The tide begins to turn on
the EU´s military ambitions

Telegraph [UK], by Geoffrey Van Orden, MEP*

There is no more potent symbol of statehood than military power. It is not surprising therefore that Eurocrats regard defence policy as a key element in their drive for a state called Europe, playing a role on the global stage. The forthcoming European Council (19/20 December), when heads of government meet, has long been trailered in Brussels as a "Defence Council" to take a great leap forward in the EU´s Common Security & Defence Policy (CSDP). Actually, the modest defence-related decisions have largely been taken by Ministers in recent weeks and Prime Ministers will spend most of their time on

I get the impression that this should all be discussed at the Department of Silly Ministries. Or something. The whole idea came from Monty Python, right?

The dream was for a force consisting of German Generals, French lieutenants, and of course British infantry who would have to perform the real combat operations where the rubber meets the road.

New Orleans braces for
worst winter storm in years
Times-Picayune [New Orleans, LA], by Richard Rainey    Original Article

New Orleans remains under a state of emergency this morning as temperatures begin to drop and the city braces for what Mayor Mitch Landrieu described as potentially the worst winter weather to hit southeast Louisiana in 25 years. "These winter storms can be unpredictable with unfamiliar conditions to our area," he said Monday. Tuesday´s precautions were predicated by dozens of motor vehicle crashes that occurred Friday evening when ice formed on roadways and bridges. Landrieu said emergency responders were anticipating as much as a quarter-inch of ice to form Tuesday that could cause widespread power outages and create dangerous driving

From Chicago and Minneapolis in the north to the Gulf Coast, Texas and Georgia in the south, 20 states are battening down the hatches as a once-in-a-generation winters storm brings record lows which forecasters are calling ´potentially paralyzing´ and ´crippling´. The second polar vortex in the space of one month--a mass of Arctic air shooting southward--is forecast to move through the U.S. South on Tuesday, bringing snow, freezing rain and high winds as bitter cold temperatures continue in the Midwest, according to the National Weather Service. Over the next two days temperatures will range from the teens to below zero,

Obama to deliver hour-long State of the

President Barack Obama will deliver his sixth State of the Union address Tuesday night, threatening to ignore Congress through a series of executive actions designed to do an end-run around the legislative branch of government. When he uncorks the evening´s carefully manicured rhetoric, it will be a history-dripping stemwinder delivered in a setting that boasts all the pageantry of a royal funeral. But in the age of tweets and 90-second cable news interviews, fewer and fewer Americans pay attention to lengthy policy speeches. State of the Union: time for Republicans

Telegraph [UK], by Peter Foster    Original Article

The State of the Union is one of the great fixtures in the US political calendar, when all eyes focus on the President--and his special guests in the First Lady´s box above. However, with Mr Obama largely neutered by Obamcare woes, implacable Republican opposition in Congress and sinking approval ratings, arguably of much greater interest will be the Republican response, which is delivered in a televised address just a few minutes after the President stops speaking. This year the honour has gone to a Congresswoman, Cathy McMorris Rodgers, who is the highest-rank Republican woman in the House of Representatives, but

Freezing rain and then snow is expected to fall Tuesday. Roads will ice over. Some power lines will drop. Arctic cold will overtake rain on Tuesday morning, turn it to freezing rain in the early afternoon and snow at night. Summerville and other inland areas might see the change in the late morning, said Jonathan Lamb, National Weather Service, Charleston. As much as three-quarters of an inch of ice could drop. Inland could see maybe an inch of snow Tuesday night. "It´s pretty much going to be an all-day thing," said meteorologist Brett Cimbora with the Charleston office.

The Republican Party has a great opportunity to re-gain control of the country, but it must seize the day, U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina said Saturday night. The GOP is poised to win back a majority in the Senate and keep its advantage in the House in Congressional elections this fall, Graham said. It was the most unlikely crack military unit ever put together, with an equally improbable mission. The number of people enrolled in private health insurance under Obamacare has soared by more than one-third in recent weeks to around 3 million, according to government data released on Friday. Marilyn Tavenner, administrator of the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), announced the preliminary tally in a blog posting. She forecast that enrollment through new federal and state health insurance marketplaces would continue to grow in coming weeks as a public outreach campaign accelerates. The new data adds to evidence that President Barack Obama´s administration has turned the corner on enrollment after a botched October 1 launch.

A massive pile up during a whiteout storm in Indiana on Thursday afternoon killed three people and injured more than 20 others. Chaotic scenes of jackknifed trailers and the mangled wreckage of cars packed across three lanes of the highway could be seen after visibility dropped to nearly zero at about 3.30pm. More than 40 vehicles, including semitrailers and cars, were involved in the deadly crash near Michigan City, but wintry conditions and the scale of the crash site slowed rescue efforts. One driver was still trapped in their car at 6.30pm, three hours after the crash happened, as rescue crews worked

President Obama has been losing his TV audience — literally. With the State of the Union proving ever less entrancing for viewers, the White House is desperate to turn the speech into a multiday event in an effort to bolster interest in Mr. Obama’s policies, even if people don’t tune in to hear his words. WASHINGTON — President Obama plans to sign an executive order requiring that janitors, construction workers and others working for federal contractors be paid at least $10.10 an hour, using his own power to enact a more limited version of a policy that he has yet to push through Congress. The order, which Mr. Obama will highlight in his annual State of the Union address on Tuesday night, is meant to underscore an increasing willingness by the president to bypass Congress if lawmakers continue to resist his agenda, aides said. After a year in which most of his legislative priorities went nowhere,

In the column Hicks offers his eyewitness testimony to the security issues that Stevens dealt with at our Libyan facilities before his death. Former Vice President Al Gore raised eyebrows last week when he suggested that “fertility management” was the key to fighting global warming and promoting economic development in poor countries. Gore’s comments drew criticism from free-marketeers who said his remarks amount to “eco-imperialism.” “Gore’s agenda for saving the world from global warming has always included population control,” Myron Ebell, director of global warming and international environmental policy at the free-market Competitive Enterprise Institute, told The Daily Caller News Foundation. “Advocating population control specifically for Africa is just another form of imperialism. Deep within the Earth, a fierce molten core is generating a magnetic field capable of defending our planet against devastating solar winds. The protective field extends thousands of miles into space and its magnetism affects everything from global communication to animal migration and weather patterns. But this magnetic field, so important to life on Earth, has weakened by 15 per cent over the last 200 years. And this, scientists claim, could be a sign that the Earth’s poles are about to flip.
