Lie of the Year: ´If you like your

Tampa Bay Times [FL], by Angie Drobnic Holan

Original Article

It was a catchy political pitch and a chance to calm nerves about his dramatic and complicated plan to bring historic change to America’s health insurance system. "If you like your health care plan, you can keep it," President Barack Obama said -- many times -- of his landmark new law. But the promise was impossible to keep. So this fall, as cancellation letters were going out to approximately 4 million Americans, the public realized Obama’s breezy assurances were wrong. Boiling down the complicated health care law to a soundbite proved treacherous, even for its promoter-in-chief. Obama and his team

I suppose this "award" makes Obama the "Liar of the Year."

I am rooting for these 7 million progressive brats to sign on for ObamaCare.

I am an old codger and they will be paying for my health care and entitlements.

By the time they reach my age, there will be nothing left for them. They will wonder "Why did out Government do this to us."

John Edwards — who quit his presidential campaign in disgrace when he was caught cheating on his wife — was barred from Bunny Mellon’s funeral by her family. The former US Senator from North Carolina had charmed Rachel Lambert Mellon, known to all as Bunny, into donating $700,000 for his 2008 presidential bid. Prosecutors charged he used some of the money to support his mistress Rielle Hunter, who was then pregnant with his daughter Frances Quinn. When the former politician and his daughter Cate Edwards, who is also his law partner, arrived Friday at Mellon’s funeral at the Trinity Episcopal

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – President Obama compared the Republican budget plan to a "stinkburger" or "meanwich" during a speech here Wednesday, using a series of zingers in an attempt to strike a contrast with the GOP on economic issues in an election year. In a speech to an enthusiastic crowd of 1,400 at the University of Michigan, Obama repeatedly mocked Republican ideas about how to improve the economy, as he touted his own proposal to raise the minimum wage. Obama, who visited the local Zingerman´s deli before the speech, said that Republican proposals to cut taxes for wealthier Americans and

A major newspaper in Spain has published an exclusive claiming that sources within the search effort to find missing Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 are considering the possibility that the plane was shot down by military forces in order to prevent a terror attack and the government giving the order has yet to divulge its involvement. The report surfaced online this weekend, titled "Intelligence Sources Weigh Whether Malaysian Plane Was Derailed To Prevent New 9/11." It suggests that the plane did not fall into the southwestern Indian Ocean, as investigators have insisted for more than a week after definitively concluding that

Saudi Arabia has officially identified atheists as terrorists in sweeping new laws that threaten up to 20 years in prison for almost any criticism of the government or Islam. The regulations place secular citizens who commit thought crimes in the same category as violent terrorist groups such as Al-Qaeda´s Yemen branch and Saudi Hezbollah. Under the new decree by King Abdullah, Saudi Arabia will jail for up to 20 years anyone who fights in conflicts abroad - an apparent move to deter Saudis from joining rebels in Syria. But the law also applies to any Saudi citizen or a foreigner

Not since we read Shakespeare’s “Merchant of Venice” have we encountered logic as twisted as the proposal to rescue the failing Middle East “peace process” by freeing Jonathan Pollard. That is the news on the Drudge Report, which links to a Reuters dispatch reporting that Pollard, who is being held by America on a life sentence for spying for Israel, and “groups of Palestinian prisoners” could be “freed under an emerging deal to salvage Middle East peace talks.” It attributes this news to “sources close to the negotiations,” who say Pollard could be out by April. Spanish historians say they have discovered what Monty Python could not – the Holy Grail, the legendary cup Jesus supposedly drank from at the Last Supper. The Spaniards – Margarita Torres and José Ortega del Río – believe the 2,000-year-old vessel is in a church in León in northern Spain. The pair spent three years studying the history of the chalice and last week published a book, “The Kings of the Grail,” making their case. The onyx chalice, they explained, was concealed within another antique vessel known as the Chalice of Doña Urruca, which is located in León’s basilica of

This week, the United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is releasing its latest report, the “Working Group II Contribution to the Fifth Assessment Report.” Like its past reports, this one predicts apocalyptic consequences if mankind fails to give the UN the power to tax and regulate fossil fuels and subsidize and mandate the use of alternative fuels. But happily, an international group of scientists I have been privileged to work with has conducted an independent review of IPCC’s past and new reports, along with the climate science they deliberately exclude or misrepresent.

Say this for Bill de Blasio: He seems educable. He ran full-tilt away from another potentially titanic confrontation with Gov. Cuomo last week — this one about housing subsidies — after absorbing an astonishing public thrashing from the governor in February over gouge-the-rich taxation and charter schools, among other things. Public humiliation can be a terrific teaching tool, and Cuomo has neither spared the rod nor spoiled the mayor, beginning on Day One. (But always wearing a smile, of course). So when City Hall last week suggested strongly that Cuomo find cash for an expansion of welfare housing subsidies, the

The Justices were hearing oral arguments in Sebelius v. Hobby Lobby Stores, Inc., a case hyped by the Democratic Party as a test for women’s rights. Justices Kagan, Ginsberg, and Sotomayor sprang on Hobby Lobby’s attorney , interrupting his every sentence and pummeling him with questions taken right out of the Democratic Party’s “war on women” playbook. A proposal is in the works that would change the state tax system to charge drivers by the mile, instead of at the gas pump. The proposal would be to charge a half cent per mile for cars, which would generate almost $500 million in annual state revenue. Do you think members of Congress are overpaid or underpaid? Most likely you’d go with the former, but Democratic congressman Jim Moran argues it’s actually the latter. In an interview with CQ Roll Call, Moran says, “I think the American people should know that the members of Congress are underpaid.” The House recently took up a bill to freeze members’ paychecks, placing another halt on the annual cost-of-living pay increases they would normally get and keeping annual salary at $174,000. Moran believes that this is the wrong way to go, not necessarily talking about himself in particular, but saying there

With Chris Christie in deep trouble, Republican poobahs are reportedly looking to Jeb Bush to save their party in 2016. The former two-term governor of Florida speaks fluent Spanish, is a convert to Catholicism, and has high name recognition. Jeb could raise millions of dollars over night by just saying “yes” to running. Despite all this, there are strong reasons Republicans should say no to him. 1. His last name is poison. Let’s face it, if Jeb Bush had the last name of Something Else he would have already run for president in 2008 or 2012. According to a recent Washington Post/ABC News poll registered voters were asked if they would definitely NOT vote for Jeb Bush and 50 percent said they would not.

The human kindling that makes up the flammable Republican base may soon burst into flames, again. Portions of that excitable cohort are looking — some with fawn-like eyes filled with hurt, others with sparks shooting from eyes narrowed like gun slits — askance at other Republicans urging Jeb Bush to seek the 2016 presidential nomination. A candidacy by Florida’s former governor would be desirable. But if Republicans want to avoid intra-party carnage, they should be very careful about doing what The Post recently reported: “Many of the Republican Party’s most powerful insiders and financiers have begun a behind-the-scenes campaign to draft
