Raul Castro Reaches Out to Obama,
but Don’t Call It a Thaw

The Daily Beast, by Eli Lake

Tuesday’s handshake between Obama and Castro comes after six months of quiet diplomacy between the United States and Cuba—and Castro signaling he’s ready for bigger talks. Since the Cuban revolution, the island’s ties with the United States have been marred by espionage, near war, sabotage, and deep distrust. But since President Obama came to office in 2009, Cuban leader Raul Castro has signaled that he is interested in a new relationship, according to current and former U.S. officials. Earlier this year, Castro agreed to host peace talks between Colombia and the FARC, a Marxist rebel group that until recently Cuba and

Two thoughts:

1. I´m somewhat pleased that he didn´t bow.
2. I think that normalizing relations with Cuba will have a positive impact on that country. Cubans will have better access to American ideas and products and will be more inclined to demand more freedoms from their regime. And frankly, I dont see how Cuba, China etc or any other country run by dictators, where we do have normal relations.

I know......this is blasphemy.

For decades I thought the way to handle Castro was just what our govt did – cut them off as completely as we could. But in the Nineties it occurred to me that doing that merely hurt the people of Cuba, not their faux and awful leadership.

They maintain power largely thru two means: brute force, and control of the means of communications. We can’t do much about the force part, but we CAN flood the island with (illegal) cell phones, all charged up and with phone numbers loaded; radios and iPads tuned to US stations that broadcast news of Cuba; and other means of commo that would enable people to plan and coordinate events there out of official control.

Seems to me this is the way to do it. Float these kinds of items to Cuba from outside Cuba’s international boundary. Enough would get thru Cubans.

Normalizing relations will not help the Cuban people. They will still have a horrible economy and dictators. All it will do is give the elite in the government more goodies.

New federal rule could end recycling

The Post Standard ( Syracruse NY), by Don Cazentre    Original Article

It seems to be a perfect match. Brewers need a way to dispose of the wet and mushy grains that are a byproduct of making beer. Farmers are looking for inexpensive but healthful feed for their livestock. So breweries across the country -- including those here in Central New York -- donate their used grains to local farmers. It´s free: The farmers just stop by the breweries and cart the stuff away, usually in large plastic containers. It´s a classic example of reuse and recycling, but a provision in the proposed federal Food Safety Modernization Act might bring it to an end. The

The Obama administration hopes to fight global warming with the geeky power of numbers, maps and even gaming-type simulations. The White House on Wednesday announced an initiative to provide private companies and local governments better access to already public climate data. The idea is that with that localized data they can help the public understand the risks they face, especially in coastal areas where flooding is a big issue. The government also is working with several high-tech companies, such as Google, Microsoft and Intel, to come up with tools to make communities more resilient in dealing with weather extremes, such as flooding,

With Crimea in Russia´s pocket, the world anxiously awaits Vladimir Putin´s next move. Beyond the prize of the Black Sea peninsula, a picture is emerging of what the Russian president ultimately wants from his power play: broad autonomy for Ukraine´s Russian-speaking regions and guarantees that Ukraine will never realize the Kremlin´s worst nightmare - joining NATO. The big question is whether Putin is willing to invade more areas of eastern Ukraine to achieve these goals. For the West, it all boils down to a tough dilemma over compromising with Moscow to avert military conflict or taking a hard-line stance and risking

Lady Gaga never saw it coming. After a relentless, mammoth, publicity extravaganza for her new album, ArtPop, she was upstaged by a comet seeming to swoop in out of nowhere — the release of Eminem’s The Marshall Mathers LP 2. Eminem’s sales boomed big, while Gaga’s embarrassingly fizzled, leading to quick deep discounts to keep ArtPop on the charts. Eminem, now 41, did few interviews and personal appearances for this formidable double album. As with Adele sweeping the Grammys two years ago, his instant commercial triumph demonstrates the readiness of a discerning world public to respond to power and passion

Ice continued to build this past week on the Great Lakes due to the cold air and temperatures staying below freezing, and Lake Superior´s new record shows it. The lake is 92 percent frozen, toppling a 20-year-old record of 91 percent set on Feb. 5, 1994. That statistic helped total Great Lakes ice cover soar, and we can expect to see more form in coming days. The air temperatures this past week averaged around five degrees below normal for the Great Lakes area. This amount of deviation from normal means it was a fairly cold week. As of February 5,

Stymied by the GOP´s long resistance to cap and trade legislation, the EPA this week began public hearings -- the next step toward a final rule -- to cut carbon dioxide emissions from new coal plants. The rule would limit emissions to 1100 pounds per Megawatt hour, a level the coal industry says is technologically unattainable. Green energy proponents disagree. "Opponents say this will prevent ever building another coal-fired plant in the United States today. They say that the technology is not commercially available. These claims are scare tactics," Rep. HenryWaxman, D-Calif., said in a press conference Thursday outside EPA headquarters in advance

An Oregon startup has developed a pocket-size device that uses tiny sponges to stop bleeding fast. When a soldier is shot on the battlefield, the emergency treatment can seem as brutal as the injury itself. A medic must pack gauze directly into the wound cavity, sometimes as deep as 5 inches into the body, to stop bleeding from an artery. It’s an agonizing process that doesn´t always work--if bleeding hasn´t stopped after three minutes of applying direct pressure, the medic must pull out all the gauze and start over again. It’s so painful, “you take the guy’s gun away first,”

Before getting to the speech itself, it’s worth noting a few things. When the Democrats passed and Barack Obama signed Obamacare, the majority opposed it. About 56%, in fact. A majority have consistently opposed that law ever since. The Obama administration touted 7 million sign-ups by March 31 as “success.” When that goal appeared to be unreachable, the administration suggested that maybe 5 or 6 million would be enough. Now, as if by magic, they have their number. Somehow. All along, the administration has touted false numbers of enrollees. A triumphant President Barack Obama declared his signature medical insurance overhaul a success, saying it has made America´s health care system ´a lot better.´ But buried in the 7.1 million enrollments he announced in a heavily staged Rose Garden appearance is a more unsettling reality. The former two-term governor of Florida speaks fluent Spanish, is a convert to Catholicism, and has high name recognition. Jeb could raise millions of dollars over night by just saying “yes” to running. Despite all this, there are strong reasons Republicans should say no to him. 1. His last name is poison. Let’s face it, if Jeb Bush had the last name of Something Else he would have already run for president in 2008 or 2012. According to a recent Washington Post/ABC News poll registered voters were asked if they would definitely NOT vote for Jeb Bush and 50 percent said they would not.
