What is ´affluenza´? Sentence in Texas

HOUSTON - "Affluenza," the term used by a psychologist to argue that a North Texas teenager from a wealthy family should not be sent to prison for killing four pedestrians while driving drunk, is not a recognized diagnosis and should not be used to justify bad behavior, psychologists said Thursday. The term was popularized in the late 1990s by Jessie O´Neill, the granddaughter of a past president of General Motors, when she wrote the book "The Golden Ghetto: The Psychology of Affluence." It has since been used to describe a condition in which children — generally from richer families —

"Affluenza" was a parody Rush Limbaugh first used years ago as a joke.

Couple of points about this. First, the judge has a history of wanting the offender to receive "treatment." There was a case about 2 years ago where a 16 year old beat a pizza delivery guy (elderly gentleman) to death with a baseball bat...he received the same same sentence as this case.

As for the prosecution, according to the talk radio in the area and the interviews with those in the court room, did a great job but the judge wanted this outcome.

The judge, a Republican, is leaving office 12-31-14.

I hope the families of those killed sue the boy for every cent his parent´s have so the little snot has nothing to inherit, plus a garnish of any salary he might get from his dad´s pals. If the rumor that the judge was bought off is true, someone needs to be in jail for that. A recall might deny the judge a cushy retirement. I hope so.

Kid isn´t wealthy, his parents are. Great lesson from the Cosby Show.

Parents need to man up and help him face the consequences of his behavior instead of ignoring the problem. It is only going to get worse.

Little-Known Health Act Fact: Prison

In a little-noticed outcome of President Obama’s Affordable Care Act, jails and prisons around the country are beginning to sign up inmates for health insurance under the law, taking advantage of the expansion of Medicaid that allows states to extend coverage to single and childless adults — a major part of the prison population. State and counties are enrolling inmates for two main reasons. Although Medicaid does not cover standard health care for inmates, it can pay for their hospital stays beyond 24 hours — meaning states can transfer millions of dollars of obligations to the federal government. But the

One of the most seismic changes in American politics over the last decade has been the emergence of a sharp generational split among the electorate. The Democratic Party owes its success in the last two presidential elections almost entirely to overwhelming support among the very young, which has overcome continued conservatism among older voters. The Pew Research Institute has dominated the field of exploring the ideological cleavages among different generations. And its latest survey shows again how the liberalism of the youngest voting cohort, millennials, remains firm, and likely to continue to recast the electorate. A few charts from the survey

The most dangerous parts of a flight are takeoff and landing. Rarely do incidents happen when a plane is cruising seven miles above the earth. So the disappearance of a Malaysia Airlines jet well into its flight Saturday morning over the South China Sea has led aviation experts to assume that whatever happened was quick and left the pilots no time to place a distress call. Hi, everybody. This week, I traveled to New England, where I was joined by four governors who are working to raise the minimum wage in each of their states. And they’ve also joined me in calling on Congress to raise the minimum wage from $7.25 to $10.10 an hour. Because it would give nearly 800,000 Americans in their states a raise — and lift wages for about 28 million across the country. So these governors aren’t waiting for Congress to make up its mind. And in my State of the Union Address, I asked America’s business leaders to go ahead and do what they could to raise their employees’ wages, too.
