Protesters block Google bus in S.F. Mission
San Francisco Chronicle, by Ellen Huet

Original Article

A group of protesters surrounded and blocked a Google employee commuter bus for more than a half hour Monday morning at a Muni bus stop at 24th and Valencia streets in San Francisco’s Mission District. The buses have, for some, become a symbol of tech-fueled gentrification, economic inequality and soaring housing prices in the city. The bus, which was headed to Google’s Mountain View campus, had riders on board. A dozen protesters stood around the bus with signs saying “Public $$$$, Private Gains,” “Stop Displacement Now,” “Fine $271, Total Fine $1 Billion,” and “Warning: Two-Tier System.”

For most "gentrification" is just a code word for whites moving back into a neighborhood and improving it. As for economic inequality, if the usual suspects would try educating themselves they´d have a chance to work for Google too.

When a fire alarm went off Saturday at Westchase Marriott, disrupting a "master class" being held by Houston WorldFest, the organization´s founder and chief executive officer, Hunter Todd, decided to do some police work of his own. After the 200 or so attendees filed back into the meeting room when the hotel gave an all clear, Todd approached a woman sitting in the front of the room who was wearing a full burqa and asked to search her backpack. The event was part of WorldFest Houston´s 46th Annual International Film Festival.

If you´re looking to get a "bang" out of your Facebook friends on Valentine´s Day, there is an app for that. Bang With Friends is a controversial app that, as the name implies, is supposed to be no-nonsense way to learn which of your friends is interested in having sex. The app´s logo and introductory screen shot leave no doubt about its intent. Since launching on Jan. 23, the app has "already hooked up over 100,000 couples," according to an e-mail from the three California college students who created the app.

The violent robbery of a television news crew outside an Oakland school last week was the latest in a series of similar incidents in a city where the rate of strong-arm robberies and holdups is surging. But the brazenness of the attack - which occurred during a live broadcast in the middle of the day - has brought fresh urgency to the problem. Union officials who represent reporters at most of the Bay Area´s major television and radio stations said Tuesday they had asked the broadcasters to immediately hire security guards to accompany news crews when they are in Oakland.

Sixteen Fisker Karma electric vehicles caught fire and burned to the ground after being submerged by saltwater from Hurricane Sandy's storm surge. The $100,000 cars were parked in Port Newark, N.J., prior to the storm's arrival, according to Jalopnik. The vehicles were submerged when Hurricane Sandy's storm surge beached the port, flooding the luxury electric vehicles and other cars parked in the port. Jalopnik reported the cars "then caught fire, exploded." The website showed several photos of what remains of the vehicles.

Washington - Americans overwhelmingly favor a bill that would give most undocumented immigrants a pathway towards citizenship, according to a new national poll. And a CNN/ORC International survey also indicates that a majority of the public says that the government´s main focus should be legalizing the status of the undocumented rather than border security. The poll was released Thursday, the same day that House Speaker John Boehner signaled any action on immigration is unlikely this year because House Republicans don't trust President Barack Obama on the issue. According to the poll, 54% say the top priority for the

The image below was sent to me by a reader who went for a visit to a physician, and was told that she could not be seen unless she filled out this race and ethnicity questionnaire, and put her name on the form. She initially refused, but they insisted that it was required or she could not see the doctor. The form does indicate that it is mandatory under Section 4302 of Obamacare. Section 4302 is explained by HHS as follows: Overview of Section 4302 of the Affordable Care Act The Affordable Care Act (ACA) includes several provisions aimed at eliminating health disparities in

AUSTIN, Texas — The Wild West tradition of openly carrying your six-shooter on the street has long been banned in Texas under state law. But the next governor could change that. Rising Democratic star and gubernatorial candidate Wendy Davis has joined her top Republican rival in supporting a proposed "open carry" law. It would allow people with concealed handgun licenses to wear a pistol on their hip, in full view, while in public. Davis has said she supports expanding gun rights in Texas. In a statement to The Associated Press, she said that includes open-carry — a position that puts her at

A private girls´ school in Northern California wanted to incorporate Black History Month into lunch time, so it decided to serve fried chicken, watermelon, and cornbread. As the Associated Press reports, school officials are apologizing because that was a really, really horrible idea. The school´s principal wrote a letter to parents, who were offended, and said the school doesn´t "perpetrate racial stereotypes." Unfortunately, that´s exactly what they did. In honor of Black History Month, we´d like to explain exactly why your fried chicken and watermelon lunch is ill-advised, with the hope that people will find better ways to honor this

The White House and congressional Democrats tried to limit the fallout Wednesday from the politically damaging conclusion in a Congressional Budget Office report that the Obamacare entitlement creates a major incentive for some people not to work. While some critics focused on a finding by the CBO that Obamacare will result in 2.5 million fewer workers over a decade, conservatives said the bigger fundamental issue highlighted in the report is one familiar to the welfare state — that taxpayer-funded government subsidies provide disincentives for full-time work. “People used to be stuck in jobs because they needed the health insurance,” said

There´s been a lot of blathering about who the front-runner for the 2016 Republican presidential nomination is, and so far I´ve resisted taking part. But I guess I´m kind of curious: Is there much of a case to be made for anyone other than Paul Ryan? On the substantive side, Ryan sure seems like he´s setting himself up for a run. There´s his steady series of "unheralded" anti-poverty outreach trips that always manage to be just heralded enough to get sympathetic press coverage. He brokered a budget deal with Patty Murray that was businesslike and low-drama but didn´t alienate the tea

Appearing on MSNBC, former Secretary of State Colin Powell savaged the Republican Party of which he says he is still a member for catering to “elements” that are overtly hostile to people of other races or nationalities. Powell told MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell that there are groups within the GOP who “demonize people who don’t look like the way they’d like them to look.” He added that, for this reason, he believes the GOP needs him more than the Democratic Party needs him. Speaking with Mitchell about the need for immigration reform, Powell said that reforming the system was critical. “We are

Allman, son of Cher and her second husband rock musician Greg Allman, spoke to Entertainment Tonight Tuesday about his former drug use, which began at a young age. "I started with drugs around the same time that we all did, around 11,” Allman said. “I mean it´s just what you did, it´s just what everybody did.” He added that he started off using marijuana and ecstasy, then later began abusing harder drugs like heroin.

This is either a glaring admission of defeat from the White House or… no, that’s really all it could be. After weeks of defending the cancellation of health plans insurers discontinued in 2013 in order to comply with the Affordable Care Act’s coverage mandates, the White House announced in November of last year that it was urging insurers to reinstate those plans. The catch was, of course, that most insurers would be unable to turn on a dime and reinstate those plans. Furthermore, the administration allowed individual states leeway to determine whether or not they would even allow insurers to reinstate
