The US and Britain have suspended all non-lethal assistance in to northern Syria after forces from the new Islamic Front seized headquarters and warehouses belonging to the opposition’s Supreme Military Council. Fighters from the Front, a union of six major rebel groups, took control of the Free Syrian Army (FSA) bases at the Bab al-Hawa crossing on Syria’s northwestern border with Turkey late on Friday. Turkey shut its side of the border crossing, in Hatay province, due to a reported increase in clashes on the Syrian side, customs sources told the Reuters news agency. Politicians should drop the selfies and Twitter.

There’s a YouTube clip I can’t stop watching called “Margaret Thatcher don’t want to jump”. The then Prime Minister has just reached the end of a TV interview, and the presenter is asking her to “make a little jump”. “Why?” It’s “just a gimmick” that all her guests do. Thatcher raises an eyebrow. “I bet that you wouldn’t do it,” says the presenter, becoming at the same time conciliatory, wheedling, insistent. “Just a little jump.” Come on. “Gorbachev did it.” “But what”, inquires the Iron Lady icily, “is the point of it?” “It just shows another side

NHS patients will benefit from a new brain scan that can help doctors confirm or rule out a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease. David Cameron will announce tomorrow that Britain will be the first place in the world where the revolutionary technique will be available for free. The test will mean that, for the first time, doctors will be able to definitively rule out Alzheimer’s in some patients for five years. Currently, one in five cases of the disease is misdiagnosed. It could also help doctors to confirm an existing diagnosis of Alzheimer’s, ensuring people get the treatment they need.

Oh, Bam! President´s approval rating plummets

Barack Obama is facing poll numbers that are now in the same territory as President George W. Bush´s following Hurricane Katrina. The Quinnipiac University Polling Institute released numbers on Tuesday showing that just 38 percent of registered voters approve of the job Obama is doing as president, with a whopping 56 percent saying they disapprove. The president has lost his landslide electoral edge among young voters, too, with a negative 41–49 percent rating among 18- to 29-year-old voters. His once formidable support among Hispanics has also evaporated: They now support him by an historically small 50–43 percent margin.

President Obama shook hands with Cuban President Raul Castro today, an unprecedented gesture of friendship which occurred, fittingly, at the memorial service for Nelson Mandela. [Snip] Obama greeted a long line of world leaders and heads of state attending the memorial service in Johannesburg after flying to South Africa with a U.S. delegation which included former presidents Bill Clinton, George W Bush and Jimmy Carter along with their families. Obama also shook hands with Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff, who has clashed with the U.S. President over alleged National Security Agency spying. He was later spotted in the VIP stands posing

Barack Obama today paid an emotional tribute to Nelson Mandela, calling the South African leader a ´giant of history´ as he spoke at a memorial service in a stadium where around a third of the seats were mysteriously left empty. The U.S. President, who moments earlier had shaken hands with Cuba´s Raul Castro in a historic moment of reconciliation, receivied a rapturous reception for his eulogy at the service in Johannesburg´s FNB Stadium, which started an hour late in the pouring rain. Cyril Ramaphosa, the deputy president of the ruling ANC party who opened the proceedings, said: ´In our tradition,

There is a philosophy taught in business schools called Just in Time which preaches that factories should be run as leanly and efficiently as possible. Rather than paying to keep people and machinery on standby you reduce the capacity of a production line to the level at which it can just about cope with demand. It is a more profitable way to run a factory but I am not sure I would be so keen on the theory if I had been lying in the back of an ambulance for six hours and 22 minutes waiting for a hospital bed

When I was a kid, I knew two different Santa Clauses. The first had a fat belly, rosy cheeks, a long white beard, and skin as pink as bubble gum. He was omnipresent, visiting my pre-school and the local mall, visible in all of my favorite Christmas specials. Then there was the Santa in my family’s household, in the form of ornaments, cards, and holiday figurines. A near-carbon copy of the first one—big belly, rosy cheeks, long white beard: check, check, check. But his skin was as dark as mine. Seeing two different Santas was bewildering. Eventually I asked my father what

On his way to the podium at the memorial ceremony for former South African president Nelson Mandela, President Obama walked down the line of dignitaries, greeting other leaders there to pay their respects. Among the hands shaken: that of Cuban leader Raul Castro. Obama neither made a special effort to shake Castro’s hand nor to avoid him. A snub might have been awkward: In his speech, Obama praised Mandela’s “greatest gift” as “his recognition that we are all bound together in ways that can be invisible to the eye; that there is a oneness to humanity; that we achieve ourselves by

The Obama State Department has finally released a second round of photos revealing the harrowing devastation wrought by a terrorist attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi on Sept. 11, 2012. The new photographs depict rampant damage to the consulate. They show charred walls, smoldering fires, Arabic graffiti defacing exterior walls, and scattered debris throughout. The extent of the damage would lead any reasonably serious person to conclude that this was a cold, calculated attack, carefully coordinated to mark the 11th anniversary of Sept. 11, 2001. Unfortunately for the American people, the Obama-Clinton-Rice cabal that led to the Benghazi cover-up was

A “presidential selfie” featuring President Barack Obama, British Prime Minister David Cameron, and Denmark’s Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt at Nelson Mandela’s memorial service began making the rounds this morning, but it’s the person not included in the frame who caught everyone’s attention: As anyone with two eyes and a Twitter account has noticed, Michelle Obama does not appear amused. Of course, though a picture says a thousand words, not all of those words are necessarily true. FLOTUS might not have even known the photo was taking place. Or she could disapprove of funeral selfies. Either way.

President Obama’s job approval among American voters has dropped to negative territory with just 38 percent voicing their approval versus the 58 who says they disapprove, according to a national poll released Tuesday by the independent Quinnipiac University. That is one percent less than the 39% who said they approved of him in last month’s poll. The majority of the 2,692 registered voters the University in early December said that the president is not honest and trustworthy.
