Japan’s Abe Secures Passage of
Secrecy Law as Opposition Revolts

Bloomberg, by Isabel Reynolds & Takashi Hirokawa

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe secured final passage of a bill granting Japan’s government sweeping powers to declare state secrets, a measure aimed at shoring up defense ties with the U.S. that prompted a public backlash and revolt by the opposition. The upper house of the Diet gave final approval of the measures in Tokyo late yesterday after opposition parties first forced a no-confidence vote in Abe’s government in the lower house. The wrangling over the bill forced the government to extend the parliamentary session, due to end yesterday, for two more days. The bill, which forms part of Abe’s broader push to

Washington - In 2008 just before his 90th birthday, the United States gave Nelson Mandela a special present, striking him from a decades-old terror watch list and ending what US officials called "a rather embarrassing matter." By then the anti-apartheid icon had long left behind the jail cells where he was incarcerated for 27 years, and was already enjoying retirement and his status as one of the most revered statesmen of the 20th century after becoming South Africa´s first black president. In past years, US officials have beaten a path to his door in his family village hoping some of his almost

I could only stand watching a couple of minutes of the Chris Matthews interview of the president before flipping back to the dog channel. Biased TV is boring TV and Matthews didn´t disappoint. "He came to us. He came amongst us." said Mr. Tingles. Mary Katherine Ham: And, lo, the president came upon them, and the glory of the president shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. As for the interview itself, it was "extraordinary," according to other MSNBC contributors. It includes such insights as Joe Biden will go down in history as one of the greatest veeps of all time. The hippy-fueled magazine Mother Jones that helped torpedo Mitt Romney´s campaign wants your tax dollars to fund its crusade for the radical transformation of American society. Specifically, the extremist, George Soros-funded rag that published the story of Romney´s ill-received "47 percent" comments is counseling its interns to apply for taxpayer-funded food stamps so they can survive their voluntary servitude in ultra-expensive San Francisco. The locus of latte liberalism where the muckraking publication is headquartered has the highest rents in the nation. In a feature story about how rotten left-of-center magazines are to their interns, left-winger Charles Davis reports at Vice: One former MJ

Yet another phenomenon with a long paper trail in Islamic history has just taken place, even as the Western "mainstream" -- little acquainted with true history or reality -- dismisses it as an aberration. Asia News has the details: Islamist rebels have kidnapped a group of nuns from the Greek Orthodox monastery of St Thecla (Mar Taqla) in Maaloula [an ancient Christian community where Christians were earlier forced to convert to Islam or die]... "Armed men burst in the monastery of St Thecla in Maaloula this afternoon [Dec. 2]. From there, they forcibly took 12 women religious," Mgr Zenari said ....

Landmark Legal Foundation (LLF) president and radio talk show host Mark Levin says he welcomes George Washington University Law Professor Jonathan Turley’s recent acknowledgement that the concentration of presidential power under President Obama poses a “severe” danger to the nation. “I thought I was hearing an echo. I’ve been complaining about the Obama imperial presidency for several years now,” Levin told CNSNews.com. “It’s nice to have a liberal law professor testify before Congress that we have a president who is out of control. "In fact, I’ve gone further and said that we have entered a post-constitutional period…A lot of professors

Rep. Earl Blumenauer (D-Ore.) says his plan to nearly double the federal gas tax is needed because the tax hasn’t been raised in years and a decrease in fuel tax revenues has occurred due to the improved fuel efficiency of vehicles. When discussing his proposal on Fox News Dec. 3, Blumenauer said, “First of all, we haven’t raised the gas tax in 20 years. “During that time, the amount that the average motorist pays per mile that they drive because of increased fuel efficiency and inflation has been cut in half,” he continued. South Africans had been preparing themselves for many months, but when the news broke late on Thursday night local time it still came as a shock: Nelson Mandela, one of the most widely-admired and recognizable figures of the 20th century and beyond, had died, aged 95. “Our nation has lost its greatest son,” South African President Jacob Zuma said in televised statement. “Our people have lost a father. Although we knew that this day would come, nothing can diminish our sense of a profound and enduring loss.” Tributes flooded in from across the world; news organizations set aside schedules to

Albany, N.Y. — Snow-white owls with luminous yellow eyes are thrilling bird-watchers as the magnificent birds set up winter residence at airports, fields and beaches far south of their normal Arctic range. Snowy owls, familiar to children as Harry Potter´s pet, made a noticeable appearance in the northern half of the U.S. in 2011. Bird-watchers recently report on eBird.org snowy owl sightings in dozens of locations across the Midwest, Northeast and Mid-Atlantic states as far south as Cape Hatteras, N.C. The owls live in the Arctic, but when their population spikes or lemmings are scarce, young ones fly south. "Snowy owl populations are

While we have been totally focused, for the past two months, on the amount of time it takes a webpage to load on healthcare.gov, the rest of the globe appears to be continuing to spin. And it appears to be spinning away from us. After more than a decade of what is known as kinetic action in the Middle East and Southwest Asia, Americans are tired of being the alpha dog in the global pack. According to a poll released by the Pew organization, The public thinks that the nation does too much to solve world problems, and increasing percentages want the U.S.

"Uh-oh." That´s the sound being uttered in doctors´ offices and hospitals across the country as medical providers realize they´re getting stuck with another bottomless Obamacare bill. While the White House desperately tries to pivot from the havoc wrought by the "Affordable Care Act," its hidden regulatory bombs keep exploding. I heard about the latest problem this week from an eye doctor friend who received a letter from a Colorado-based insurer informing her that she´s essentially on the hook for Obamacare´s payment grace period for debtors. The optometrist is bracing for a flood of similar letters from other insurers. Like countless other

Last summer on his $100 million family tour of Africa, Barack Obama hoped for a priceless photo op with Nelson Mandela, the ailing freedom pioneer who went from prison cell to the presidency of South Africa. Mandela´s family suggested that wouldn’t happen. So, the Obamas did a photo op in Mandela´s former prison cell. Which Obama’s White House quickly tweeted upon word of the icon´s passing at 95. [Skip] But Obama was also caught staring at television coverage of Mandela’s passing, which became Obama’s Photo of the Day.

Denver - A baker who refused to make a wedding cake for a same-sex ceremony must serve gay couples despite his religious beliefs or face fines, a judge said Friday. The order from administrative law judge Robert N. Spencer said Masterpiece Cakeshop in suburban Denver discriminated against a couple "because of their sexual orientation by refusing to sell them a wedding cake for their same-sex marriage." The order says the cake-maker must "cease and desist from discriminating" against gay couples. Although the judge did not impose fines in this case, the business will face penalties if it continues to turn away gay

The most curious thing of all about the November jobs report released on Friday was the huge drop in the unemployment rate — and the fact that the Labor Department chose not to disclose that the data going into that figure are under investigation for falsification. On Nov. 19, I broke the news in my column that the Census Bureau, which collects data that goes into the jobless rate on behalf of Labor, had caught one of its enumerators fabricating interviews in 2010. The culprit said back then (and to me during an interview) that he was told to do so by

More young men in California rise in pitch at the end of their sentences when talking, new research shows. This process is known as "uptalk" or "valleygirl speak" and has in the past been associated with young females, typically from California or Australia. But now a team says that this way of speaking is becoming more frequent among men.The findings were presented at the Meeting of the Acoustical Society of America in California. The hacker has reportedly uncovered doodles of Clinton drawing on what were, at the time, classified documents. Among the doodles is apparently a picture of a penis. The document uncovered is a briefing of the strategic measures the United States could take prior Clinton’s decision to intervene in

The former president granted the meeting out of lessons of humility and forgiveness he learned from Mandela, he said: BILL CLINTON: I remember one day, oh, about a month after the whole impeachment business was over, Henry Hyde, who had run the whole show, unbelievably enough, maybe a few months after, it was

One definition of a pathological liar is someone who lies where the truth would serve just as well. When President Obama’s uncle, Onyango Obama, was arrested in 2011 for drunk driving, the truth — that Obama had stayed with his uncle years earlier for several weeks as a Harvard law student — would have served the president just fine. No potential Obama voter would have held it against him that an uncle he had stayed with two decades earlier was picked up for DUI. Yet the White House went with a lie, claiming that Obama had never met his uncle. Now that

On Tuesday, The Boston Globe reported that Onyango “Omar” Obama, uncle to President Obama, says that his famous nephew stayed with him while a student at Harvard Law School in the 80s, in contradiction to The White House’s contention that the two had never met. At Thursday’s White House daily briefing, Press Secretary Jay Carney confirmed that the President had, in fact, briefly stayed with “his father’s half-brother,” as Carney described Omar Obama, and that no one had actually asked the President about it when the White House initially commented. The 69 year-old Omar Obama has been facing deportation back
