”) we have yet

The Iran nuclear deal is in place. And Senate majority leader Harry Reid is preventing the Senate from voting on Iran sanctions to be implemented in case the Iran deal fails. Reid is holding up the vote at the urging of President Obama. The Emergency Committee for Israel is calling on Reid to allow a vote on the sanctions bill that´s supported by many Democrats and Republicans, and well over half of the Senate. "Who says President Obama isn´t tough?" ECI asks in its statement.

It appears the inmates are running the asylum in both major parties, based on what´s being planned by Democrats and Republicans for 2014. Okay, not the inmates, but it must be folks who can´t see beyond the Hudson or the Potomac. As the Washington Examiner´s Brian Hughes reports this morning, a lot of Democrats think newly elected New York Mayor Bill de Blasio -- the progressives´ progressive -- points the way for their party nationally. "Some Democrats say taking de Blasio’s message nationally would be an effective political tool.

The often stale British political system is being rocked by its very own Tea Party. The UK Independence Party (UKIP), formed in 1993 opposing Britain’s entry into the European Union, failed to make an electoral dent for a long time. However UKIP has built up steam in recent years and is spearheading a seismic shift in the British political spectrum. In this year’s local elections – the British version of midterms -- UKIP took a stunning 23 percent of the vote, up from the 3.1 percent they won in the 2010 national election.

Last Friday, an opinion by Texas federal judge Andrew Hanen opened a window onto the sheer lawlessness of the Obama administration–in particular, the Department of Homeland Security. The case was United States of America v. Mirtha Veronica Nava-Martinez. As world powers debate what a comprehensive nuclear deal with Iran should look like, Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu continues to maintain that Israel is not bound by the interim agreement that the P5+1 and Iran struck in Geneva on November 24. Israel, says Netanyahu, “has the right and the obligation to defend itself.” One question then is whether Netanyahu actually intends to strike Iranian nuclear facilities. The other question, no less important, is whether Israel could really pull it off. American analysts are divided on Israel’s ability to take effective military action.

The Democrats´ new much-vaunted master plan for annihilating the Tea Party movement calls for aggressive class warfare, demagoguery, and lying about the beliefs, motives, and goals of Tea Party supporters, Sen. Chuck Schumer revealed yesterday. Echoing President Obama´s infamous "bitter clingers" remarks, the New York Democrat argued that Tea Party supporters are cartoonish figures who are easily ridiculed. Invoking all the usual liberal cliches about conservatives, Schumer said the Tea Party is successor to "the Know-Nothings, Prohibitionists, Father Coughlin, and Huey Long." If there is anything New York doesn´t need it´s more reasons for Empire State residents to flee. Over the last decade (2001-11) New York´s population fell by 1.6 million. Many disgruntled New Yorkers said enough, packed up and left the state. This was a larger population drain than suffered by any other state. Congratulations. That´s why Democratic Gov. Politics: The Obama administration has turned the executive branch loose on its enemies — part of a disturbing and unprecedented trend toward delegitimizing political differences and marginalizing conservatives. Behind the special status of his presidency, President Obama has used the machinery of government to harass and intimidate political opponents — to an extent greater even than former Presidents Richard Nixon and Bill Clinton, both threatened with impeachment. In politics, lying is the new sex. Even the lesser sin, exaggeration, is grounds for questions about your suitability to run for office. Americans may be becoming more like the French in tolerating peccadilloes (just ask Rep. Mark Sanford of South Carolina or Sen. David Vitter of Louisiana about surviving a sex scandal), but get a detail wrong about whether you divorced at 21 or at 19, and woe unto you. That’s what happened to Wendy Davis over the weekend. You may know her as the Texas state senator in pink sneakers who delivered an 11-hour filibuster against abortion restrictions in June.

Maybe it’s because “Bubba” just doesn’t have the same je ne sais quoi as the “Gipper,” but Bill Clinton is apparently jealous of the reverence Republicans give former president Ronald Reagan. According to the much-talked-about New York Times Magazine feature story on the world around Hillary, Bill and Chelsea Clinton, the former president is described as miffed that Democrats don´t treat him like Republicans do Reagan.
