The sign language interpreter at Nelson Mandela´s memorial yesterday "made up his own signs," according to South Africa´s deaf federation. "He´s a complete fraud," Cara Loening, director of Sign Language Education and Development in Cape Town, said according to ITV News. "He wasn´t even doing anything, There was not one sign there. Nothing. He was literally flapping his arms around." Delphin Hlungwane, an official South African sign language interpreter at DeafSA, told Reuters:

This is interesting if you think about it.

The deaf rely on these folks to shoot them straight and inform them of what is happening.

Yet, all they were fed was nonsensical hand-babble as the worldly men spoke.

Circa 1980 an attempt was made to create an international language, which fizzled of course.

I´ve wondered since, without much fervor, if an international sign language could be constructed . . ., or IS sign language universal?

#18, the attempt to create an international language is much older than 1980. I was an exchange student in 1974 with a group that was involved with the movement. The language was called Esperanto and it was (as one would suspect) more of a marxist political movement than anything else. I was just a Kid spending some time in Salzburg I knew nothing of the more sinister aspirations of this crowd.

I still see references to Esperanto every once in a while.

But when authorities raided the south Harris County home which they believed held the woman and children Wednesday, they found 110 people imprisoned in a packed, rancid "stash house" where smugglers had locked them away pending payment for their freedom. On December 18, 2012, the set of Fox & Friends was both festive and somber. Festive because it was the Christmas season. The three hosts, two men in dark suits flanking a woman in a blue dress, sat on a mustard-colored couch in front of a cheery seasonal backdrop: a lit-up tree, silver-painted twigs, mounds of tinsel, blue and red swatches of fabric, and, here and there, multicolored towers of blown glass with tapering points that made them look surprisingly like minarets. Somber because a terrible thing had happened just four days earlier, in an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut.

In a paper in the journal Nature, scientists reported Wednesday that they had retrieved ancient human DNA from a fossil dating back about 400,000 years, shattering the previous record of 100,000 years. The fossil, a thigh bone found in Spain, had previously seemed to many experts to belong to a forerunner of Neanderthals. But its DNA tells a very different story. Although the Civil Rights Act, the landmark legislation which just reached its 50th anniversary, made great strides in desegregating the economy, economic discrimination is still widespread, and anti-discrimination legislation alone can never rectify the economic damage inflicted upon blacks by slavery and our Jim Crow apartheid regime. The Civil Rights Act was a mild reform, all things considered, but one conservatives fought with vigor and one many conservatives are still bitter about to this day. When the Civil Rights Act passed in 1964, the primary purpose was to root out discrimination in public accommodations (like hotels and movie theaters)

Some time back, whenever a big racial controversy erupted, I trained myself into the habit of reading about it at FoxNews.com, just for the unbelievable comment threads. Let’s put it this way: If my friends and I went out to a bar and started playing a “let’s write the racist FoxNews.com comment thread” drinking game, our efforts couldn’t begin to approach what I read there.I wasn’t alone. Liberal websites started feasting on these threads. And so, a couple of years ago, Ailes & Co. got wise. Stories about race were, at least in my disheartened experience, closed to comments.
